Have you considered Nottingham or Nottingham Trent?

Also Accountancy apprenticeships? My son is doing a chartered accountancy with one of the Big Four.

CraftyGin · 29/06/2022 21:47

Nottingham is never going to be anyone's backup.

Piggywaspushed · 29/06/2022 21:51

If one had an offer for Economics form Bath (or Warwick ,say), Nottingham would certainly be a back up.

Is it just me or is grade inflation insane at some Universities. We are also looking at Economics and unless you qualify for free school meals or your parents didn't attend university you are looking at A's and A*s.

I would definitely recommend Southampton as a back up choice. I went there many years ago and had a fantastic time.

The halls were very dependent on where you went to school if you fitted in or not. Not sure if it is still the same?

Would love to have it as our back up choice but DS won't contemplate it as he goes to school there

Is it both patents not attending uni? Me and ds’s father are divorced - I went to uni , his dad didn’t

I’m on single patent tax credits but don’t think that counts for a contextual offer (nearly not quite !)

Thanks for all your posts !

we are way down south west so even Bristol is a 4 hour journey from us so really can’t consider Scotland as he wants to be able to come home for the odd weekend / hols / surf etc . Newcastle for example is an 8 hour drive from here and longer on the train ...

hes thinking maybe Bristol first choice Cardiff back up at the mo.

We’re in the SW, ds went to Cardiff. He was offered AAB and achieved AAA. He loved the city and graduated last year with a First in Economics. It was far enough from home but felt safe in comparison with other cities; considering we’re too rural to raise streetwise kids. He’s now living in London and future looks bright.

Awww, thanks! Sorry if it read like a stealth boast but I am a proud mum, especially as neither his dad or me went to uni.

Very useful thread. My DS just going into Y13. We're in Wales so his AS exams should give a good indication. He's looking at Bristol and Exeter for Economics. He's doing Economics A level and loves it but not so keen on his Maths so mighty need to look more at Economics/business/management rather then straight economics. He really fancies Exeter for the rugby and access to surfing but don't know if he'll get the grades.

Not RG but Swansea is a great uni and easy access to surf on your doorstep. It's our local uni but DS keen to move away.

LobeliaBaggins · 30/06/2022 11:51

I just wanted to say that Economics offers are very, very competitive and grade inflation played a part with this year's offers. DS has predicted AAAA and had offers from Warwick at AAA and UCL at AAA. LSE rejected him grrr..... Firmed UCL because he wasn't certain of making Warwick and it seems like a good choice given A level exams were really tough this year. His insurance is Notts which requires an AAA.

I should add that he goes to a high achieving indie.

LobeliaBaggins · 30/06/2022 11:53

What is it with MN interface not allowing A star symbols or allowing edits? DS has a predicted of Astar Astar Astar A. His offer from Warwick was Astar Astar A and that from UCL is Astar A A.

Sorry!

Sorry!

You just need to leave a space after the asterisk symbol, otherwise it thinks you want the text inside the asterisks to be bold

LobeliaBaggins · 30/06/2022 12:14

ah thanks @Peaseblossum22

We had an offer from Edinburgh this year for Economics - A star, A star and A with maths having to be one of the A star - originally had planned on it being back up offer.

Wow that is quite high.

SeasonFinale · 01/07/2022 09:48

Unfortunately people are misunderstanding what constitutes a contextual offer.

Parents not going to uni and FSM do not. Please check what each uni you intend to apply to does use to give their contextual offers. Many will depend on the postcode of where you live and the school you attended. Some like Bristol have a specific list of schools (approximately 40% schools) but aims to improve pathways into Higher Education for those schools which statistically show that too few from those schools are going into Higher Ed compared to their results.

CraftyGin · 01/07/2022 10:08

My DD's offer was ABB, and she went to an independent school.

CraftyGin · 01/07/2022 10:09

That was economics at Edinburgh

shank2 · 01/07/2022 10:25

Luckily for us our offers at Durham,Bath and Bristol all lower than Edinburgh

Oh that was good - was that this year @CraftyGin?

No, she graduated last year, so that would have been five years ago.

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 24/07/2022 14:37

I would just throw this in. Our DD got A*AA and applied for LSE Bristol Cardiff and UEA.
She got offers for Bristol Cardiff and UEA and on looking round all 3 cities she loved Norwich. She didn’t want to go to a campus Uni either 🤔
She’s about to go into her second year and loves it there!

NotSorry · 07/08/2022 18:11

DS2 just graduated in economics from UEA - he loved it there too - Norwich is quite a small city so easy to get around and lots going on

HewasH2O · 07/08/2022 21:20

Growing up in Cornwall I drew a line 4-5 hours away from home which determined where I should apply. I ended up in Swansea. If rugby is a decider, Exeter & Cardiff should both be on the short list. Southampton and rugby don't really go together, but it's a great student city.

mintlimerum · 08/08/2022 15:21

Hi OP. If your DS is really keen on Bath, they are one of the unis who are very keen on the EPQ and will offer a grade lower for an A star or A at EPQ. Could he do an EPQ?

Also, just wanted to mention that he could apply for Economics at Bath, but also for another course there such as "International Development with Economics" (which is a standard offer of AAB, I think, but would be ABB with an EPQ or as a contextual offer). Very relevant degree and less maths intensive? Don't worry about the PS as Bath know they have slightly different courses to other unis and will let you write a second PS for a course there if necessary.

For straight Economics at Oxbridge, LSE or UCL he would need three A stars realistically (as everyone accepted way exceeds the standard offer grades). But UCL does offer a massive amount of joint honours programmes which may be worth a look? I know he's not keen on London, but maybe good to keep an open mind at this stage, especially as UCL ranked in the top 10 unis worldwide?
