Really boring question but have any of your DC used the bikepool cycle rental scheme? DS wants a bike to get from his halls to the sports centre - not far, but a faff walking. And I guess to the halls further out.

I've just popped by our local bike shop and can get him a good second-hand one for £180 and take it up when we go in half term. Or he can rent one for about £70. Both have a distinct possiblity of getting lost or stolen...

My DC had their bike during 1st year as the residence hall was out there. There was a huge bike shed that was very secure. Bike wasn’t lost, stolen or messed with. They didn’t take it after 1st year because felt that much of term time it was too icy and snowy to cycle safely and it was a bit of a faff if you say run into friends at the sports centre or library and then want to go out together straight after. You then have to make your way back to retrieve said bike.

Valleyofthedollymix · 26/09/2022 10:22

Thanks for that, really useful to know about the bikes. We went ahead and bought this cheap bike for him and we're driving up in a month so will take it then. I hadn't thought about the ice - softy southerner that I am.

Of course these rankings are to be treated with scepticism. That said, it's always nice to be at the top of them! DS feels quite jammy to have inadvertently ended up somewhere so prestigious and is so far finding the work easy as a bonus.

@Valleyofthedollymix
Yes the 1st year is low pressure. Your grades do not even count towards the class of degree you get. I think because it’s a 4yr course instead of 3yr they really do give the students the 1st year to consolidate their foundation learning and get used to life that is more independent than at home. It was invaluable for my DC (3rd yr) as they have has SEN. As far as the SEN people at St As go, my DC is very happy with the support from them and from tutors/professors as well.

Yes, I asked DS if he was watching and he asked why he would want to see St Andrews on TV when he can go out and see it for real! 😂

Ha yes! They can see it in the daylight 😂

@Newgirls I hear she is very excited about the concept of Stoxbridge!

Newgirls · 26/09/2022 12:30

St Oxbridge might be easier?!

OP posts:
Monkey2001 · 26/09/2022 13:24

I don't know, Stoxbridge has a festival sound, Woodstock meets Bridgwater, so nothing too modern!

Newgirls · 26/09/2022 13:45

Yes good point!

DD bought train tickets home for the October study break. I’m not sure if this is typical for students or not. I know last weekend was a bore for her two roommates went home for the weekend, and one had her family visiting. So she ended up mostly on her own. I think she’s not keen to spend a week like that.

Newgirls · 28/09/2022 13:45

Is that first year stockpot?

I think reading week is also raisin week and lots is going on. Though many do go away and take the rare chance to visit family etc or travel.

over the years your student might get busier. Or still want to visit which is also lovely.

Yes, she is a first year. She lives in halls on the edge of town so hasn’t had much time to make connections beyond her roommates yet.
She is staying for Monday and coming home Tuesday. I hope she won’t miss out on too much. You can’t make friends, if you don’t get out there and participate!

Newgirls · 28/09/2022 17:35

It’s a massive life change so maybe a bit of home time and she will be raring to go back. Perfectly normal I think. Ours is popping back too. Else it’s a long time til term end in Dec.

EachandEveryone · 28/09/2022 18:26

Ah thanks, I thought Karen Pirie was the author or actor! I will have a look.

Newgirls · 28/09/2022 21:02

I think Val McDermid wrote the novels this is based on. KP is the main character.

i should try and find the next episode

@Stockpot I hope your DD's train is not too early on Tuesday - alcohol seems to underpin Raisin in a big way! I agree that a lot will leave St A after Raisin for a few days. My DS will go to visit his GF in Sheffield as it is very hard to visit her any other time with the medic timetable. I don't think we expect to see him.

Reusername · 11/10/2022 09:22

@Stockpot DS is coming home too on Tuesday. He is flying down until Sunday a bit under duress but I think he will enjoy some home cooked food and washing!

Stockpot · 11/10/2022 09:36

DD is really looking forward to coming home. She wants to be taken care of and to visit with her best friend at Cambridge.

She is taking the train. We can’t wait to see her!

She seems to be really enjoying her classes, we hear snippets from her about her lectures. It’s wonderful that she is getting try different subjects out the first two years. It suits her and it’s something she would not have had at English universities. She’s turning out to be more introverted than she thought, turning down parties and nights out because she prefers to read. She’s starting to get acquainted with a few other students in each of her subjects, so all going well.

EachandEveryone · 11/10/2022 09:41

My nieces ceiling collapsed onto her bed luckily she wasnt in it at 3am as she was “srudying”😃 wont be coming home the train is nearly £200! And her American flatmates are all staying. Shes loving life but the food hasnt improved!
