No she doesn’t @RampantIvy . A 120000 word dissertation plus several other summatives. She still has to complete her report on her findings from the field trip abroad so not quite finished.

Benjispruce4 · 19/05/2022 06:59

To be perfectly honest, she may have done a presentation already. I don’t know the ins and outs.

RampantIvy · 19/05/2022 07:00

That is a lot of work. DD's dissertation was about 5,000 words. Although she was significantly over her word count and really struggled to condense it.

Benjispruce4 · 19/05/2022 07:04

I think I remember you saying that your DD had been given a title for her diss. In DD’s subject, she chose a research area last year and has been researching since then and collating data before writing the diss .

VanCleefArpels · 19/05/2022 07:31

My DS didn’t do a presentation for his dissertation- I’ve never heard of that. Terrifying!! One thing he did do is get a copy of the dissertation nicely bound in a book (if I recall the university offered this service) which means it’s preserved for posterity.

RampantIvy · 19/05/2022 07:42

DD spent all of the Easter holidays practising her presentation when she could have been getting revision done.

Yes, the presentation was terrifying. She takes medication for anxiety anyway, so her stress levels were sky high.

I don't think they get a bound copy of their dissertations.

bigTillyMint · 19/05/2022 07:56

I wonder if the presentations are for science subjects? Mine didn’t do them for their Humanities degrees, but they did do 12k word dissertations like @Benjispruce4 DD, choosing the area to study and their own titles. They have to print their dissertations off if they want a copy - not like when I paid a woman to type it then bound it myself 😁

ZandathePanda · 19/05/2022 08:01

@RampantIvy the Robinson library will do it for a few. Dd also got a professional copy done (cost £30!!) at somewhere in the city centre. It looks amazing for interviews she says!

ZandathePanda · 19/05/2022 08:01

Fee not few

RampantIvy · 19/05/2022 08:19

Thank you @ZandathePanda.

Yes, maybe they are just for science subjects @bigTillyMint. It looks like they are shorter than humanities ones. They didn't get details of their dissertations until after Christmas, and everyone struggled to get theirs in on time.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/05/2022 14:15

Ds had to do a presentation for biology. All about the mouse dropping research I spoke of earlier.

RampantIvy · 19/05/2022 15:57

I remember that he had quite a struggle with his dissertation @icanbewhatiwant. How did his presentation go?

icanbewhatiwant · 19/05/2022 16:05

@RampantIvy Ds said the presentation could have gone better but was ok. He couldn't get his data graphs correct. No one seemed to be able to help him. One of the results was coming up as zero but shouldn't be zero. Several people tried. So I'm not sure what happened in the end, whether he sorted it or not. I'm sure I'll find out eventually.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/05/2022 16:07

Just wanted to come on bursting with pride-

DD did not get on to one of the seminars she wanted this semester-and ended up with one she very much did not want. I'm not sure how they allocate them but I felt a bit ferocious that first year clouded by strikes, then covid and now, after all this money she is not even getting to study what she wanted.

She did try to get on the course she wanted -but to no avail and she told me-quite rightly-to step back. She always has a good attitude but it was really really not what she wanted!!!

She has just gotten back her paper-wasn't a Diss but one of those 12,000 word sumnitives and has received one of 2 Firsts on the course!!

So proud and can't really shout it from the rooftops here...

ZandathePanda · 19/05/2022 16:11

Fantastic news! 🍾

RampantIvy · 19/05/2022 16:22

Well done to your DD @mumsiedarlingrevolta.

Benjispruce4 · 19/05/2022 16:34

Ahh brilliant @mumsiedarlingrevolta enjoy your DD’s success Perseverance through adversity. 😁

LouisCatorze · 19/05/2022 17:02

Well done to your DD @mumsiedarlingrevolta . That makes it all seem worthwhile.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/05/2022 17:13

Thanks lovely MNers-

Nice to share with a supportive group who are going through the same ups and downs as you are!!!!

Come on Graduation!!!!!

bigTillyMint · 19/05/2022 17:13

Well done to her @mumsiedarlingrevolta

LouisCatorze · 20/05/2022 07:51

We spoke with DS yesterday evening. He said he doesn't think he's done well in his dissertation, although there was no mention of that when he was doing it. Oh dear Sad. My feeling was that with humanities-based course, the dissertation gave one the opportunity to really focus on something of real interest and 'roll with it'.

When do the final year students get their degree results? Presumably ahead of their graduation ceremonies (unless striking academics are an issue)?

RampantIvy · 20/05/2022 08:14

Does he have exams as well @LouisCatorze? Could he claw back some ground with them?

DD has no idea how well she did in her dissertation. Her tutor didn't have to make many suggestions for amendments though on the final draught.

LouisCatorze · 20/05/2022 10:15

It transpires that DS didn't have a 'final diss meet' with his tutor before he submitted it. Maybe there's a reason why he didn't?? So goodness knows what he was doing. He didn't say anything about having problems with it at the time. He's got one more module to submit (his exams were in January) and then that's it. He has always been someone who we've felt hasn't achieved what he's capable of. Always thought his degree would mark the change in fortune but it seems as if potentially not.

Maybe he's just being pessimistic but who knows?

icanbewhatiwant · 20/05/2022 20:24

@mumsiedarlingrevolta congrats to dd.

bigTillyMint · 21/05/2022 13:29

@LouisCatorze fingers crossed for your DS. Mine is also waiting on the results of his diss. He seemed to think they will be released with degree classification. DD got hers before IIRC.
