DS is at a non RG uni, and After this year of covid stop / starting / isolating at uni plus the fact the DS got much better A’level results than he was predicted . I feel he should reapply to a RG uni to re start he uni course of economics this September . Aibu to feel like this ,,?

i have spoken to DS about this possible option , but he says he wants to stay where he is ,,,

I know I really need to stop dwelling on this option but it’s hard when 1st years have had such a tricky start to their uni life ....

BTW , i know i probably ABU :)

@twelly

Absolutely agree it is the student’s choice that does not mean dismissing the idea of changing course and university without even a discussion if the pros and cons.
If a student is unhappy with their course or subject then the student should discuss changing their course but this needs to be driven by the students themselves not their parents - especially at HE level.

Changing course is very different to what the OP was suggesting. They want their(adult) child to move to a 'better' university because they thinks it's a better option despite the adult at university not wanting to move. Thankfully that's not their decision to make.

You then declared that moving university to repeat a year and therefore incurring an additional year of student finance was an excellent idea because it's been a disruptive year for first years overall and across the sector- which is terrible advice!!

But the student in question doesn't want to change course or university!!

People giving shit careers advice and claiming they're qualified to give said advice really makes me angry.

It gives the sector a bad name.

@JunoTurner

I do know Newcastle is RG. That’s why I said he should stay put if it’s Newcastle! I cannot see how anyone would think I didn’t know the difference between Newcastle and the other universities in the area

Nice try at backtracking @PresentingPercy Wink

if you knew it was RG why would you assume he was at Newcastle when the OP said he’s not at a RG university? Or why didn’t you ask her if she mistakenly thought it wasn’t? Or why didn’t you specify he should stay where he was “because it’s a RG university”?

As for @twelly ‘s advice to move because this year was so disrupted - well on that reasoning that advice could apply to all 1st years as they all had disrupted-by-Covid years. If even 25% try and restart elsewhere it’ll be carnage.

But bottom line, the young man doesn’t want to move. So a lot of this advice is redundant - it would be relevant if the OP was doing the degree, but she’s not.

I read it that she/he knew it was an RG uni as the way it was written made it perfectly clear to me that she/he was saying obviously stay if it is Newcastle (because it is RG). You may have read it differently but I didn't so stop trying to insist that you know what was meant when you have been told that you are wrong for goodness sakes
withmycoffee · 11/02/2021 17:30

@Jackie2022

Most RG unis have strict requirements for 2nd year direct entry though. For the most part the course structure has to be similar across both unis for first year
For goodness sakes. ALL universities have strict requirements for sentinel year entry. Not just flipping RG unis
Jackie2022 · 11/02/2021 17:39

@withmycoffee what is wrong with you? I didn’t say “all universities” as it isn’t pertinent to the OP, it’s not a put down. Grow up.

twelly · 11/02/2021 17:45

Advice can be different

TheJerkStore · 11/02/2021 17:49

@twelly

Advice can be different
Are you still claiming to be a qualified careers adviser?? And standing by the advice you gave earlier??

Advice should be tailored to the client- client being the operative word here.

Huh?

JunoTurner · 11/02/2021 18:01

@withmycoffee that doesn’t make sense. As the OP’s whole thing is that her son isn’t at a RG university, you’d think anyone who thought he was at Newcastle (Xenia & Percy) and who was also paying attention would have pointed out her mistake. Just like posters including you did about Loughborough not being RG.

If Percy & Xenia are right in their assumption and the OP’s DC is at Newcastle, then this thread is even more ridiculous then it first seemed.

Is a aggressive response from you. Not quite sure why you’ve got your knickers in a twist. Very weird.

You are being very persistent. Please, back off and calm down. You seem to be extraordinarily triggered by me and I have no idea why. Maybe Covid lockdown has been stressing you but you need to learn to manage yourself. Now please go away and leave me alone.
