That is good news

Haffdonga · 13/05/2023 18:58

Congratulations on the successful interview @Xenia , the new job @Carriemac and your dd's clinical fellowship @Decorhate. It's great to hear about everyone doing what they've been aiming for all these years.

I'm mildly jealous of those of you in London with adult dc planning to return to the parental home as a work base one day. There's little chance either of our ds will ever return to our small town and they're both planning to join the F3 medics' exodus to Australia when the time comes (better pay, better conditions, better lifestyle and UK recognised accreditation so it's a bit of a no brainer, unfortunately for the NHS).

Good luck to the new job starters!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2023 20:08

Well done them, @Xenia !

DD and her BF have just got keys to their next rented house, smaller and more expensive but back in the town and (hopefully!) a better landlord, the last one was difficult.

Needmoresleep · 13/05/2023 20:44

Great to hear your news Xenia. It’s been a long road. How is your grandchild?

Also great to hear the medic news. DD is very pleased with the six placements (if that is what they are called) she has been allocated. A close friend of hers is from the place where they are both doing F1, so the mum is charged with finding them accommodation. My London raised daughter is stunned at how cheap it is. She is quite exited. Worry about training places can wait.

The graduation problem was solved. The University insisted the ceremonies all had to be in the same week, unfortunately the week medics started their F1. The solution is to have their ceremony on the Saturday. So a very late flight to Bristol on Friday night, ceremony, early evening meal with us, then out with friends, then return Sunday midday. Her second week of F2 will be tough.

DS’ summer internship is in what is apparent the most crime ridden city in the US. His job search next year will be worldwide. At best there will be about five suitable academic vacancies in the UK. I hope he makes it back to London, but understand that, like his sister, he will want to start his career away from home.

Well done to all the other DC. They are an impressive group.

Xenia · 13/05/2023 21:54

What a lot of interesting careers including the international ones and all the doctors too.

Haffdonga my uncle ( a doctor) and his wife emigrated to Tasmania and he enjoyed his time working there (and in fact they never settled back in the UK).

Need I am glad the graduation clash of dates was sorted out.

The youngest grandchild remains very sweet, a one year old toddler now, not a baby any more. Meanwhile my oldest son has come to stay for a few nights today. He didn't have an easy journey despite the fact that he comes here via bus (then tube) because everyone was crowding on the buses due to the rail strike but he managed to squeeze on a bus so it was fine in the end.
Plus my other son has a friend to stay for 2 nights so quite a full house as usual.

Delighted to report DD has just passed part one of her law professional exams

Needmoresleep · 19/05/2023 15:09

🎉 🎉 🎉

bigTillyMint · 19/05/2023 18:13

Congratulations to her @Carriemac!

Xenia · 19/05/2023 19:09

Well done to the law daughter of @Carriemac

This is our first summer for many many years of no exams for any of my 5 as they are all over. As my daughter did GCSEs about 22 years ago I have had a lot of summers of exams so quite nice to be free of the stress.

Many congratulations to @Carriemac's DD.

Xenia · 07/06/2023 12:06

I am not letting the thread die just yet. Hope everyone's children are doing fine. This is our first summer without exams for years so more relaxed and the twins qualify next year as solicitors so will need to start thinking about finding a newly qualified job towards end of this year. Both are seconded to a different in-house legal department at the moment (but can work 2 days a week from home here which is a nice balance).

Needmoresleep · 07/06/2023 13:41

I think this is DDs last week of being a student. She has paid rent till the end of the month, so is staying on for a bit. Her brother is coming back from the US to renew his visa, so is required to visit.

I think she starts her F1 at the beginning of August but wants to go out early to sort things out, which does not leave much time. Apart from lockdown she has gone back every year to her old school when they run a residential week for disabled adults, and is hoping to do so again. She is also inviting me to go away for a few days with her, suggesting northern France where we used to go on family holidays. It will be interesting to see what she remembers.

It is quite an exciting time. She is really looking forward to going somewhere new.

Needmoresleep · 07/06/2023 13:43

And Xenia, good to hear about the twin’s progress. I hope they do well with their job hunt.

Carriemac · 07/06/2023 15:28

DD has been offered a training contract at the firm she interned with in May and starts September 23! So pleased for her

ErrolTheDragon · 07/06/2023 17:41

Our sailing course didn't go quite to plan as DH unfortunately had a health issue and had to jump ship on the second day. Probably as well that was in Portsmouth rather than somewhere in the Ionian as per original plan. He did some family history stuff in the area he'd been meaning to do at some point and DD and I enjoyed sailing (and briefly swimming) in the Solent. Then we took her back to Cambridge and she took us kayaking and punting so we had a thorough mix of aquatic activities Grin

bigTillyMint · 07/06/2023 18:35

Congratulations to your DD @Carriemac 🎉
Thats great - I bet she’s made up.
Did she have to apply “again” after the internship?

