Carrying on from our previous thread.

I believe these threads have probably been running since the summer/autumn of when our DC were about to start/in Year 13 (so 2018)?

my DS doesn't seem to have much academic work at all to do,

What subject is he studying? Is he keepng on top of his emails?

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 24/12/2020 14:22

My DD has had her exams for the term (they call them quarters where she is). She got 95+ in everything except one project, where she got 13%. She's a bit miffed :-)

She's also learnt the hard way not to leave big projects to the last minute. I guess that's a valuable life lesson, right?

bigTillyMint · 24/12/2020 14:32

Happy Christmas to all Xmas Smile

Not much studying going on here. Just hoping they can get back onto it next term Confused

Alicatz66 · 24/12/2020 17:16

Happy Christmas Backpackers !!! .. let's hope 2021 brings them all a bit more fun ! 🎄🎄🥂🥂

Xenia · 24/12/2020 17:28

Yes, it is very unfair on the young. I was vaccuuming today and was near the brand new iroing board and iron I bought for my son in February for here at home as he was often ironing smart shirts for lovely outings and dinners, has a dinner jacket etc and now everything is in hold. It has hardly been used. It seemed to sum it all up.

Ragwort · 24/12/2020 17:45

Gin, yes my DS is good at checking emails so I don't think he's neglecting any set work ... just doesn't seem to be given much to do (of course he could do a lot more reading round the subject ..... ). mine - I asked him and he has got exams after Christmas so I hope he does some revising.

Zandathepanda · 24/12/2020 19:13

Xenia I had forgotten my iron broke last February - until today when I tried to use it. Grin
My Dds would not be amused about being bought an ironing board and iron (though it would have been handy borrowing it back from them).
Everything just gets tumbled here normally.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 24/12/2020 20:37

Merry Christmas everyone.Xmas Wink. Wishing everyone as much good cheer as is possible.

DS did some work when he first came home but has downed tools for a well-deserved rest. He'll be going back in Norwich before we know it.

Happy Christmas lovely people!! Sorry for radio silence, expect to hear more from me once I'm off the dreaded Oxbridge 2021 thread.... multi tasking has never been one of my strengths. x

Ginfordinner · 24/12/2020 22:45

Merry Christmas all. You have all been such a good, supportive lot.

I hope 2021 is a better year for everyone.

Zandathepanda · 25/12/2020 00:23

Happy Christmas!!!
Just shouted at my lot to get to bed otherwise Santa isn’t coming! Dd2 told me if Santa has been to South Africa first we don’t want him in the house Grin so I said he’s working his way down the U.K. then Africa. The animals are now riled up and are being Santa’s little hindrances.
Hope everyone has a happy and healthy day. You have been so lovely to me as 2020 has been the worse year ever. Roll on 2021!

Shimy · 25/12/2020 18:39

Merry Xmas everyone!! hope everyone had a jolly good one.

Ragwort · 25/12/2020 21:57

Happy Christmas to you all, this is such a lovely supportive thread and I think of you all as friends Smile, hope everyone had a good day.

Benjispruce2 · 25/12/2020 23:42

Happy Christmas all! Hope you all had some joy. Was a lovely day and my best present was a negative Covid result via text at lunchtime after an end of term breakout at my school. Very grateful to lab staff churning results out on Christmas Day, giving me peace of mind. I will sleep well tonight, finally.

Zandathepanda · 26/12/2020 00:15

Benji yep that does sound like the best present! Hope Christmas Day wasn’t even more disrupted beforehand.
Everyone in bed and nearly all quiet so having a quick cup of tea in peace. I can hear Dd is chatting to her Uni mates and having a good laugh - thank goodness for technology but I think they’re still on Uni-time!

Piggyinblankets · 26/12/2020 08:27

Morning! Merry Christmas for yesterday!

Haven't posted for ages because nothing to say. DS got an Amazon Echo Dot and seems relatively pleased with it. We played Trivial Pursuit and he was surprisingly good at it for someone who seems never to read, watch the news, study... it's all that internet, I guess.

He is getting very anxious about whether he will be trapped at home forever with us but there seems to be radio silence on the uni situation. Lincoln, surprisingly is tier 3.We are tier 4 at home. Something of a role reversal.

Hope all are well!

Xenia · 26/12/2020 09:09

Don't worry the new ironing board is for my house, not my son's present and I got it earlier this year before CV19. The previous one was so old it had asbestos in which I think dates it back to the 1980s when we first came to London so we certainly needed a new one.

I agree with Piggy that the uncertainty is often the worst thing as people cannot plan or know what will happen. It is one reason my daughter ditched the Autumn 2021 wedding as they venues for meals were all saying if you book and pay for then and then restrictions prevent it then you can only move it over into 2022 (not get a refund nor even reduce your numbers to 15) so she could see it being pushed back year by year arguably until she is too old to have children ... so they are going for March come what may as long as weddings are allowed by then (currently they are illegal in London unless you are dying). Hopefully they may be back on by March for up to 15 people (or even 30).

