Would you give more money to one child?

We have two children, both of them are medics. This means their uni courses are long (6 years). Neither of them had much time to work during their later years.

Our son, started uni in Liverpool in 2012, and used the full pot of money (£20k) which we had set aside to give to him to help with living costs.

Our daughter started uni in 2017 in Bristol. It is an expensive city to rent in. She has finished the £20k pot we set aside. She says she can't afford her last year of uni unless we give her more money. This is because Bristol is a lot more expensive than Liverpool, and the cost of living is up almost 25% since her brother started.

We can afford to give her more, but dh refuses out of principal, that she chose how to spend the money. She had to go to Bristol, as that was her only offer.

I have no idea what my parents gave my brother while he was at uni or if it was the same as the amount they gave me - I absolutely wouldn't think it was unfair if they gave him more though if it was needed. I personally would want to support my child with their education as far as I could afford to and would be prepared to have an almighty argument with my DH if he didn't agree.

Of course she should get more money. Why the exact same amount when costs are different in each city, plus cost of living has risen. What does your husband want to happen? For her to drop out?

@Derkin I assume you have put your husband right?

My Mum bought 3 driving lessons for my niece for her 18th. At the time it cost £37.50. She gave all of her grandchildren 3 driving lessons. The final GC driving lessons cost £78. 11 years between oldest GC and youngest GC. Imagine if she had said all dgc will get £37.50 as first one got. Your DH needs to be more supportive of his dd. If Bristol was only offer she got it was not like she deliberately chose one of most expensive unis.

Absolutely yes; you can afford to, she’s right money doesn’t go as far ten years in. Your husband is being a prick.
