University Challenge - relevance in 2022?

Does university challenge retain relevance in 2022 or is this something of the 60s.
It's nice to know graduates have a wide range of general knowledge but didn't we already know this?

Do universities enter as a PR exercise and does it work? For the average TV viewer is this still a draw or are its days over?

I just enjoy playing along and if I get my number of correct answers into double figures I'm thrilled! It's good to be exposed to areas of learning I'd never seek out normally as well. I hope the BBC hold on to it.

mids2019 · 30/08/2022 13:45

I never do that well!

I suppose it is a good bit of fun but who do viewers support? Why does Oxbridge seem to allow individual colleges? Is this to ensure fairness as it means in reality those two unis enter a lot of teams?

It's entertainment; what does it need to be relevant to or for? Competitors enjoy it and viewers enjoy it, that is its purpose.

BogOffTraceyBeaker · 30/08/2022 13:46

I like to see if I can better my correct answers total which is ONE not per show just ONE question right ever, so proud!! TBH I don’t understand the majority of questions. Like the theme tune to

undermilkjug · 30/08/2022 13:49

Its not a central University thing (or at least it wasn't when i was on the team). The student union ran some general knowledge quizzes in the bar, asked if anyone was up for it and wanted to give it a go, and then narrowed down the numbers.

It was a bit of a chance to show off basically (unless it went horribly horribly wrong).

Viewers support whichever team they like, surely? Maybe they're swayed by the quality of particular mascots.

I do quite well on classical music by saying "Mozart" every time.

HMReturnsBag · 30/08/2022 13:51

It's just a quiz show.

mids2019 · 30/08/2022 14:01

Is it a big draw though? I like the mascots and theme tune but then maybe that is just nostalgia?

I only watch it for Jeremy Paxman.

We have similar success with complicated maths questions by always giving the answer "One"

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 30/08/2022 14:22

Surely you could argue the same about any quiz show. Personally I don't watch them but many people do.

BasiliskStare · 30/08/2022 15:05

We love University challenge here & I do think quiz programmes are a big draw . We watch only connect as well , and Richard Osman & Who wants to be a millionaire. All quizzes but just a bit different.

It's just an entertainment programme in my view . Be interesting to see how new presenter gets on because I thought Jeremy Paxman did a fine job of it.

Chemenger · 30/08/2022 15:07

It seems 90% of maths questions are either 1, 0 or -1.

brookstar · 30/08/2022 15:08

It's just a quiz but the teams happen to study at the same university. 🤷🏼‍♀️

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 30/08/2022 18:49

I'm not sure anything can ever be "relevant" to more than a particular group of people. I enjoy general knowledge quizzes. My reaction time is a bit slow nowadays for University Challenge, and I sometimes cheat by pausing during the picture rounds because I know I'll be able to think of the answer but I won't be able to do it before the teams.

ImPickleRickSpartacus · 30/08/2022 18:52

What a weird post. What programmes are "relevant" other than the news, op?

OiFrogg · 30/08/2022 18:58

I know loads of people who watch it. I don't watch any other quizzes because most are about knowledge that I don't think is particularly useful, whereas UC tests on knowledge I think is good to know. A lot of it is A-Level level not undergrad and there have been grammar questions from the current Y3 curriculum 😯 although not something I'd imagine most adults would know.

I love University Challenge and so does dc1 who is 11 who is happy as they got a question right last night. It’s a fun quiz show.

Saucery · 30/08/2022 19:02

It’s cosy tv. We support the university we went to (never get very far), then the university DS goes to (gets a bit further but never wins), then whichever team has members we take a liking to based on Cleverness, Quirkiness, Interesting Jumpers etc.

OurspoonscamefromWoolworths · 30/08/2022 19:05

It is the only reason DD wants to go to university and she wants to go to whichever one has won the most. She is gutted that Jeremy will be gone by the time she goes to University.

Definitelyrandom · 31/08/2022 12:16

As PPs have said, it's only a quiz. It's the only one we watch and support the team which is less annoying. It's always surprising how many questions are answered on random parts of the world (gap year travels?) but the contestants very rarely get any British geography type questions correct. We generally get a fair few answers right - but the celeb editions at Christmas are a lot easier a.k.a. not loaded with science and maths.......

Talipesmum · 31/08/2022 12:21

It’s a bit different to other quiz shows in that the questions are specifically quite academic and much less “general knowledge” though the best teams will have plenty of both. You’d be pretty unlikely to get questions like “look at these formulae - which chemical process is this” unless it’s something very well known like photosynthesis etc. in normal quiz shows. But because the questions are across a wide range of disciplines, you’ve got a chance of knowing the answers if your specialist area comes up, and you can feel all pleased if you get one outside your specialist area.

So yes, of course it still has a place, as it’s different to other quizzes and is very popular.

Honeyroar · 07/09/2022 14:22

It’s just a game show. It had no more relevance in the 69s either. Student unions organise allsorts of clubs that have inter university tournaments. This is just one of them. We all enjoy watching it.
