Dd's had the standard tv licensing letter - we don't think it applies as she meets the criteria for not having one according to the tvlicensing page . Anyone else?

Yes my daughter had one. She went online and declared why she didn't need one. We're hoping that's the end of it now. As far as we can see as she only watches on devices not plugged in she is covered by our home licence.
LIZS · 01/10/2020 19:35

@SnozzlemaidThat was what we believe too.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 01/10/2020 19:41

So dd and her flat mates are working out what they’d need to survive 14 days isolating, which they think is likely to happen sooner rather than later. I suggested doing laundry regularly, buying non-perishable food.

DD has asked if I can send her the Wii and Just Dance Grin. Priorities.

choirmumoftwo · 01/10/2020 20:32

If DC watch any TV on any device plugged into the mains, they need a TV license. Are you all saying your DC won't be watching and charging at the same time?

LIZS · 01/10/2020 20:34

Dd insists not.

sammyjoanne · 01/10/2020 21:04

www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ99
You don’t need a TV Licence if you never watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel, or live on an online TV service, and you never download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand.

This applies to any provider or device you use, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or Blu-ray/DVD/VHS recorder.

sammyjoanne · 01/10/2020 21:07

So as above: To not pay the TV fee, the way im reading it is she can watch online corrie and emmerdale as they are on ITV, but not BBC.?

TheDrsDocMartens · 01/10/2020 21:16

Dd2 did a big shop today as there’s the expectation her halls will be locked down soon.

sammyjoanne · 01/10/2020 21:17

Sorry meant to clarify. she wants to watch corrie and emmerdale but on catch up on ITVhub, and it will not be live streaming. And just Netflix would be on demand/catch up. Im pretty sure thats valid enough not to get a licence i think.

sammyjoanne · 01/10/2020 21:22

@TheDrsDocMartens oh dear that sounds ominous. Hope that they dont, but good your Dd2 has the foresight to prepare :)

ShaunaTheSheep · 01/10/2020 23:02

As predicted DS flat is now self isolating after one of them tested positive.

Ironoaks · 02/10/2020 07:21

We dropped DS off yesterday. The room is nicer than I was expecting and lots of storage space.

Before we left, two other first years recognised him from zoom chats and called out to him in a friendly way. He managed to get dinner (catered) and someone from his household shared their home-baked cookies with him.

Today he plans to find the bus stop and do a practice bus journey to the labs (some of the practicals are in person rather than online). He doesn't find buses easy due to his ASD, so this will be a test run to see whether the bus is manageable; if not then he's happy to walk (cycling is not an option).

Sostenueto · 02/10/2020 08:02

Shaunathesheep sorry to hear this. But suspect there will lots that have to isolate. ☹️
Dgds flat decided together to try and be as careful as possible and not have parties in their flat or others coming in their flat but that is a hard ask for them as they are young and want fun and may not last long.

sammyjoanne · 02/10/2020 08:06

@Ironoaks glad your son is settling in. if you dont mind me asking what uni and course is he doing? You mentioned he has labs :) my daughter will be doing labs too.

sammyjoanne · 02/10/2020 08:09

@ShaunaTheSheep oh no thats not good news :( hope hes got lots of supplies x

ShaunaTheSheep · 02/10/2020 08:34

Last night the flatmates were jointly organising a Morrison’s/prime delivery for fresh stuff, and have a couple of Tesco delivery slots between them, so won’t starve. All boys so priorities are entertainment and food!
We are posting a package of paracetamol and ibuprofen today - I drove around several shops buying 2 packs at a time.

sammyjoanne · 02/10/2020 11:05

@ShaunaTheSheep good idea that they should club together like that. Think all of us parents at some point will have our DC isolating or catching it, so you've done good to stock up on medical stuff :)

Ironoaks · 02/10/2020 17:45

@sammyjoanne he is doing Natural Sciences at Cambridge, which includes three experimental science courses.

Chemistry: no lab space for 1st years this year, an online alternative will be provided
Physics: 50% of the practicals will be in person and 50% online
Materials Science: to be confirmed, but hopefully practicals in person.

Thankfully the physics and materials science labs are in the same part of the city. He had set aside today for familiarising himself with the route. He took the bus to the labs and then back to college. Then walked to the labs and then back to college. He got lost in both sections of both journeys, but kept trying and found his destination eventually.

LetUsPrey · 02/10/2020 19:57

Another Lancaster mum here. Took DS1 up a week last Monday - Cartmel College. He’s never really been much of a joiner-inner but seems to actually be spending time out of his room. Says his flat mates (there are eight of them in total) all seem nice and they all got the bus into Lancaster the other day to do some shopping. He’s even done a couple of loads of washing!

Hope any DC that are affected by lockdown conditions are okay.

geogteach · 02/10/2020 20:10

Shauna the sheep think it is very common in Leeds now. Another friend's son is now isolating as someone in their flat has it ( he tested negative ). My son only has to isolate until Monday now and hasn't been ill with it so looking forward to leaving his flat. Hopefully your DS will be ok too.

LIZS · 02/10/2020 20:18

@sammyjoanne I thnk dc are covered by parents' licence even for , as long as they meet the criteria listed

www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/for-your-home/students-aud1

LIZS · 02/10/2020 20:21

halls communal licence won’t cover your room. But you may be covered by your parents’ licence. If you think you are, please check that all of the following are true before telling us you don’t need one:
Your out-of-term address (parents’ address) is covered by a TV Licence
AND you only use TV receiving equipment that is powered solely by its own internal batteries
AND you have not connected it to an aerial or plugged it into the mains.

sammyjoanne · 02/10/2020 21:02

@Ironoaks thats great. my daughter friend goes to Cambridge. DD studies particle physics and cosmology. 1 lab per week, and i think tutorials are in person. Seminars and lectures are on line.

sammyjoanne · 02/10/2020 21:18

@LetUsPrey Hey nice to hear another from Lancaster :)
It's good hes getting out and about and joining in. DD having a night in tonight and catching up on corrie and emmerdale, having a facetime call tomorrow afternoon, so will catch up on everything shes done then.
She did do a wash and sent me a photo lol proving shes doing the 'adulting' lol
