Unis knowing the grades makes the wait harder

Less than a week till A level results day. DD is calm and happy with both firm and insurance but as a mum I want all her hard work and effort to be reflected in the results. Like most parents I have seen behind the scenes so think she deserves the grades.

Knowing that UCAS and the universities know the grades and decisions made makes waiting even harder. I understand why, imagine the chaos if they only found out the results on the same day, but I just want to know now.

Thank you for understanding and for your restraint, OP. Most people share it but once in a great while someone makes an awkward request of an admissions tutor. I’ve never known anyone to breach confidentiality but beyond that everyone should know that admissions tutors and unit admin staff can only access results for those who have applied to their unit. Even then, to ask for info is to ask a friend to put their job on the line.

It’s only a few more days now. Hang in there!

SkygardenTower · 12/08/2022 21:38

It must be tough on the admissions side. I couldn't image asking them.

It makes the results feel very real now the uni knows them!

My dad was an admissions tutor. I sat and watched him review his incoming students, whilst hoping someone else was doing that for me!

doubleshotcappuccino · 13/08/2022 12:46

These last few days of the wait seem to be taking longer ! Good luck all ..xx

SkygardenTower · 13/08/2022 18:25

It feels so weird that someone somewhere has (or is making) a decision on my daughter’s future, but we can’t know it until Thursday. Such a long wait, but wait we must.

Eh? The system is totally logical. Papers are marked, then unis get them, then on Thursday or dc get their results. Seems fair and common sense to me.

OrangeBlossom28 · 13/08/2022 18:41

DD2 is waiting for results on Thurs too and is equally happy with her firm and insurance choices. The waiting until Thurs am is going to be tricky. As with everyone else, we'd like to know now!

hoglethotel · 13/08/2022 18:44

No is saying it's not logical @Oblomov22. However, @SkygardenTower I totally get it too. I'm an A level examiner, so spent the first half of my summer marking other people's exam papers. I've been fine about the wait for my DC all summer, but knowing that everything now has been decided - the grade she's got, the uni she's going to and we're just having to wait is making this last week drag by.

And next week, I've got to do it all over again, waiting for my other child's GCSE result.

OrangeBlossom28 · 13/08/2022 19:16

@hoglethotel That's it isn't it, knowing that the unis know and have decided and we don't know is the hard but. The surmising about whether an ABB offer will be ok with AAC for example. DD2 has Reading and Swansea as her firm and insurance. We reckon she should get into Swansea if she misses the grades for Reading.

SkygardenTower · 13/08/2022 19:58

@hoglethotel exactly. Been happy waiting all summer but this week is hard. I'm the same with gcse results the week later, though that is less stressful as A level plans won't change.

🤞🏻for everyone.

Actually the Unis don't know who they are taking just yet. Everyone who has made the grades will be an easy yes. But for those who have missed a bit the admissions teams will meet next week to decide their fate. That's why it takes a while. Hang in there. And find something rubbish to watch on tv Weds night in case can't sleep.

NotSorry · 14/08/2022 11:52

I've been through this 3 times now @SkygardenTower my last dc went to uni in September last year - it seems us parents are anxious while our offspring are mooching around not worrying at all!

If it helps, one of my DC had to go through clearing as they hadn't achieved their grades. The process was fine and he's just graduated with a first - I think not reaching his grades gave him a shock and he worked extremely hard (all through the covid period too) and reaped the reward

Good luck and I hope all goes well for your DC on Thursday 🤞

londonmummy1966 · 14/08/2022 13:11

DD is finding it quite hard but I think what is exacerbating the position for her is that some unis seem to have started confirming places where offers have been met - she is seeing social media posts about this. Is anyone else seeing this?

OrangeBlossom28 · 14/08/2022 14:29

Where has she seen confirmation on SM?

tryingmybest13 · 14/08/2022 14:30

@londonmummy1966 the UCAS embargo for unis was from 2 pm on the 12th until 8 am on the 18th. Any offers confirmed before then will relate to other qualifications. Good luck!

Scottish and overseas qualifications come out earlier than rUK ones.

ChateauMargaux · 14/08/2022 14:39

IB results have been out for a while.. maybe that's where the confirmations have come from.

pinklavenders · 14/08/2022 14:40

English results come out later than most other countries' exam results.

This is especially difficult for those students with their insurance choice abroad! It means booking a flight for the following day if the firm's grades are missed..!

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2022 15:52

Ignore the papers !!! It's just click bait as they have no more idea than any of us of the actual results. And they published scare stories every year pre covid.
Stay off social media if get worried. There's nothing you can do for your child until Thursday, and you need to be in the right head space to help them if needed.
4 more sleeps - make them good ones 😊

doubleshotcappuccino · 14/08/2022 15:53

@mumsneedwine good advice that I will heed ! Got DD off it then started looking myself .. but won't anymore ! Thank you 😊

EmpressoftheMundane · 14/08/2022 16:02

Thousands of pupils could miss their expected grades with disadvantaged students, whose learning was disproportionately damaged by the pandemic, most likely to be ‘elbowed out’

Describing disadvantaged students as being “elbowed out” is really twisting things. It’s not the fault of students who did well. It’s the fault of the government who did not manage education well during the lockdowns.

Seeline · 14/08/2022 16:04

I was managing quite well until, with less than 3 weeks until results, my DD was told by her insurance uni that they were no longer providing her course! So now she doesn't have her (achievable) insurance place....

Gherkingreen · 14/08/2022 16:10

We've just said to DS that if he gets the grades he needs for his first choice, fantastic.
He's now not sure about his insurance choice 🙄 so next step would be clearing to find another course.
If he doesn't find another course that fits his requirements, he can apply again for next year and get a FT job to fill the gap. No stress, all options are on the table and he has a plan B and C in place just in case.
Article in Telegraph today saying most students will receive their first choice uni place, complete opposite of the Guardian piece so...who knows? They can't both be right.

doubleshotcappuccino · 14/08/2022 16:12

@EmpressoftheMundane very true hadn't really thought of that ..@Seeline that's truly awful.. sorry it's got even more stressful ..
