Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

PS can go on a Banksy tour - just walk round city and see how many you can find.

Monkey2001 · 25/03/2022 18:01

Go to Goldney hall if open, lovely gardens with grotto.

We are on the way up to York this evening. I’ve definitely got newbie nerves about this! DD is toured separately to me for a short time while their ‘guests’ are shown other parts and given tea / coffee. I’m more worried than she is!!

Haffdonga · 25/03/2022 20:39

Congratulations @speedyhedgehog 's ds. That one offer is a life-changing thing.

@BabbleBee what are your worries about the offer holder day? I'm sure you'll both have a great day Smile

BabbleBee · 25/03/2022 20:50

@Haffdonga I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s a bit like imposter syndrome I suppose!

Haffdonga · 25/03/2022 20:57

Ah. @BabbleBee there'll be lots of dds and dss (and their parents) feeling exactly the same as you but they're all just people feeling gobsmacked and relieved to be there.

Hope you get a chance to enjoy York. It's a great city.

KitchenAider · 25/03/2022 21:00

@BabbleBee your DD has done brilliantly to get the offer and you have been right by her side supporting her. Anything but imposters. Hold your head up high and be proud of your clever girl! Flowers

BabbleBee · 25/03/2022 21:01

@Haffdonga thank you. I know I won’t be the only one feeling overwhelmed but I’m not the most rational person when it comes to social situations Grin

I love York, it’s beautiful. We came up in the summer last year and I was surprised at how busy it was! It’s a long way from home though and this trip is a bit of a reminder of how far away DD is going to be….

BabbleBee · 25/03/2022 21:03

@KitchenAider oh I am so very proud of her. She’s worked bloody hard for this since year 9 with the widening participation programme and everything else she’s done. I’ve been unwell and in hospital and literally any doctor that would listen I told them she had 2 offers, asked where they went to uni…. Grin

KitchenAider · 25/03/2022 21:20

@BabbleBee and rightly so. Hope things improve for you health-wise and that you both have a great trip to York.

mumsneedwine · 25/03/2022 21:26

@BabbleBee DD had imposter syndrome all of first year. Everyone else seemed to be related to a medic and so confident. Now, in 4th year, she knows she's in the right job 😊

BabbleBee · 26/03/2022 09:29

@mumsneedwine it’s me not her 😂

Solarlantern · 26/03/2022 10:47

@BabbleBee- enjoy York, it's a lovely place..your comments about hospital made me smile (and I hope you are feeling better!) as I have also been in hospital this week and have been doing exactly the same with various doctors! The anaesthetist was explaining which jobs are the ones he'd avoid as I drifted off to sleep Grin.

KingscoteStaff · 26/03/2022 17:24

Well my considered opinion on Bristol is that it’s really sunny and there are lots of nice coffee shops!

No goody bags or free pens, though…

KingscoteStaff · 26/03/2022 18:29

And apparently Newcastle is offering a buffet lunch next week - vol au vents a go go!

BabbleBee · 26/03/2022 20:45

York has been a really good day. DD enjoyed it a lot! As did I, spoke to a few parents and it was good to speak to others about the process face to face.

Monkey2001 · 27/03/2022 19:01

@BabbleBee hope the imposer syndrome now cured!

@KingscoteStaff was that a positive day in Bristol? It is tempting for the Newcastle waiting list people to pray for miserable weather for Newcastle so people pick sunnier alternatives! 😉

OP posts:
opoponax · 27/03/2022 19:05

Apparently the weather has been beautiful in Newcastle so hold off those visits for now! Wink

KingscoteStaff · 27/03/2022 19:07

The only thing that is a down side to Bristol is the academy system. The thought of potentially spending one half of her 3rd year in Swindon and the other in Taunton...? She wouldn't be able to take part in any societies / sport / socialising during the week.

But maybe 3rd year medics don't do any of those things anyway?

mumsneedwine · 27/03/2022 19:44

@KingscoteStaff at most Unis they will be away on placements from year 3 or 4. Newcastle lot can end up quite a long way from Newcastle.
They are not alone though. Lots go together and make new friends and have a v fun time - just check the Uni provide accommodation for free. Can always go back to Bristol at weekends (easy train trip to Taunton and Swindon).

BabbleBee · 27/03/2022 20:28

@Monkey2001 yes, I soon settled thank you.

@KingscoteStaff the 3rd year students I was chatting to yesterday at HYMS were still very active in their societies especially the netball team!

mumsneedwine · 27/03/2022 20:54

DD still doing a few societies in 4th year. V v a part time due to workload and placements. They find a way 😊

opoponax · 27/03/2022 21:03

Agree @Mumsneedwine. DS is just starting to think about Newcastle Year 3 placement situation. I think they all do Newcastle/environs, Middlesborough/Teesside and Northumberland for placements but the order in which they do them varies. DS says everyone he has spoken to has been positive about the different clinical experiences.

Monkey2001 · 28/03/2022 00:02

I am fairly sure Bristol students get accommodation provided in Taunton and Swindon, so can keep their accom in Bristol - @mumsneedwine is that right? At the Newcastle open day they said there would be a year when you weren't in Newcastle, but which year it was would vary. I think that is fairer than Manchester, where around 10% are randomly allocated to Preston for years 3-5. DS1 will find out soon which hospital in Manchester he will be based in, will be happy with anything except Preston as he wants the big city life.

@Monkey2001 I'm not 100% sure on Bristols current rules (mine's a vet there 😊). Can help with Nottingham if anyone needs that - they do provide free accommodation if in Mansfield or Boston. Or petrol money if choose to drive.
Most Unis are going to have placements at a variety of hospitals and by 4th year it's pretty much a full time job. With no money. And a degree still to study for. Somehow they still find time for a little bit of fun.
