Nearly filled up the old one...

@CinnamonJellyBeans

"All lives matter" is actually racist though.
agreed.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2021 12:22

I think this is probably not a good thread to start this discussion in Snap. It's a conversation that will probably tear our helpful little group apart,

CinnamonJellyBeans · 28/03/2021 12:23

I haven't had any indication that from DD1 (C) that free speech is suppressed. Maybe because there has not been little opportunity for debate or organised protest.

However, from what she has told me so far about the class/race/gender roles and expectations, she'd be wasting her time. I reckon she's smart enough to know that.

She's not into that soap-box stuff anyway. Universities are full of posers who can "talk the talk". She's the kid who keeps schtum while everyone else is yakking and steps in to help when no one else wants to "walk the walk"

SnapSnapDragon · 28/03/2021 12:27

Cinnamon, that's a good example. I think you're right and from what I've observed most people would agree with you (but not all, interestingly), but I worry that at universities these discussions are not taking place because people get shot down immediately and discourse is at an end.

SnapSnapDragon · 28/03/2021 12:28

Sorry, I don't want to tear our group apart :)

Please forgive me!!!

Unescorted · 28/03/2021 12:32

All Lives Matter and Not all Men are 2 examples of drowning out the people who are pointing out the inequality. At no point was the original message Only Black Lives Matter or All Men Are Sex Predators. But by using ALM and NAM as a defensive rebuttal it casts doubt on the original message of those that are repressed.

Don't worry, you're forgiven! I think it's an age old debate at the universities and not just Oxbridge either. There's a reason why one of the marks of a really oppressed society is the persecution of those who work in education. And help! What have I done to my ipad keyboard? It seems to have suddenly switched to right justification and won't let me remove this spare word--->oppressed
OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2021 12:51

Oh that was weird! It posted looking quite normally and it's fixed now.
Might be something to do with the rogue ! that escaped.

DS has received his termly report which is quite useful in terms of feedback and also to guide him as to what subjects to study next year. Maths is his strongest subject at the moment, then Physics and Materials. Chemistry is slightly lower both in terms of grades and also DS's level of interest in the subject.

SnapSnapDragon · 28/03/2021 13:23

Glad the feedback was useful Ironoaks. Sounds like he has a good direction for choosing next year's options. DS is lacking feedback: he knows the marks but hasn't received his papers back from his collections which is a bit frustrating.

Unescorted I love the way you articulated that, I might borrow it :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2021 13:45

That's really helpful information for your ds Ironoaks.

Unescorted · 28/03/2021 14:30

The term report was good here too - "exquisitely beautiful" apparently.

snap practice. I am the gobby one down the pub in a very traditional and pale part of the country. My internet version of me is less confrontational.

mutterphore · 28/03/2021 16:15

DS1(C) perhaps inevitably - still hasn't had his termly report. As it took a whole term later to get all his essays back from the term before and his first term report didn't happen until well after Christmas, he's not holding his breath for this term's report.

DS2(O) on the other hand, got his termly report by the end of the final week of term and was very happy with this.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2021 16:24

I have to confess dd doesn't talk about her reports.

Unescorted · 28/03/2021 16:30

OYBBK - DD whips hers out for any new audience. If it was less fawning I suspect we wouldn't even know it was a thing.

Mutter I thought things had improved for him or did it not last?

mutterphore · 28/03/2021 17:34

Unescorted, I may be exaggerating and it's possible that his term report could be out soon. However, one of the contributors is the one who 'has form' for being very relaxed about marking /doing things on time, so the other, much more prompt supervisor may find his report delayed whilst waiting for the other to complete theirs. It's kind of a family joke now though that DS1's very relaxed attitude to life and work has been hugely enhanced by his DOS's similar stance!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2021 17:39

That's funny Unescorted Grin Good for your dd!

Unescorted · 28/03/2021 18:28

Ahh Ok Mutter I thought things had slipped to the bad ole days in their entirety.

SnapSnapDragon · 28/03/2021 20:00

Just the words "exquisitely beautiful" are giving me a warm glow. If only this were not an open forum, I'd love to have a peek.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2021 21:22

It's the boat race next weekend. Grin It will be on the Great Ouse, rather than the Thames.

lazyboysmum · 28/03/2021 23:27

Another basic question for you helpful parents... can I ask what devices your kids took to uni? DS has a gaming PC (which he doesn't know whether to take with him) and was thinking of asking for an iPad for his birthday which he plans to use with an Apple pen to take notes in lectures. He thought that would be more useful than a laptop because he can then draw diagrams in lectures- he will be doing science at uni.
What devices have yours taken and did they take PS4s and Xboxes with them too?
Thank you!

SnapSnapDragon · 29/03/2021 00:05

My DS is a scientist too. He took an ipad and an Apple laptop (chosen against my advice to go with a PC) and he bought an Apple pen, which he really likes. He uses his laptop to watch lectures and I think he uses his ipad to annotate notes. He definitely didn't bring a gaming PC (not a gamer and rather bemused by the number of people who are).

CinnamonJellyBeans · 29/03/2021 00:07

hahahahahaha PS4 hahahahahahah

Mine's currently sat in one of the study rooms and I quote: "This is not how I imagined uni life" (I'told her that she's surrounded by opulence, so stop complaining)

DH got her a macbook, which she can't use properly. We often get panicked phone calls about stuff disappearing and refusing to save. She also has a printer in her room.

I'd be surprised if your son gets much time to use his PS4. On a more serious note, he should probably think about doing leisure activities outside of his room.

SnapSnapDragon · 29/03/2021 00:08

Oh, and I should add, he also uses his laptop to write essays.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 29/03/2021 00:09

I'm very bossy and won't be offended if you disagree.
