Medicine 2022 entry - How difficult is it really? *title edited by MNHQ at OP's request*

I couldn't find a thread for 2022 entrants to medicine - maybe I didn't look hard enough! DD is in Year 12 and has wanted to do medicine since Year 10. It's only this year that we realise the enormity of actually getting a place. Not only do you have to have brilliant grades, you must also have done work experience, volunteered (both difficult in the current situation), got excellent BMAT/UCAT scores. Oh, and you also must have cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for charity or climbed Kilimanjaro or won the Nobel Peace prize or found a cure for cancer (joking about the last two). How competitive is it REALLY? I'm not sure about the value of the last apart from being used as a selection tool as the unis get so many qualified applicants - and showing enterprise and drive. Apparently this sort of thing is even more important this year as getting work experience is very hard this year. How does climbing a mountain make you a better doctor anyway? And what can normal students do to improve their chances of success??

Holborn was a nightmare driving and parking last summer. DS's friend did it and almost missed start time.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 01/08/2021 17:32

@KingscoteStaff - I'd leave nothing to chance with the traffic and take the tube. Parking will be difficult and hideously expensive in the Holborn area and the traffic is so unpredictable!

@SandyBayley - his theory test is on Sunday so you'll be there before us. Also, as DS has successfully navigated his way around Central America during his gap yah, I've told him he should take himself to Mile End! He seems to think Mile End is a scarier place than El Salvador. BTW it's dead easy to find a cancellation driving test on the official website if you've got your own car and can travel to any test centre. Just search over a broad range of test centres and be ready to pounce when a cancellation comes up.... and they do every few minutes. You just need to keep refreshing...

MarchingFrogs · 01/08/2021 23:38

Re Holborn, Thursday - tube strike...

Commencing from 12:00 (noon) on 5.8.21 until 11.59 on 6.8.21
(The first strike has been called for Tuesday 3rd).

www.intelligenttransport.com/transport-news/127053/london-underground-strikes/

Talks to take place tomorrow (2nd).

KingscoteStaff · 02/08/2021 07:23

Maybe Santander Bikes are a better idea…

SandyBayley · 02/08/2021 08:22

@KingscoteStaff - you could just get the train to Waterloo and get the bus. Or walk from Waterloo. Nice walk to clear the head?

KingscoteStaff · 02/08/2021 08:25

That's a good idea.

Monkey2001 · 02/08/2021 08:51

Urghh @KingscoteStaff, travel angst is the last thing you need! Just glancing through test centres, lots of availability in Aldershot on Friday if you wanted to give London a miss, depending on where you live.

KingscoteStaff · 02/08/2021 09:00

Apparently I am fussing unnecessarily and any competent 17 year old is perfectly capable of WALKING to Holborn from SW London if needed, thank you very much.

And can I please pay for the 2 bikini tops in her ASOS basket.

SandyBayley · 02/08/2021 09:22

In her defence @KingscoteStaff that would be possible! DH has done that before now and I've been known to run home to SW London from that area. What is it with the bikini tops? DD made me buy her two on Saturday for our upcoming holiday...

MarchingFrogs · 02/08/2021 21:06

This week's strikes (at least) called off.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 03/08/2021 17:31

DD's driving test has been cancelled with 24 hours notice as the tester was unavailable. Assume he/she was pinged. She's surprisingly chilled about it - almost in a zen like state since doing her UCAT....

I've heard some v poor students have had their UCAT test postponed for the same reason. Now that would have sent DD over the edge!

Monkey2001 · 03/08/2021 23:11

It is all so rubbish for our poor kids!

Monkey2001 · 05/08/2021 12:44

@KingscoteStaff hope your DD is having a good journey to Holborn, 🤞🤞 for a result she is happy with.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 05/08/2021 15:56

I've been thinking of your DD @KingscoteStaff.. she'll be nearly finished now..hope it went well!

KingscoteStaff · 05/08/2021 16:14

She’s out, with a really good score and band!

Slightly lower than her practice average on Verbal, but higher on the others.

We had 45 minutes calm walking round the Brit Mus, which helped steady the nerves.

Monkey2001 · 05/08/2021 16:26

Phew, well done @KingscoteStaff DD! Hope she can now enjoy a holiday!

SandyBayley · 05/08/2021 17:41

Hurray! So pleased @KingscoteStaff .

Are we the next 'victim' with an 8.30am slot on Saturday?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 05/08/2021 18:56

Great news @KingscoteStaff.

#PartyTime!

DD is still no closer to making a decision on which unis to apply to... Exeter and Birmingham are definites - but she needs 2 more. Decisions decisions!

mumsneedwine · 05/08/2021 20:58

FYI

apps.ankiweb.net

Might mean more places for next year too 😊

mumsneedwine · 05/08/2021 20:59

Sorry. Wrong link (that one is v useful for revision !)

www.gov.uk/government/news/extra-places-on-medical-and-dentistry-courses-for-2021

KingscoteStaff · 05/08/2021 22:11

I wonder if that will mean that Exeter rescinds their ‘have a year off and we’ll pay your accomm bill’ offer?

mumsneedwine · 05/08/2021 22:16

@KingscoteStaff doubt it. Exeter know what their offer holders have as most are gap years (they prioritised awarded grades). But Unis got results yesterday so am v sure this is a reaction.

KingscoteStaff · 06/08/2021 18:36

@SandyBayley good luck to your girl for tomorrow morning!!

SandyBayley · 06/08/2021 18:51

Ah thanks @KingscoteStaff she's wobbled a bit today after a dip in marks but has baked brownies so all is well.

Monkey2001 · 06/08/2021 19:07

Yes, good luck @SandyBayley, she may know that TSR have said that the latter Medify mocks are super hard and not representative. If she had not finished doing mocks, official UCAT mocks C and D are the best to use, but really she should have stopped now.
