Thank you, I will pass this on to DC but I am not sure he will listen to me. The "more sensible" housemates are medics so they may not think about it....

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 25/05/2022 16:58

@VanCleefArpels funnily enough DD just messaged me about this today. Her whole house staying on for Masters but apparently will have one week that they are liable.

Feels very sneaky and unfair-very pencil pushy...

VanCleefArpels · 25/05/2022 18:14

@mumsiedarlingrevolta some councils won’t bother, others are Rottweilers. All they can do is wait and see if a bill pops through the door!

LouisCatorze · 27/05/2022 14:33

Think it's totally unfair particularly when their house-share will have been secured first and foremost to enable them to complete their undergraduate studies, not necessarily to be hanging around in their uni town or city just because their contract doesn't end for another couple of months.

simbobs · 27/05/2022 17:01

DS won't have the remotest idea about this council tax issue, and I am reluctant to tell him as he already thinks me the harbinger of doom. He and 3 current housemates have decided to stay in uni city over the summer as they all have jobs there. The let starts in July, regardless of whether they are staying there or not. I think contacting the council a bad idea as it would only flag them up when they might have got away with it.

Benjispruce4 · 27/05/2022 17:07

I’m not mentioning it either.

bigTillyMint · 27/05/2022 17:13

Im pretty sure we had to pay some council tax when DD was finished her undergrad degree and before she started her Masters - Bristol were hot on it! However I have no intention of paying the week after Durham finishing and his contract ending!

icanbewhatiwant · 27/05/2022 17:34

I think if it's an HMO they aren't liable for council tax. A lot of student accommodation will be HMO.

pointythings · 27/05/2022 19:18

DD1 is staying in her uni town and working - there are 4 of them in the house, 2 have one more year of study to go, the other two will be working. They have agreed to share the council tax liability between them.

VanCleefArpels · 27/05/2022 23:41

@simbobs @Benjispruce4 - the council will have the Uni certification of the last date of student status. If they have a policy of charging after that date a bill will land on the doormat regardless. Maybe better to give them some forewarning? @icanbewhatiwant HMO licensing regimes not at all universal across different council areas yet so it will be hit & miss

Benjispruce4 · 27/05/2022 23:44

She’ll deal with it if and when it comes . In our case it’s not much so I know it will fall on deaf ears.

simbobs · 28/05/2022 06:48

@VanCleefArpels you are probably right. I think they will charge as one of the housemates isn't a student and he pays. I have asked DS to contact me over the weekend so will add this to the list of things to discuss.

simbobs · 30/05/2022 20:45

OK, so now that DS has tried to apply for next year's student finance nothing further is showing on his account, ie an assumption seems to have been made that he has finished. I have been trying to work out how to apply for an additional year but can't find anything. There is a note saying that he may have to send a letter explaining why he deferred, after making the application, but no advice how to apply for such a thing. Any wise words? I am going to ring the university tomorrow to try and speak to someone, but am feeling really worried now.

AtiaoftheJulii · 01/06/2022 18:40

When did he defer simbobs? Dd1 suspended her studies for a year but I don’t remember there being any issue when she restarted. She’s travelling home from holiday tonight but I’ll ask her if she had to do anything special.

Ds has 2 more exams next week and that’s that. He ummed and aahed about doing an integrated masters but decided against it. He and his girlfriend picked up the keys to a flat today (rented!) as they both have jobs lined up in their uni city and wanted to get a place together - seems very grown up!

Ingles2 · 01/06/2022 18:53

how fantastic to see that you are still going on this thread... Can't believe 3 years are up already, it's certainly been an odd and rather stressful time.
Both of mine have suffered with MH issues so I'm super chuffed for DS1 who is about to graduate from Loughborough in Econ.. He has a graduate scheme job at PWC in Leeds which is amazing and should suit him down to the ground..
DS2 is doing an integrated Masters in Maths with Physics at Durham ,so still has another year but has really struggled with anxiety over this last exam period, so definitely need to get him some support. I really hope all your children get the results the have worked so hard for and can move onto what they want to do next, easily and happily.. x

simbobs · 01/06/2022 20:08

@AtiaoftheJulii DS deferral just before Xmas. I have since found out that the break in study request was not done properly, and they may have concluded that he had just left, so he is writing to student support stating his case and asking for help going forward. At least, that is what he is supposed to be doing. He will be feeling really disheartened to learn at this stage that continuing may not be an option. It is a real mess, and as it is now a Bank Holiday there is nobody there until Monday. I am seriously annoyed that nobody followed up. He is partly to blame, too.

RampantIvy · 01/06/2022 22:15

Goodness @simbobs. Your DC have had a rocky higher education road. I really hope that your DS can resolve this.

simbobs · 01/06/2022 23:17

Thanks, @RampantIvy, I hope so, too.

ZandathePanda · 02/06/2022 09:52

Hope you get it sorted quickly simbobs how frustrating and worrying.

Dd just told me the final classification results come out on 1st July.

LouisCatorze · 02/06/2022 10:20

@simbobs so sorry to hear this for your DS. How frustrating and just Sod's Law that when you want to sort it out, you're faced with an extra long BH weekend. Fingers crossed that you can get it sorted out next week.

@AtiaoftheJulii well done to your DS for getting a graduate job sorted. Impressive.

Yes, clocked that DS should get his result by the beginning of July at the latest.

bigTillyMint · 02/06/2022 10:24

@simbobs, how horrible - hopefully it can be sorted out asap. Would have to happen on a BH.

No idea when DSs results are out, but I’m guessing end of June as he graduates 1st July

Is that for all subjects? I don't think DD knows. She is half way through exams now. The next one is a 48 hour one then she has a three and three quarter hour one in person straight afterwards.

ZandathePanda · 02/06/2022 14:02

@RampantIvy not sure sorry but that date is a Friday and results always seem to come out on a Friday for everyone.

simbobs · 02/06/2022 14:22

I don't know how it is done these days but when I was at uni we all had to go to our faculty and there was a sheet of A4 pinned to the noticeboard with all results by classification, so everyone could see what everyone else had got, too.

LouisCatorze · 02/06/2022 14:55

Yes, that definitely was a thing @simbobs . Nowadays it would probably be classed as a massive GDPR fail to do so.