Ginfordinner · 26/12/2020 09:26

Poor DD got another headache and crashed out for a couple of hours in the late afternoon, but she perked up after a nap and some paracetamol. Up until then, and after she perked up we have had a lovely day. The sun shone all day which always cheers everyone up.

I hope none of you have been affected by the bad weather and flooding. Makes a change for there not to be flooding in our region for once.

Piggyinblankets · 26/12/2020 09:32

Yes, flooding here. Not in my village but all around. Hospital under flood alert.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/12/2020 09:58

Merry Christmas everyone for yesterday. I tried to keep off my phone for the day.

There are quite a few floods round here. Several villages have suffered. Our house is higher up (if you can call any part of Suffolk higher up) so it's fine here.

Ds2 spoiled Christmas a bit. Having slept all week until 4pm he decided to get up at 7am Christmas morn. he showered, had breakfast. He watched ds's 1 and 3 open their stockings. Said he didn't want to open his. Then went up to his room...not to be seen again. I did call up to him to ask if he was joining in present opening. No. The rest of us opened presents. We decided it was best to just leave him.
I called him down for dinner 2pm. He'd been asleep and was so grumpy. He didn't want to eat as it was apparently a stupid time of day for dinner. He finally opened his presents in the evening. Though told us we couldn't have ours from him yet...they are still under the tree.

I shall wake him up shortly. He said he has a lot of work to do. I have no idea whether he will be going back to school 5th. I expect the school are waiting to see what the situation is in a week as we went in to tier 4 today.

Zandathepanda · 26/12/2020 12:28

Xenia that’s sad and frustrating about your DD’s wedding - sounds like she has a sensible plan though. 30 is a nice number for a wedding but 15 leaves difficult choices to make.

Icanbe what a pain teenagers can be. I think you did the right thing to keep the peace but you deserve an apology. I know it’s so difficult for pupils (is he in Yr13?) it seems ludicrous that exams can be objectively assessed this year. I would be opening the presents carefully to understand why he doesn’t want you to open them!
Piggy fingers crossed for no more rain. It got a little close a few days ago for our neighbours. We are ok too.

I hope all teachers particularly had a good break. Dds school had lots of staff and pupils getting it in the last 2 weeks so we had fingers crossed until Christmas Eve for the dreaded phone call from school if we had to isolate. As it was we drove to see my mum in her open garage which she’d done up like a grotto and had our chairs to her chair 4m apart. We shouted to each other and had a table in between with hand sanitiser, paper cups and a hot soup starter. She’s made lots of food so we could bring it all home and get the main course at the table here. She makes such a thing of Christmas as normal. Uni Dd Is taking after her fortunately so I am off the hook Grin.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/12/2020 13:17

@Zandathepanda Ds2 is year 12. Ds1 and 3 seemed to enjoy Christmas Day. I think Ds1 is looking forward to going back to his house in Norwich. He's enjoying raiding the fridge and having his food cooked the most while he's home.

Zandathepanda · 26/12/2020 13:56

Icanbe ah yes Dd2 in Year 12 but going back a week late - I think that first week everyone is online except Yr11 and Yr13 at secondary. I think that is the same for all ‘state’ schools?
Dd1 has no reason to go back until before February but probably will if allowed. Both Uni and home in tier 3. No idea what tier you have to be in before you can’t travel back to Uni if Uni is online only.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/12/2020 13:56

The previous one was so old it had asbestos in which I think dates it back to the 1980s when we first came to London so we certainly needed a new one. @Xenia I'm shocked that such a recently made ironing board would have had asbestos in it. Sure by the 80s it was known to be totally toxic and a real risk to lung health. Having said that though, DM had one that dated back to the 60s which we were probably still using well into the 90s.Grim isn't it?

@Piggyinblankets lover your festive username!

It is difficult for them to plan. DS is determined to go back next week Would be travelling Tier 4 to Tier 4 so hopefully not an issue as it would be trying to move from a higher to a lower tier area. Who knows though?

Sorry to hear about the flooding. A recent Panorama programme seemed to suggest that it's going to get worse with climate change. Xmas Sad.

@icanbewhatiwant it's amazing how easily teens can turn into gremlins if they're tired. We had a huge furore this morning (aside from the cat calamity) because DD had lost one of her more expensive earrings which she' not put away properly and dropped on the bedroom carpet. So much lumping and bumping around to find one minute stud Xmas Hmm.

@Zandathepanda glad to hear that you managed to see your mum and have a different type of festive feast. How is your DD2?

icanbewhatiwant · 26/12/2020 14:26

Tier 4 to tier 4 here. But it is our nearest university. So not far to travel.
@Zandathepanda our secondary have not mentioned return at all. I expect they are waiting on the situation. 10 days yet until they were due to go back.
