Starting a new one as we filled it up!

Can't believe DS1 will be home in 2 weeks. Must remember to adjust the Ocado shop for when he's back. I suspect we may end up with a few days of his favourite meals 😊

That’s an interesting and unwelcome new corona-development iron and fly. I just read the document too, with a sinking feeling. This term has been far from optimal for many students and I was really hoping things might improve, but it doesn’t look like it. If Oxford and Cambridge follow this guidance there will be some students missing for nearly half of next term! I wonder if it will just be medics and scientists on site for the first few weeks? What a strange atmosphere that would be.

I am looking forward to seeing DS at the weekend and I think he’s looking forward to coming home. He has had a fantastic time at O so far, but has been working and playing very hard and needs a rest.

PantTwizzler · 02/12/2020 23:29

Thanks for the good wishes re DS... and thanks for the updates iron and fly. I had not spotted this and, I suspect, neither has DD, who will be very unhappy about not going back on time, not least because she has Mods at the end of next term and will by then be in full panic mode about how unprepared she is.

By the sounds of things, DS will be permitted to return to his expensive prison cell by virtue of his lab work -- the only in-person teaching he gets. (Actually I think prisoners are probably treated better in terms of cooked food, and access to recreation. OK OK I'm exaggerating.)

HuaShan · 03/12/2020 06:31

DS coming home tomorrow and was planning to go back on 11 Jan but guidance looks like Maths will be one of thd last to go back Confused. I doubt he has seen guidance, his household had their takeaway Christmas dinner last night.
I have just recieved a fantastic Matriculation photo of the whole college and did wonder if it was photoshopped! You would never know though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/12/2020 06:50

I am really really hoping they don't need to apply the guidance strictly. There were very few actual outbreaks across the two unis and their accommodation set up is very different from other places.

goodbyestranger · 03/12/2020 08:42

I've read the document too. What a load of bollocks. I hope Oxford simply ignores it.

goodbyestranger · 03/12/2020 08:47

And Cambridge.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/12/2020 08:48

It is a load of bollocks.

SnapSnapDragon · 03/12/2020 09:14

Am in total agreement with the "bollocks" sentiments.

DH picked up a text this morning, sent at 2.15am by DS asking him to cancel his cards because he has lost his wallet. DH phoned at 9am and pointed out that as DS is now an adult he has to do this himself. And apply for a new licence. And Bod card. I am hopeful it may find its way back to his college but DS suspects it was stolen from an unattended jacket. Life lessons..

JulesJules · 03/12/2020 09:31

Oh FFS, have just read the government plans for students returning in Jan. How ridiculous, it would mean some would only be there for 5 weeks. Why don't they just suggest they have a test before leaving home. Why are the students seen as such a big risk - many will be dropped off by parents. Meanwhile, shops and schools etc all open.

goodbyestranger · 03/12/2020 09:32

SnapSnapDragon Oxford students need to be careful esp around the central areas such as the Rad Cam. There's a highly organised pickpocket ring operating, has been for years.

goodbyestranger · 03/12/2020 09:35

Surely unis can say to the government stuff your plans? They just get increasingly stupid every time a minister opens its mouth.

hobbema · 03/12/2020 09:39

What fresh hell etc, constant meddling, tinkering, micro(Mis)managing. Bah humbug. Off to frantically paint the room we’ve been renovating since the girls left, mainly as their bedrooms full of lumber!

JulesJules · 03/12/2020 11:26

D1 texts that they've been told to arrive for Hilary 'as normal' haha

Crumpetstoday · 03/12/2020 11:45

@SnapSnapDragon Ds lost his wallet the other night whilst slightly the worse for wear. It was returned to hiM the next morning before he even realised it was missing. Handed into the porters lodge, cash and cards still inside. He was very grateful.

Ironoaks · 03/12/2020 11:54

A staggered start would mess with the "keeping term" rules. I suspect that C. would rather start the term in the normal way. The most recent results from the asymptomatic testing showed a low prevalence of cases.

mutterphore · 03/12/2020 20:06

DS2 (O) holds some 'positions of responsibility' at his uni. (he seems to have been 'gathering up' a few of these so far) and at a meeting today said that the senior members were speaking on behalf of the governing body about the government guidelines of a staggered return and are "pushing back vigorously against this". We won't know the outcome yet but it looked hopeful for a normal start date for O. Finger's crossed.

Meanwhile, Spuds and Dad, many thanks for expressing your disquiet too about DS1 at C. He and his cohort have had an email from their DOS to hint that essays should be returned 'fairly soon' and that they're 'working' on arrangements for next term's texts and supervisor. So at least that's something.

He also had a very short video meeting with his tutor today - I think lasting about 10 minutes. He had a similar brief meeting at the start of term. I'd suggested he raise the question of why his supervisions don't revolve around essays, that his essays still hadn't been marked and that he didn't have any idea of next term's work or preparation - but to say all of this in a 'curious, interested and motivated to progress' kind of way instead of accusatory.

