If Dgd has to isolate at uni it won't be a big trial for her being as she had to be shielded mostly on her own everyday only seeing her mum when she got home from 12 hour shifts for almost 16 weeks. She never even went into their backyard. She survived that So she will survive a 2 week isolation. She had a phone she will have work to do she has sm she will cope.

Sostenueto · 24/09/2020 07:42

Further to terfterfterf post. Last year my Dgd caught an 'unknown' virus. No symptoms apart from excess tiredness. Unbeknown to anyone she had apparently been fighting virus for quite a while ( hospital reckoned weeks) till it sent her immune system into overdrive and it turned on herself killing all her platelets that vlot the blood. The only sign was when she woke up almost black with multiple bruised, bleeding from all orifices, blood blisters in and out if mouth and purple rash. She was rushed into hospital and was bleeding internally as well as near complete organ failure. She was in ICU and she had no platelets at all. She had developed ITP. There were some quite young children also in hospital with it but not as severe and usually it's a one off but in dgds case she had the adult version ( because she has had relapse and she was 17 when she got it) and it can occur at any time without warning. That is why she had to shield from begining of March till end of June as she had relapse in February having again caught an ' unknown' virus and was on immune suppresent drugs for all those months.

Because of this she follows to the tee all measures to keep herself safe and her flatmates are of same mind and all have agreed no parties in flat each being careful about social distance and they have all bonded very well. They socialise as a bubble are having fun as much as possible in fresher's week constrictions and the fact fresher's week is mainly all on line and she has fingers crossed all will be well. Uni us brill and email/ring her everyday regarding health and she already has specialist and doctors arranged by uni on her doorstep. So yes beware symptoms of various viruses and illnesses can be confusing. But above all everyone should try to keep safe.

We arrived early at accomodation but we're allowed in being as we were first slit anyway😁 excellent organisation by KCL trollies at door car outside door ( but only allowed 5 minutes to unload but had place booked at carpark round corner) unload straight in masks mandatory only one parent and parent allowed in room ( but not kitchen if flat) for 20 minutes which was enough time to make bed unpack suitcases and then we went out for shopping and breakfast. A doddle and all Covid safe.

@TerfTerfTerf

Thank you for that advice on automatically assuming it’s Covid.

I have shared to a Uni parents page I’m on.

sammyjoanne · 24/09/2020 09:04

@Sostenueto wow, im glad your daughter was ok that really must have been a scary time. My daughter and I had (we think one of the strains of the common coronavirus thats been around for decades (and doctors thought it was too)) last June, and never felt anything like it. We had to have the paramedics out for my daughter as she struggled to breath (shes 15) and she developed this rash. I couldnt go up the stairs because i'd get out of breath and have a coughing fit. It took about a month to finally feel normal. Not as serious as your daughter bless, but enough to learn a lesson that Covid-19 is scary and to always be careful.
Im glad your daughter though is in a flat of same mind and values in regards to covid, and the uni is in contact re her health. Its reassuring to know they are making sure she is ok :)

TerfTerfTerf · 24/09/2020 09:08

Sostenueto I have the platelet type that causes ITP in the foetus - my DS2 had the telltale rash and a low count when he was born but recovered quickly. It's one of the reasons I didn't have a third (I didn't know about it until DS2 and would have had to have an in-utero blood transfusion for a subsequent baby). I had no idea it could be a post-viral condition and it must have been terrifying for your DGD. So glad she's settled at KCL - I shall look at every female student-type when I walk around that area and assume she's one of them Grin

Sostenueto · 24/09/2020 09:13

sammyjoanne thanks. Yes very scary even second time round. She is down for a removal of spleen but this Covid makes that impossible for time being but she's managing well. It is a condition loads of people have though we had never heard about it before she got ut, it's just Covid bring around makes it really dangerous for her but she has to live her life and will be ok taking as much precautions as possible. Also am glad her flatmates are so great! She had been in contact with three of them on SM before going to uni which was really handy. ( On group chat for accomodation). And she has already met some on her course through another group chat on subject.
Glad both you and your dd have recovered and yes all the coronaviruses are nasty indeed! Take care keep safe enjoy life and much as possible while following advice! Xx

