Are your DCs back to face to face lectures?

DD at Warwick found out today that all of her lectures will be online and 50% of seminars and tutorials will be too.
I am livid! Schools and colleges are back to normal. Can't believe I'm paying £9k for another year of her sitting in her room!
What's happening where yours are?

DS is at UEA too. He has all the lectures (some live, some recorded) online, placement and other stuff f2f (doing medicine).

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/10/2021 14:43

Kings:

On line lectures ftf seminars.
Although it is annoying I think it is a good compromise as it provides education for those that are overseas or isolating etc at the same time as allowing the students to have the more personal and interactive experience of classroom teaching. Rates are sky high among the young and some distancing and reduction in contacts is the price to pay for not shutting down altogether.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 08/10/2021 01:20

Exeter are all f2f.

clan17 · 08/10/2021 08:49

Durham 5/6 modules f2f, tutorials and labs f2f.

therespectablecardigan · 08/10/2021 08:50

Dd 1st year allied health care degree, only in uni 2 days a fortnight. Very, very glad she decided to stay at home!

Fifthtimelucky · 08/10/2021 08:52

SOAS (Masters):

  • all lectures online for this term but hoping to go face to face in January
  • tutorials and seminars: face to face
VanCleefArpels · 08/10/2021 08:56

Kent: lectures online, everything else face to face, campus fully open including all libraries, catering, theatre, sports hall etc. I’m told no one cares about the lectures being online - some find it a benefit in fact- but otherwise enjoying normal student life

repsullburden · 08/10/2021 09:59

About 75% online for DS. All small seminars/tutorial type groups that could easily be f2f. About half of the online sessions don't work for whatever reason it is that day, so he's missing loads of content. 50:50 chance that he will not make it to Christmas.

RampantIvy · 08/10/2021 22:47

Yes. Newcastle are doing mostly F2F (for now anyway).

mushroom3 · 09/10/2021 01:14

Newcastle and Swansea, both mostly F2F with a couple of lectures per week being on-line

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 09/10/2021 01:20

Dd at Glasgow, mix of online and in person . She is actually quite glad of the online stuff as she came back from freshers week with covid, so could still learn while isolating, and can catch things up at her own pace. Now she's back in her student flat she can go at her own pace and still have the student life. Win/win. I would have loved to have all the resources online as a student! I was terrible for not getting up in the morning and having to beg/ borrow/but other people's lecture notes!!

Kanaloa · 09/10/2021 01:33

Two of my classes are in person, two online. I found it very confusing. Surely it’s either okay to be in person, or it isn’t? All the classes are roughly the same size so it’s not a limit of eg only 20 people in the room or something.

One of the online ones was supposed to be hybrid but the teacher basically said oh we’ll meet up twice in the term so it can be classed as hybrid but most people say they prefer online. Nobody I’ve asked has said this so not sure why the teacher thinks that.

WyfOfBathe · 09/10/2021 02:00

DNiece at Sheffield - one of her lectures is currently online because the lecturer is self-isolating. Everything else f2f, which she’s very happy about.

bengalcat · 09/10/2021 04:42

F2F - Durham . DD thrilled .

Eve · 09/10/2021 04:47

Loughborough engineering mainly all f2f and full on freshers which DS is doing to the full having missed it all last year.

Snozzlemaid · 09/10/2021 05:26

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav

Exeter are all f2f.
Exeter isn't f2f for all subjects. My dd hads a mix and this week it's been mostly online and she only had one f2f all week. Her flatmates however have much more f2f and have been in almost every day this week.
aramox · 09/10/2021 06:49

Some lecturers are still shielding, or need to lip-read so can't work with masks.

Xenia · 09/10/2021 09:48

It will be interesting to see if expected huge flu outbreak takes place this year and the effect on all those small children who in a sense are now like remote tribesmen who have never encountered other and so have no immunity at all to common colds and other things. We have made a terrible experiment internationally with lockdowns. My sons and I have not even had a cold for 2 years (which is lovely) but one was saying one girl was coughing all the time in class last week so I suppose colds and coughs will be back with avengeance soon.

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/10/2021 14:19

At mine - all "lectures" still online (live or recorded)... workshops and seminars are back face to face.

Our department just labelled everything they submitted to timetabling as "workshop" so we're fully face to face (there's not really a distinction between them with the size and nature of our course - everything is very workshops)

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/10/2021 14:20

Biggest issue on campus at the moment incidentally is the fact that security are tearing their hair out at the staff having forgotten how to park in the unmarked carpark that has to be filled quite carefully to fit enough cars in! There've been crashes and all sorts!

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 09/10/2021 14:22

Sorry @Snozzlemaid should have clarified Geography at Exeter seems to be F2F. My DD is very happy with how the teaching is going with the exception of one dull module!

BeyondMyWits · 09/10/2021 14:30

Dd20 at Swansea, lectures online, seminars, tutorials F2F. (Language based so no problems, she said it is easier than having to take notes realtime)
Dd19 at Bath, mostly F2F (science based, lots of labs)

Ironoaks · 09/10/2021 15:16

Cambridge:

Second year Physics: the lectures are 'hybrid': half the cohort attends in person and the other half watches online; the two groups alternate. Practicals will hopefully all be in person.

Second year Mathematics (for physicists): all lectures are face-to-face.

Supervisions will hopefully be face-to-face but will depend on each individual supervisor.

My dd is 2nd year Medical Sciences and she's happy enough with the teaching being a mix. She prefers lectures online so she can watch when she wants and stop to make notes. And whilst her small group learning is online, her group have decided to book a room occasionally to meet and work together.
MatildaJayne · 10/10/2021 11:58

2nd year at Manchester. Everything F2F so far this year after nothing F2F last year. They still have some students on zoom etc for tutorials and have lectures online for those who aren’t in Manchester yet. Such a relief after last year which was pants.
