Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Offers are in for some, others on waiting lists, others doing their A levels and planning a gap year.

Best of luck everyone for great results on 18th August, we will be here to celebrate, commiserate, advise and generally support you for the last stage of the 2022 journey. 🍀

@opoponax Thank you - that’s really helpful. We’re finally here and ready for whatever tomorrow (or today as it’s now the early hours) brings.

It’s actually DH’s home town and he even qualified here eons ago. However his local ‘expert’ knowledge has been hilariously outdated so far. It is wonderful to be back here though; the DCs here are very lucky indeed.

HoneyMobster · 17/09/2022 07:18

Best of luck to everyone moving in or who have already moved in. Still another two weeks before DD starts.

We're taking a mini break up North this week to get a bit of family time together before she leaves. I'm going to drop both her and DS1 at the same time. He gets the roof box and she gets the boot/car!!

Haffdonga · 17/09/2022 08:19

Good luck everyone, students and parents alike! I know emotions will be high having gone through the fresher drop off a couple of times myself now. These young people will thrive and have an amazing time and you'll all be ok too 😉! Second time round for ds so he's driving himself down. He set off on the 4 hour drive (on an easy traffic day) to Bristol this morning. Our house is young person free again for the first time since covid and DH and I are trying to remember how we do the old people lifestyle again.
Good luck medic families!

wishiwasacollie · 17/09/2022 18:28

Good luck all. Dropped DD off at Dundee. Nice room loads of storage. Same in kitchen so that was good. Tears all round but hooe she settles. Thanks for the support you lot xxx

KingscoteStaff · 17/09/2022 22:13

All good dropping off in Newcastle. Oh my goodness Park View is nice @opoponax !

She was meeting up with some girls from the medics chat for a walk around this afternoon, then off out with her flatmates this evening.

We’ll meet her for brunch tomorrow, then head home.

opoponax · 20/09/2022 10:25

It is fab @KingscoteStaff . I hope your DD has settled in well. We were in Newcastle at the weekend and saw lots of freshers - maybe your DD was one of them. DD was pleased to have been offered a freshers wristband on campus even if she did have to fess up that it was a year too early.

Dagbonunion · 20/09/2022 11:59

@MidLifeCrisis007 Thank you for taking this up

Bimkom · 28/09/2022 10:24

HI, can somebody give any advice about stethoscopes? Apparently DS has been given a 20% off voucher as part of his BMA membership (he has now been officially unionised). We haven't bought one up until now, waiting until he got there - but he doesn't seem to have been given any sort of steer (although we are only on day 3). Apparently laser engraving is also free with the BMA voucher. Does one just put one's name?

Bimkom · 28/09/2022 10:26

Not being a medical family, we don't have any clue whatsoever what one should look for.

opoponax · 28/09/2022 11:21

Hi @Bimkom Littmann Classic III. Worth engraving with name as they all have them and unless they go for a standout colour, they all look the same. We also bought a case and some spare earpieces.

Thanks for that. Would you mind explaining what makes that one the best, or the gold standard, or whatever? It is just because it is, or are there some objective features that make it the best, or the most practical etc. DS also said he thought it shouldn't be too colourful, as maybe that looks unprofessional - would you agree?

Monkey2001 · 28/09/2022 12:08

I don't know why everyone says that is the one, but they all do! Colourful is fine, makes it more distinctive and can be a talking point with patients. Having said that, DS1 has all black, like 70% of his wardrobe!

I believe it has 2 functions (do t ask me !). My DD a lovely raspberry one. Definitely get engraved as they get put down

opoponax · 28/09/2022 12:56

Just the one they all have I believe @Bimkom. I think go for whatever colour he likes best. Mine went for a navy as it was slightly different from all the black ones.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 28/09/2022 14:09

DD was given one (a Littmann Classic iii) by her godmother as a present for doing so well in her A' levels. She asked for a wacky colour and got one - lime green!

olafolaf · 28/09/2022 14:23

DD has just ordered hers today in "plum" 😂She is day 3 into her first week at HYMS and I couldn't get her off the phne last night, she was so excited. And a bit shocked at her first experience of a cadaver 😱

Haffdonga · 28/09/2022 16:22

Ds2 says definitely get your stethoscope engraved because the consultants just 'borrow' one from a passing junior rather than carry their own.
Ds1 is in his first full week - so far so good and very pleased to be in a tutor group with a 39 year old so he's a mere child in comparison.

mumsneedwine · 28/09/2022 18:35

So glad they are all enjoying themselves. DD warns that human dissection makes you hungry so don't be worried as it's totally normal. Lots of MaccyD trips after that session.

Solarlantern · 28/09/2022 22:24

DS saw the BMA engraving offer but has been told he won't need one for the first year so to wait. His grandfather however dug out an old one DS's uncle used to use and sent him off with it - not sure it would be quite as good as the latest model now though! Good to hear everyone is settling in - after the whirl of Freshers DS is definitely buckling down ready for some earlier starts...

KingscoteStaff · 29/09/2022 18:39

Has anyone bought the Gray's Anatomy Flashcards? DD wants to buy the 3rd edition (2015) for £10 off a friend, but shouldn't she really buy the brand new 4th edition (£30 on Amazon)?

Monkey2001 · 29/09/2022 20:53

@KingscoteStaff you can probably look at Amazon reviews, but does anatomy change?! DS1 prefers to use the resources recommended by his med school and makes his own flash cards (which are obviously a lot less flashy!)

OP posts:
KingscoteStaff · 29/09/2022 21:08

Well that's what I thought - but imagine the guilt if you bought the earlier (cheaper) version of the flashcards which omitted a crucial and recently-discovered body part!!!

KingscoteStaff · 24/10/2022 19:19

@Solarlantern Have you had the obligatory 'photo in my new scrubs'?!!

Solarlantern · 24/10/2022 20:15

@KingscoteStaff yes, I was actually driving back from seeing him today, and by the time I got back I had a selection of photos in scrubs and lab coat to review😂... apparently he's misjudged the size and they are a little roomy so to speak! Off to swap them for a more suitable size tomorrow, along with half the year I think..

Lovely to see him though, and pleased he's settled in so well. Slightly scary that his friends group are already talking about renting houses next year!

Monkey2001 · 25/10/2022 14:20

Well, my DS may not have got into medical school this year, but he has been wearing scrubs since August and he has a really nice colour - teal top and navy trousers. I think the colours vary a lot, Preston get grey, what do Newcastle students get?