Unfortunately, he felt there was no chance at all to raise any of this as his tutor is a young Mathematician and he thinks can't possibly know about essays and arts/humanities degrees. I'm not sure why they've given an English student to a Maths tutor but maybe that's common practice? It turned out to be a nice but bland affirmation that DS1 has no 'pastoral issues' of note and of course DS1 wouldn't feel it appropriate to mention the late night noise disturbance. So that was it.

DS1 is happy enough with everything and as his twin says, you've sort of got to educate yourself through a degree anyway. It does seem unfair though that DS2 is being guided and mentored more skillfully - in my opinion.

DS1 is going to a couple of 'events' tonight - one in college and one a university wide one where he's delighted to get his suit out of mothballs at last and hopes to meet some interesting people!

DS2 wears his suit every week for Chamber choir and had a brilliant carol concert in full regalia outside the other night. He has a household Formal Hall shortly and his tutorial feedback session plus several social events and has just completed his final essay with more affirming feedback.

By contrast (I love doing these contrasts as you've just got to laugh really!), the only 'music' on offer at DS1's college was a posse of drunken students singing loud Abba songs in the corridors at 3am. His recent college dinner (on the lovely plastic trays) would have contrasted badly with a greasy spoon motorway cafe and if he gets any feedback on his term's work at all, it'll probably be by email and well into the vac. with some bland comment like "everyone has won and all must have prizes"!

I may well be exaggerating of course.

I've just purchased some lovely college Matric. photos of DS2 and have told DS1 I'll take some of him myself when he gets home, as his Matric. at the start of term was a small glass of warm champagne in plastic cup with students shuffling around in hoodies and tracksuits, ignoring the non-event going on in the background.

Malbecfan · 03/12/2020 20:12

Thanks for the reminder here. Just read the government garbage on when they should go back. Both my DDs are scientists, so presumably both should go back as soon as they can. Just messaged them now to see which weekend they want. DD2 needs to go back the 2nd weekend, DD1 the third.

DD2 (neither O nor C) had a negative test today. Originally she was meant to come home in 2 weeks' time but labs are now finished so she wants to come home. So the plan is now (as long as DD1 in C gets a negative result from today's test): leave home at 6am on Saturday. Drive to C (>225 miles). Load car with DD1's stuff. Text DD2. Drive 1 hr 40 to DD2. DD1 & I load car with her stuff whilst she does her online class. That finishes at 2.30pm. 2.31 leave and drive home. A DD will do an online order for fish & chips from the car for DH to collect. The journey from DD2's should be around 3.5 hours. Hopefully not back too late but a 12 hour day at least. Good job I like my car and driving! A shame that neither DD is insured to drive it but it holds a lot more than their car, is more economical and more powerful. They can wait on me hand & foot on Sunday!

goodbyestranger · 03/12/2020 20:23

Krispies I hope Malbecfan. They didn't get their national award for nothing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/12/2020 20:29

Crumbs Malbec they better had look after you after all that!

DadDadDad · 03/12/2020 20:48

Here's one of the quirks of being in a very small college: DS got his end of term "report" on his academic progress and the way it is delivered is his director of studies reads it out in front of the Master!

I can't believe that the Master does this every term with every student, but it's clearly a way for him to meet all the first years. DS seems to have done well, developing his essay technique and being able to cope with the cut and thrust of tutorials. He even produced an essay when suffering with Covid.

I'm just so pleased that he has found a course and place that really suits him, or perhaps it's more that the right subject and college found him.

On top of that, he's sorted out accommodation for next year and is just about to sign a tenancy agreement with four fellow students for a house on the south side of the city. I'm signing as his guarantor .

hobbema · 03/12/2020 21:01

@mutterphore, DD1( atheist) is tutored by her Dean of college which cracked us all up. I don’t think the intention is to have a subject match , that’s the DoS’s role. It really is pastoral . That said I think they are also there to help with general study issues. DDs tutor went through her report with her for example. As always probably very college specific . That said I don’t see why a mathematician wouldn’t have a basic knowledge of what a humanities student does. Reminds me however of DD wondering what Engineers did for their degree “ do they just look a pictures of bridges and do case studies ?” I expect the bf has put her right. They can only help with issues they know about though...

hobbema · 03/12/2020 21:09

@DadDadDad, that is next level report carding!! Marvellous stuff, please say there was also drinking from an ancient vessel or similar? DD2 has just signed off for her 2nd year Oxford house too; they go quickly. 5 nurses, poor landlord.

DadDadDad · 03/12/2020 21:18

@hobbema - while consumption of alcohol seems to have featured strongly in DS's first term, I don't think there was any quaffing on this occasion. We were surprised the whole thing wasn't conducted in Latin Grin - DS would have been delighted if it had been.

PantTwizzler · 03/12/2020 21:38

When I was at a large Oxford college many moons ago, we had Dean’s Collections at the end of every term IIRC. Sadly no quaffing from ancient vessels was involved. (I did eat at high table once, though; there was a special dessert for some reason so we all trooped in to a separate small dining room for fruit etc. I remember being completely mindboggled that the Steward ate his grapes and banana with a knife and fork.)

Unescorted · 03/12/2020 21:40

2 more sleeps until she is back....

She got her report card today - not read out except to me and her dad as far as I know.

Dad3 I am glad we don't have to underwrite the private rented sector of Oxford. The rents look eye watering.
