Unis knowing the grades makes the wait harder

Less than a week till A level results day. DD is calm and happy with both firm and insurance but as a mum I want all her hard work and effort to be reflected in the results. Like most parents I have seen behind the scenes so think she deserves the grades.

Knowing that UCAS and the universities know the grades and decisions made makes waiting even harder. I understand why, imagine the chaos if they only found out the results on the same day, but I just want to know now.

The CIE / CAIE results came out a day or two ago and students are reporting their grades were lower than expected. No idea if it is just the vocal minority or if it is a wider trend. Also no idea if they got TAGs which may have led them to have inflated grades and therefore the exams are more reflective of ability, or if there is an actual marking issue with the CIE grades. Or if as said, if it’s just the ones who missed the mark that are raising it on SM.

@Gherkingreen another good point and hadn't seen telegraph . Glad to find like minded mums in the same boat. DD had a good look at clearing today .. I think a lot of it's problem is it's branding ! It's actually got lots of brilliant options with very good unis .. so adjustment is alive and kicking although there wasn't going to be adjustment this year . They should rename it something a bit more optimistic !

doubleshotcappuccino · 14/08/2022 16:17

..so in theory you could pick up a Uni that had rejected you..

lot123 · 14/08/2022 16:26

My son keeps saying the same thing. Although I try to tell him that his fate was sealed when he handed in his exam paper, not when the unis get his grades.

But I know what you mean, it's your child's name and their results being seen by others before they know. Makes logical sense obviously but it's a strange feeling. We were all relaxed and put it to one side for most of the summer but starting to feel nervous on his behalf now.

GU24Mum · 14/08/2022 17:05

@Gherkingreen - we've got a similar thing with the insurance one. I'm looking at clearing too so at least I feel I know what the options could be!

@Seeline - that's awful : are they really allowed to do that?

londonmummy1966 · 14/08/2022 17:21

@mumsneedwine - exactly - I have told her that there is nothing to stress about. I hadn't realised that the international exams were out (other than IB). She has quite a few friends in the international system so probably where it is coming from.

My DD is starting at the university I work at this September. Her results are in our system and I have the access but obviously I can’t look at them. That would be gross misconduct and jeopardise her place and my job so I would never dream of trying. But imagine how I feel logging in every day knowing this!!!!

Does a computer decide who automatically gets in on their grades, then a real person/team discuss those who didn't meet their offer?

Yes of course! If your offer is 3 x B and your result is 3 x B why would that need a human to say ok? It's an automated process.

Not at the university I work at! We have to trawl through every result - spent most of today doing so.

That's mad - why? We automate ours. I mean it's not like you can change your mind if someone has met their offer - you have to honour it, you can't change your mind.

No particular reason other than being behind the times, as far as I'm aware. I would love for it to be automated as it's such a pointless exercise when applicants have met the conditions of their offer.

titchy · 14/08/2022 22:52

If you use one of the more common student record systems and do your UCAS import on ODBC there is no reason it can't be automated. Just needs someone to set up some scripting.

At the university where DD has just graduated from everyone who meets their grades for her course gets in, and the admission staff then read the personal statements of borderline applicants. They don't look at personal statements until then.

Pretty much. Though there is a threshold below which we wouldn’t accept dropped grades, so those with results below that will all be rejected.
