4 years since A Levels and the wait for August and confirmation of where our chicks were about to fly the nest to.
It's been 4 years that has sprung a few surprises along the way, not least this lovely series of threads.

Dd has done 2 of 3 exams and was pleased that an essay which is 25% of the total got a good mark. No actual graduation here but she has agreed I can hire the gown/hood for photos - I'm paying Hmm

So only 1 exam to go and she'll be finished which is amazing. The firm where she was supposed to do work experience last summer have her pencilled in for August all Covid dependent but fingers crossed.

Lovely to hear of all the other plans - hope everyone continues to flourish.

Malbecfan · 10/05/2021 16:58

Gosh, lots of final exams happening. DD's aren't until the start of June. @ErrolTheDragon I'd better get on with sorting a hotel for graduation as DD has been told that we can go to her college and watch it on a big screen then they will do something in their gardens.

DD has sorted out a house for next year. She could stay in college but is fed up of the not ideal cooking facilities in a Cambridge gyp and would rather have a proper oven and freezer. She has teamed up with her very good friend who is doing a PGCE, a vet and 2 medics and they have found a house for which I only need to guarantee DD's share.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2021 17:22

DH reckons from the hotel price that quite a lot of parents are booking those dates, Malbec! It's quite noticeable - we nearly always use the holiday inn, which is coincidentally also where I stay on my very occasional visits to my company office on the science park. The prices when there isn't some uni related happening are generally significantly lower, unsurprisingly.

Xenia · 10/05/2021 17:59

( I got my £600 refund for the hotel for the twins' Bristol graduations fully refunded last year which was lucky although sad they will never have a graduation ceremony)

One did a London job application today (law next year) fingers crossed although there are so many application per place for these things chances are low...

Carriemac · 10/05/2021 18:43

I'd love a graduation trip 😞 three DCs finishing this year and no sign of a graduation for anyone

readsalotgirl63 · 10/05/2021 19:28

@Carriemac - I agree it's so sad. Although we're arranging to visit dd and celebrate I'm really disappointed she won't have a proper graduation after all her hard work.

Parker231 · 10/05/2021 19:45

DT’s graduations in respect of last summer and this have been moved to summer 2022. Both DT’s will be working overseas then and hopefully DH and I will have completed our move to Canada. Neither DT’s are interested in travelling back to the U.K. for the graduation ceremony. They have both said; we’ve graduated, got jobs, move on. I think if there had been one this summer, I would have enjoyed it more than either of them.

Malbecfan · 14/05/2021 17:05

I have also posted this on the O&C parents board so apologies if you have already seen it.

Lovely people, I need your advice. DD has just messaged to ask whether or not to have her middle names on her degree certificate. I know she still has exams to go but whatever happens in them, she is a BA(Hons) already - this is her Masters year, so we aren't jinxing anything I hope!

So wise MNers, middle name(s) or not? DD's 1st name is only 5 letters, surname 6. 2 middle names 7 & 5 so should be ok for space.
Thank you as ever.

Parker231 · 14/05/2021 17:19

DT’s have included their middle name (important to us all as their middle names are family names). They both have quite long first names and a long double barrelled surname but they still managed to fit their middle name on the certificate.

Haffdonga · 14/05/2021 18:29

I left my middle names off my own certificates (because I've been lumbered with multiple fairly long old-fashioned middle names - thanks parents Hmm ).

DS 1 and 2 have a first name and middle name from mine and dh's languages. Our surnames follow the same pattern so they usually keep their middle names in on exam certs. That also helps with matching id docs too.

Haffdonga · 14/05/2021 18:32

An no mention of a graduation here either. I'm starting to think I'll never go to one despite having 2 ds with masters degrees (nearly).

latedecember1963 · 14/05/2021 19:06

I think having middle names on the certificate is a nice touch and makes it more formal somehow.

I would say it is legally very very important to put the full name exactly as on passport/birth cert otherwise all kinds of problems could later flow from that. Employers often ask to see the certs and will also require to see passports etc - also much less likely you will be muddled with someone else if you don't have your full name on it.

Xenia · 14/05/2021 19:34

Mine are all fine. one had a bad zoom interview yesterday but at least it was practice (and his sister had one and got an offer the same day - she wants a 2 day a week job to run alongside her own practice - not sure if she will accept it or not). The other in Bristol was waking up at 5pm !!! when he called me as they had got to bed at 5am and he slept 12 hours - he was very surprised anyone can actually sleep for 12 hours.

JBX2013 · 14/05/2021 20:03

Hi @Malbecfan! May I ask which college?

My daughter (MPhil Year now), and all except one of her friends in Cambridge, are currently in College Graduate Accommodation, old or new, at various colleges, all with good facilities. All like to cook.

Malbecfan · 15/05/2021 09:29

@JBX2013 I will PM you.

Xenia · 15/05/2021 12:25

This should have said "much MORE likely you will be muddled with someone else if you don't have your full name on it".

Eve · 26/05/2021 21:27

Graduation being organised here for late July as last years grads also having a ceremony, will he held in a marquee in the Uni grounds.

Finals in full flow and finish mid June and then a year of parties will happen in the last 2 weeks of term. I ordered graduation cake today!

The dreaded dissertation was handed in and marked at 71% which I was delighted about as he worked so hard for it.

In job front his start date has been deferred to Sept 2022 and a euramus traineeship at Uni in Naples & then Bologna has been offered. The benefit of dual citizenship!

Can’t believe 4 years have gone by since I dropped of the anxious fresher!

SMaCM · 26/05/2021 21:33

DD and her uni dance group got together today to record their dance, which they've been practicing on Zoom since September. She was so happy about it. Her jobs are going well and she's being offered extra shifts, which is great. She had her 2nd vaccine today, which is a relief.

Good luck to all of you still getting them through the studying.

Parker231 · 26/05/2021 21:43

Congratulations to your DC @Eve. Bologna is one of my favourite cities. A good excuse for you to visit!

SMaCM · 27/05/2021 09:35

Naples sounds like somewhere I'd enjoy spending some time. I think I'll add it to my holiday list.

Malbecfan · 27/05/2021 09:41

@Eve that sounds amazing. @SMaCM blimey, I'm still waiting for my 2nd vaccine, but expected to teach face-to-face without any face-coverings (even though loads of the secondary kids are still wearing them). The DDs are nowhere near being called. Your lucky DD!

hellsbells99 · 27/05/2021 12:15

Glad to hear everyone is getting on okay.
We have just heard that Leeds Uni are postponing graduation until next year - this is for DD2 who finished last year. Quite sad about this as I am not sure she will want to bother 2 years after her degree finished. On a positive note, DD’s job is going okay and she is keeping busy and enjoying being able to go out again with ones who started with her at work.

Parker231 · 27/05/2021 12:50

DT’s also have their graduation from last year postponed until next year. Neither will be in the U.K. then and aren’t interested in coming back for it.

Eve · 27/05/2021 15:30

that's such a shame Graduations are being postponed .

both DS's are at Loughborough and as a uni they have been great this year compared to a lot of stories from the others.

They have a week of ceremonies for last years grads and then a week for this year with each ceremony having a drinks reception in marguees in the grounds afterwards. Only annoying thing is 2 tickets only and no spares.