Sounds like you managed to save the holiday @ErrolTheDragon

How exciting for your DD @Needmoresleep!

Excellent!

RedHelenB · 07/06/2023 19:26

Just had a quick catch up of everyone s news. Looks like they're all doing brilliantly. Dd1 has really enjoyed her first year of NHS dentistry in practice and is really thrilled to have got her first choice DCT contract for the next 2 years.

bigTillyMint · 07/06/2023 19:28

@RedHelenB, that’s great - is she going to be moving?

Xenia · 07/06/2023 20:13

Well done on the training contract offer. We will have to see if my twins can get newly qualified jobs next year when they qualify only having trained at their mother's firm although currently seconded for 6 months elsewhere (which of course we have always known will make things harder but better than not qualifying and I am sure they will be fine).

A whole year of dentistry - time is flying by. We need her to set up in my oldest son's area in due course where there is no NHS dentist (he comes 3 hours by public transport to use his existing one here at home - 3 hours each way so usually combines it with a nice little few nights of visit at home).

End of an era for the Need daughter finishing being a student. Some of these professions are very long to get qualified - we have at least 3 trainee lawyers, the dentist and the doctor on this thread, or rather the mothers of them.

Errol so sorry about the husband, but at least it was before you were in more difficult waters or abroad I suppose.

Congratulations to @Carriemac 's dd on the training contract and to @RedHelenB 's dd for her contract. Great news both!

@ErrolTheDragon I hope your dh is feeling better.

Ds has been signed off his final placement and is living the golden days between finishing his course and starting work, with multiple parties, holidays and a grad ball weekend in between. Next issue is to find a flat near his new job. He'll be sharing with an old school friend, also a medic, and they've been pipped at the post for 4 or 5 houses already.

Xenia · 11/06/2023 13:40

Haffdonga good luck to your son finding a flat. Having someone with whom to share is half the battle so that is a good start even though there seems to be quite a lot of demand and not enough properties to rent at present in places where there are jobs.

The summer can certainly be a lovely time between exams and first job to have such a relaxed time. Both my twis are seconded to in-house legal departments where they have just been told for 3 months over the summer the lawyers all have Friday afternoons off (although there is a rota of cover set up so someone is on call) which sounds lovely so at lunch time on Friday they had worked fro home all morning and then could could go out on a very long walk together from home and even sat in a field and played chess for a while, every different from my days as a trainee solicitor when you certainly did not get Friday afternoons off in the summer (although even in 2023 lawyers in law firms do NOT get Friday afternoons off)

I will not be letting the thread die until the twins qualify as solicitors next year..... I hope everyone's children are doing okay.

One twin gets back from holiday today with his girlfriend and the other goes away on holiday on Friday (June is quite a good time as no school children there and prices not jacked up for summer holidays yet).

One went to a law firm's conference with his colleague yesterday which was very interesting. The other has his last day course whilst a trainee of a set of talks and one exam you have to go on as a trainee solicitor - the Professional Skills Course (which is being abolished shortly).

Or first summer without exams for years and years although they have cousins doing exams< one of my twins has always said he enjoys exams (goodness knows why) so he is not pleased there are none this year or ever again.

DDs term officially ends tomorrow. However her older brother still has a year to go, so happy to keep you company.

DDs friend is busy hunting for a flat for them. They narrowly missed out on Tuesday, but are hoping for good news today about the one they saw yesterday. DD is planning to arrive with all her stuff in a couple of weeks time so hopefully they will have something by then. DS is stuck with us, as he waits for his visa to come through. It’s probably the last time they will be at home together. It feels very ordinary to us, but probably quite strange for them after so long away from home.

Stopyourhavering64 · 22/06/2023 09:58

My ds is now half way through his grad scheme....had experience in 2 departments so far and another 1 to go- he's still not sure what he'll do at end of scheme! ( although first department said they'd hire him)
My eldest dd has just finished her PGCE in primary education-( 11 years since first starting out on her university life!)
She already has an MA and MSc and had previously taught English in China for 21/2 years just before the pandemic (she was actually visiting us at home that Christmas and hasn't been able to get back into China since, so all her belongings and money are still out there!)
She's currently looking for teaching jobs, which isn't as easy as you'd think! ..she has interview with agency this afternoon so is thinking of doing supply work initially to get a feel for the different schools ...hopefully she'll be able to visit China soon and hopefully collect her belongings and money!
Younger daughter has just been home for a visit from SE Asia where she's been living/working for past 2 years and we are visiting her in September which will be amazing
Finally feel like they're all through the education mill and out the other end ...seems like a long 11 years!