Sostenueto · 24/09/2020 09:20

Yes ITP very scary as there is no warning! So sorry to hear about your family☹️ and hope all are coping well. It's surprising how many people have condition and manage to lead a normal life. You never hear about it either. Apparently there were people who with Covid, and were young and fit having same problem of immune system turning on themselves. It proves that u can have an underlying conditions and not be even aware you have I suppose. She has survived almost a week very well and is enjoying KCL. Good luck to u and yr kin! Xx

Sostenueto · 24/09/2020 09:24

P.s to terfterfterf look in Oriental foodstores eateries and speciality teashops because they are her fads! One reason why London seduced her!

sammyjoanne · 24/09/2020 09:31

@Sostenueto thanks, and im glad your daughter is doing great :)

sammyjoanne · 24/09/2020 09:34

I wonder how @choirmumoftwo is getting on as it was moving day
today for county college :) hope everything is going ok :)

choirmumoftwo · 24/09/2020 10:11

Thanks @sammyjoanne. We're on the road now (move in slot 12-2) and preparing to get wet! Living in the north east we're hardy souls! Hope all is well with you.

choirmumoftwo · 24/09/2020 14:45

She's in! All very straightforward and well organised. Few tears from her and dad (!) which is natural but I know she'll be fine. And we dodged the rain!

sammyjoanne · 24/09/2020 17:11

Thats good to know @choirmumoftwo and glad you dodged the rain. It just started to rain again in Notts and last of daughters washing has had to come in. Hopefully Saturday will be ok weather wise. How was they with the strictness of moving in and the 1 person helping rule?

choirmumoftwo · 24/09/2020 17:22

Not strict at all, although we only went into the house one at a time.

billydilly · 24/09/2020 19:27

@geogteach @ShaunaTheSheep and any other Leeds peeps.

How are yours getting on? My Dd has clicked with her flat-mates and seems happy, doing lots of exploring around town with her new mates. She did say that sleep was difficult due to non-stop partying outside the building. The security people have sniffer dogs so add excited barking to the racket!

geogteach · 24/09/2020 20:47

Not a lot of communication from DS. But seems to get on with his flat mates and told his Dad he has done a 'big shop' today as he has heard there may be a case of COVID at his accommodation and was worried about having to isolate. He has also heard that someone from his year at school in the second year (he had a year out) has tested positive so it is obviously around.
On the noise front DS is profoundly deaf , once he takes his implants out he hears nothing ,so he is probably the only
One getting a good nights sleep!

LIZS · 24/09/2020 21:02

Dd is reporting that there is a case in another block so some are now isolating. Nicola has banned students from pubs this weekend, not sure how they will police it or if groups will just retreat indoors instead. Apparently Nicola's nephew is a fresher ....Favourite Auntie not!

Not just pubs, restaurants too. Not sure about coffee shops. I think we will see tougher restrictions around England too in the next few weeks. Sad

AChickenCalledDaal · 24/09/2020 21:19

This is the actual guidance in Scotland. Looks like they are trying to break the chain of infection by having a tough weekend. Hopefully just a short term measure ...

LIZS · 24/09/2020 21:44

Thanks for the link. What about those who cannot download the app?

Ironoaks · 24/09/2020 22:02

DS will be leaving next week. The accommodation is catered and if he has to self-isolate the college will deliver food to him. Even so, he's taking a small bag of non-perishable emergency food (the sort of thing where you just add hot water) just in case.

ClerkMaxwell · 24/09/2020 23:32

Does the Scottish student ban apply to those who students who work part time in hospitality? DD found a job and has a first shift on Saturday. She says that they are still keen to have her come in but she's not sure it's allowed.

Monkey2001 · 24/09/2020 23:45

@ClerkMaxwell the VC of St Andrews said jobs are unaffected and students with hospitality jobs should go to work.

Eve · 25/09/2020 06:34

DS is moving into self catering on Saturday- he got his room number yesterday and key pick up instructions.

1 person allowed to help which is me with a dodgy ankle, he’s on the 4th floor and we have 30mins to unpack the car and move him in. ShockHmm

I cant see this going well!
