Which Uni for Economics- UEA or Cardiff?

Any experience/advice greatly appreciated! My DD finished ‘A levels’ and we’ve just done some non virtual look rounds both Unis and Cities- loved both but need to put one down as first choice ASAP!
She’s had same offers from both so now just making a pros and cons list - any thoughts??

@Piggywaspushed
There’s no point saying how good the QM modules might be at Cardiff when the DD has chosen UEA, either. But I wouldn’t dream of commenting.

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2021 22:14

I had not read the OP's most recent post at that point. I am glad she has made her choice.

Just popping on this thread to say my DN left UEA last year and had a great time at university.

Good luck to your DD.

Good choice @Allfurcoatandnoknickers. My DD absolutely hated Cardiff (Economics and Philosophy) and only lasted until mid-November before dropping out. This phrase stands out to me very hard working and not really a party girl - my DD might just have been unlucky with her flatmates, but she found the levels of drinking off the scale. She also hated the economics - extremely mathematical and taught by someone with a poor grasp of English. I realise that hers is just one experience and others may love it there, but I certainly could never recommend it (though I love the city).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 13/06/2021 09:19

@LillianGish hope your DD found a more suitable course (and a uni that better suited her)?

FWIW one of my exes went to Cardiff. They were about as unparty a person as you could get. Mind you, not sure they had the best of times.

LillianGish · 13/06/2021 10:14

Thanks @NewModelArmyMayhem18. She did - though Cardiff would not allow her to move courses which probably was for the best in the end. She’s at university in Paris now, loves her course and finds the socialising much more her style (Covid notwithstanding, but that’s another story).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 13/06/2021 10:53

That's good to hear @LillianGish. A bit mean that Cardiff Uni wouldn't let her move courses (UEA much more amenable like that - DN has just done so) but as you say, it's probably worked out for the best. Paris I'm sure is a much more fab place to be a student (assuming she's getting some type of proper uni experience).

LillianGish · 13/06/2021 11:43

A bit mean that Cardiff Uni wouldn't let her move courses and actually quite instructive @NewModelArmyMayhem18 as I think a lot of people assume it’s quite easy to switch. She would have had to finish the year and then start again the following year. She chose to cut her losses which was a hard decision at the time, but one I would now unhesitatingly recommend to anyone in a similar position. She had a proper rethink rather than making a speedy half-compromise. It wouldn’t be exaggerating to say she found the whole experience rather traumatic and it really knocked her confidence, but 18 months later, she couldn’t be happier. Covid has been another bump in the road of course, but her uni in Paris has been back on campus since March (after going online five weeks into the first term) - she feels she’s in the right place and on the right course.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 13/06/2021 15:02

That's really good to hear @LillianGish.

LillianGish · 13/06/2021 15:29

Thank you @NewModelArmyMayhem18 - I think it was you who started the original thread when she was first doing her UCAS application back in 2018/2019. I hope the rest of the cohort are doing well. There's so much help and support on here - Flowers

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/06/2021 07:36

@LillianGish we're still chatting if you'd like to dip back into the current thread? We'd be delighted to have you back.

SherryPalmer · 14/06/2021 08:18

I think your DD has made the right decision. UEA economics department has some strong specialities (competition policy, behavioural/experimental) and good teaching. The department has also improved massively over the last 20 years and I think some of the posts on here are a bit out-of-date.

Norwich is a lovely city to be a student in too.

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 15/06/2021 21:53

That’s great to hear thanks 😊

@lockdownbreakdown

Cardiff is Russell group I think or at least a high ranking red brick. UEA is good for the creative writing masters but that's about it. If she wants a job as a serious economist then it has to be Cardiff.
Pahahahah. Where did you get this info from? Yes the Creative Writing Masters is world class. But did you know UEA is also basically the centre for the study of climate change (Google their Climatic Research unit). Produces excellent historians and all manner of other disciplines. All I know about Cardiff is that three young people I know dropped out because Cardiff let them in on reduced grades, and they dropped out, lowing thousands in fees. I expect there are similar cases at UEA. But it's an excellent university in many areas, just as, I'm sure Cardiff is. Honestly, please don't spout lazy, uninformed advice.
