Strathclyde, Glasgow is also a great place to study

CraftyGin · 25/06/2022 13:52

My DD put down:

Edinburgh (firm)
Southampton (insurance)
Sussex
Newcastle
Sheffield

She hate Bristol when she went to visit so it did not make it to her UCAS form.

Other DD did Economics at Royal Holloway.

Ebonyhorse · 25/06/2022 13:54

Southampton

@Kittycooo - did you see the Bristol standard offer is A star A A. Contextual is AAB though.

Yeah I did - he did literally no work for mocks and got 3 As so he can get a t least a stat (if he pulls his finger out !)

does single parent receiving tax credits count towards contextual offer or is it just free school dinners ? Am just above that level !

You'll need to check the Bristol website I think.

Bristol will look at his predicted grades and offer on that basis. I think he is going to need at least an A star predicted to receive an offer.

How about adding LSE as a “stretch” option; the opportunities there are incredible?

bare · 25/06/2022 18:07

Bristol have a massive list of schools that they offer contextual offers too. Here's the link

mathanxiety · 25/06/2022 18:20

YY to LSE.

libbytrois · 25/06/2022 18:29

Manchester, Cardiff

Piggywaspushed · 25/06/2022 18:38

Confused! You know Bath is campus, right??

Some campus unis are in 'fun cities' . I give you Birmingham , Nottingham....

The Uni - "up themselves".

CraftyGin · 25/06/2022 20:11

Universities put a range of grades in their prospectus.

DD, who went to Edinburgh, was originally offered AAA. The dropped this to AAB for no particular reason, and then ABB once her EPQ was in. She came from a highly regarded independent school with university educated parents.

lightisnotwhite · 25/06/2022 20:14

Newcastle? Party city but good enough for minor royals. And there the Newcastle Falcons if he likes rugby. Lots of choice with combined courses but straight Economics AAB

I visited Newcastle with DD1 for Economics/Politics. I was really impressed. I loved the city (and hope she did too).

The university is on a campus next door to the city centre, although the economics department is right next to St James' Park, IIRC.

We were lucky to have our visit on a Wednesday and the campus was really vibrant.

One think that people mentioned about Newcastle is that it is "quite remote" so there is a seven day feel as students don't go home at the weekend that you might find at southern universities. This means that they can get stuck in with societies, especially those that take advantage of the outdoors.

It is one of those places where you can't go wrong.

Southampton

I agree - Southampton is a great university for many courses.

For Economics, they have every subset of courses that you can imagine. You really can build your own degree.

It was a close run thing between Edinburgh and Southampton for DD2. Both universities are very similar in their course offerings.

hellsbells99 · 25/06/2022 20:50

worth looking at Liverpool Uni for a lower offer

I disagree unless he is really into economics. London Universities, situated in the centre of a world city, offer enormous academic and career opportunities, but you need to be motivated and a self starter to make it worth the extra cost and hassle.

Acceptance rates will probably be 1:12 and you could be left hanging around waiting for a response till after Easter.

More importantly, how good is his maths. Economics courses vary a lot in terms of maths content. If he has the potential to get an A* or A in maths and enjoys the subject he will have a lot more choice. If he does not enjoy maths he should avoid courses with demanding compulsory maths modules, perhaps considering “economics and…” or “economics with…” instead.

I was going to suggest Nottingham, but looked them up and they want an A*.

Decorhate · 26/06/2022 08:14

Sheffield is ABB. It’s Ds insurance choice this year.

RampantIvy · 26/06/2022 08:22

I agree with @CraftyGin's comments about Newcastle. It is one of the cheaper cities for accommodation for both halls and private rental. The metro is a great way of getting about, and it is close to the coast.

One of DD's flatmates is just about to graduate after studying economics.

Kittycooo · 26/06/2022 08:34

Thanks for all you responses !

Sorry to drip feed but we are a long way into the SW so erring on 5 hours ish from us if possible. I know someone at Newcastle and they love it , shame it’s so far!

whats Southampton like as a city ?

he is really bright and a natural mathematician but he isn’t very studious !

@Kittycooo I don’t know Southampton that well but I really liked to uni when we visited.

Has Cardiff been suggested yet? Location might suit & fairly lively city
