Best wishes to all of your DC that are starting at Durham😊

I remember dropping my DS off last year and I was so worried and anxious.

I'm glad to report that he has had a great year and can't wait to return for his second year.

Tell your DC to make the most of all of the opportunities that come their way. Durham is a beautiful and safe city and I'm sure that they will all have an amazing time there.

Good luck all ☘

KingscoteStaff · 23/09/2022 19:48

Have a great moving day chaps and don’t forget that the Dunelm/tescos/Home Bargains up beyond Gilesgate has everything you haven’t yet realised you’ve forgotten…

Good luck to all new starters.
We are dropping Dd off to her 2nd year accommodation tomorrow. So much stuff.. am not sure it will fit in the car!

Wordlewobble · 24/09/2022 07:43

Thanks hope it goes smoothly for everyone and those in flats and town houses etc get on and get along. We have a early start/early drop off Sunday just hope it will all fit in the car. We haven’t had a practice run so fingers crossed.

Can I ask a question abut applying to Durham? (I was at Mary's about a hundred years ago, but things are so different now...). Does my DS need to identify a college preference on his UCAS form? We're presuming his choice has no effect on his chances - are there any implications of not naming one at this stage? I've read two conflicting bits of advice recently, one saying that he does need to name a college, and one saying that he doesn't...

No. He no longer needs to do that.

Watsername · 24/09/2022 10:05

Good luck to those moving in! We’re on our way! So excited….!

EwwSprouts · 24/09/2022 11:56

Good luck to all arriving today, whatever year!

Bonkus · 24/09/2022 12:43

Good luck to all those arriving today! This was us last year and Durham has been amazing for DS.
We went with DS to drop off his stuff at his 2nd year shared house last week and then he goes back on his own on Monday.
Whatever year your DC is in - wishing them all the best for an awesome year - academically and socially!

GoldenRuby · 24/09/2022 17:59

She's in. A lovely welcome from the freps at St John's. A nice room - long and thin but with a small double bed and two large windows looking out on to trees. Two bathrooms between 7 rooms on her small corridor. Not many people about on her corridor, the one who was was an overseas student doing their year abroad at Durham. She took herself off into one of the other blocks to try to find people, and met another girl who she is going into dinner with this evening. All good so far.

KingscoteStaff · 24/09/2022 18:10

Sounds great @GoldenRuby - are you staying overnight or heading off?

OP posts:
HighlandCowbag · 24/09/2022 18:11

Mine is in as well, the freps were so efficient weren't they?

She's found her best mate from school and another lovely lad they knock around with. We took her for some lunch, had a mooch round the centre and could see she was itching to find her mates again and start sorting her room out. She's got a single ensuite so very chuffed with it, its bigger than I thought with really well thought out storage. So left her to it.

Durham is lovely tho. Quite fancy a weekend up there at some point.

GoldenRuby · 24/09/2022 18:45

@KingscoteStaff no, we've headed off. We drove up yesterday - it took 7 hours from Surrey including stops (not helped by taking an age to queue at the Birchanger services on the M11 - definitely one to avoid in future) and stopped the night with friends who live 30 mins away from Durham. We are treating ourselves to a night in a nice hotel on the way back down.

GoldenRuby · 24/09/2022 18:46

@HighlandCowbag - sounds like your DD is well set up. Is she in The Garth? My DD is in Linton.

Fruitygal · 24/09/2022 19:25

Super welcome from John Snow freps today!! Room is lovely and all flatmates friendly. Lots of things organised for them.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 24/09/2022 20:13

To all fresher parents dropping off today - count yourself very lucky that you can just pop into any service station you like and fill up on your way home!

Last year, us fresher parents weren't so lucky due to the fuel crisis! We were more concerned about our fuel consumption than our DC on drop off day

Longtimenewsee · 24/09/2022 20:36

Gosh @MidLifeCrisis007 I'd completely forgotten about that!
Dd is ensconced back in Durham . Lovely room in viaduct area .I took Dd and to big tesco before leaving.. never again!- it was hellish!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 24/09/2022 20:38

Hope they are all settling in well, lots of very full cars around when I was in town earlier!

Went for cake at Vennel's (up the Vennel near Waterstones) while the kids were at book club and still get recognised by the staff even though it can be 2 or 3 years between visits. They first knew dh and I as students and always remember us! Dh graduated in 2007 and I followed in 2008 having taken my time having a baby during the degree.

Fruitygal · 24/09/2022 23:03

Any ideas for good places for brunch in the morning?

Fruitygal · 24/09/2022 23:07

Random question has anyone bought a house in Durham for their child and friends to live in after 1st year - if so any pearls of wisdom etc

KingscoteStaff · 24/09/2022 23:49

Chapters on Old Elvet is excellent. Opposite Klute!

My son's been at Collingwood for a couple of weeks and didn't see many freshers arriving yesterday.

Have they split it so it's more Bailey on the Saturday and Hill on the Sunday?

Fruitygal · 25/09/2022 08:25

@red4321 loads of kids arriving at South, snow and Butler yesterday plus traffic down to Van Mildert too - know that Stephenson, Snow and South also have drop offs today. Collins wood entrance looked quiet

Fruitygal · 25/09/2022 08:33

Thanks @KingscoteStaff going to your recommendation then proper shop in Tescos and say our goodbyes

Thanks. He's keen to finally meet the other freshers so I'm sure he'll see some today.

EwwSprouts · 25/09/2022 09:18

@red4321 We're heading up to Stephenson today. Just about to play car tetris!
