Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

@seekinglondonlife do check with Manchester. They have made a few errors this year - Monkey is right with the cut off 😊.
Both other choices she has a good chance if good GCSEs and work experience.

And don't believe everything you see on TSR - some exaggeration does go on. V v few people get over 3,000 and they are more likely to post than the 2500 lot, so it looks like more of them. Still a long way to go (but do send a nice email to M if have B2 or 1 just to check - no harm 🤞).

mumsneedwine · 30/12/2021 18:41

@FanSpamTastic 4 interviews just shows how a gap year can change everything 😊😊. Good luck 🤞

opoponax · 31/12/2021 02:31

@seekinglondonlife there is absolutely nothing wrong with a UCAT of 2730! Take TSR scores with a pinch of salt - it is only a small sample of applicants and you really don't need a UCAT of 3000+ in any case. Once you are through to interview, in most situations the clock resets to zero. Tell your DD to focus more of where she is in the deciles and she is ranking well. She has already proved to herself that she can get an interview and hopefully it will come good for her this year. I agree with Monkey that they never really know how they have done in interview. If it doesn't work out this year, your DD knows she can do well in the UCAT again and then it is just down to strategic application and building on interview technique. Being a year more mature and having HCA or similar experience should help a lot in that area. It is so hard for them to put themselves out there, especially in years of real uncertainty like these but it would be such a shame for her to settle for second best when it is all within her reach. Good luck.

Hi, I am seeking advice on this thread for a friend. Her DD applied for medicine and has has been rejected by most of the unis she applied to. She is still waiting for one but in the meantime, looking at things to do next year. What sort of things should she be looking to do in her gap year? Is it better to take a gap year or try to get into a medical school abroad?

Monkey2001 · 31/12/2021 08:34

@BlueMarigold I would not want to look at a country where DC does not speak the language as that is an extra challenge. Ireland is a good option for high achievers with a GCSE in a language. I think the easiest way to get an NHS job is by applying to their local NHS Trust for bank work - worked very well for a friend who did portering in his gap year and continues to do shifts now that he is at university. It would be very easy to get work on a care home in a gap year.

I agree with Monkey2001 re challenge f studying in a country where one can't speak the language and care opportunities will be available as said. I do however know a mum with a son who went to Poland for med school, had after school Polish lessons and loved it there and is now married and settled there. One of DD's peers went to Belarus. Not something I would consider after one round though

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 05/01/2022 20:51

Remember that if they study in another country they will still have to pass the medical licensing assessment (MLA) to be allowed to practise in the UK.

SandyBayley · 06/01/2022 10:46

DD has a Leeds interview!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 06/01/2022 12:20

Congrats to your DD on the Leeds interview @SandyBayley

Monkey2001 · 06/01/2022 13:49

Good news on Leeds! We knew it was coming, but still a relief to get the invitation. Is that 4/4 now?

SandyBayley · 06/01/2022 13:50

Sadly not yet @Monkey2001 - still waiting to n Bristol but I see they are moving again today...

mumsneedwine · 06/01/2022 14:28

Bristol down to 2940 B2 - one of mine just got interview. Well done on Leeds 😊

bitsbots · 06/01/2022 16:25

My DS also got Bristol interview today - 2940 B2😊 he has booked it on 8th Feb.
Good luck every one!🤞

MidLifeCrisis007 · 06/01/2022 16:44

There will be some red faces at Exeter Med School today. They have royally messed up on their admissions admin!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 06/01/2022 16:55

DD was one of many students to get a congratulations on your offer email and we look forward to you joining in September only to be told it was an administrative error and no decisions will be made until March at the earliest.

What a right royal up by them.

bitsbots · 06/01/2022 18:00

sounds very odd! didn't they check the email before sending??

Haffdonga · 06/01/2022 18:30

Another 2940 B2 scraping a Bristol interview here.

mumsneedwine · 06/01/2022 18:41

Emails like Exeter's seem to happen every year. Someone doesn't proof read carefully enough !

SandyBayley · 06/01/2022 19:14

Don't say that @Haffdonga ! Need it to get down to 2880 for DD!

KingscoteStaff · 06/01/2022 19:28

Wow there are a lot of 2940 DC on here! DD also has Bristol interview!

@MidLifeCrisis007 That is truly rubbish from Exeter - how long between the 2 emails?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 06/01/2022 19:37

About 40 minutes!

They really didn't cover themselves in glory and have left a lot of students (all of whom have had their interviews) really disappointed.

The email was meant to simply canvas their views on how they found the interview process. But they clearly cut and paste something from last year into an email for this year's students. And all the people who'd received it last year were confirmed offer holders (hence congratulations on your offer and we look forward to seeing you in September....)

Monkey2001 · 06/01/2022 21:23

@MidLifeCrisis007 that is very bad from Exeter!

OP posts:
Haffdonga · 07/01/2022 12:35

Sorry to give you a jolt @SandyBayley - I'd only read through quickly and assumed 2940 was a weirdly high cut off point for Bristol this year, but of course it's just that day's emails.

Staggering f up from Exeter there - your poor dd @MidLifeCrisis007 !

opoponax · 07/01/2022 16:33

Congratulations to all on the latest flurry of interviews. Sorry to hear about the Exeter email @MidLifeCrisis007. Mistakes do happen but that's a particularly cruel one.

seekinglondonlife · 07/01/2022 17:33

Don't want to derail, but very quickly want to ask about Irish universities. I can't see anything on the websites about interviews, just the HPAT. Is this correct - they don't have any interview process?
