A year where our kids really will have no clue as to what happens next!

That’s Cambridge, roses? DS is Oxford and they were a bit down in the dumps last week when they went into tier two. Of course, that’s all forgotten now as we will all be in a worse boat. Stressful time for us as DD is taking the ELAT on Wednesday, she has an Inset day tomorrow and school all day Tuesday so I am crossing everything that it goes ahead.

I’ve been so impressed with how our young people have coped with their changed circumstances, they’ve shown real maturity and consideration for each other. DS has some great friends who are an absolute credit to their families.

DS is not really thinking about next year he’s looking at various options rather tentatively , a lot of his friends are planning a gap year and I think that’s a fair option after this year.

HeyBells · 01/11/2020 21:09

Good luck for the ELAT Bake.

I saw DS during the week, he and his household seem to be coping well. He's a bit concerned that the workload seems easier but I think he was doing so much other stuff last year plus no labs this term and fewer supos so there is more time. Or he hasn't got the hang of more independent work in 3rd year yet...

DS has been "going" to some careers webinars. He doesn't really know what he wants to do and didn't manage to get an internship this year. It's looking most likely that he'll continue onto the integrated masters

OhTheRoses · 01/11/2020 21:15

DC are at Cambridge swimmer. I work for a different university.

Bakeandyarn · 02/11/2020 16:28

Thanks heybells, just tomorrow to get through!

That’s quite reassuring to hear re: workload, my DS says much the same (humanities subject here though). I think it’s probably that there is less going on in terms of sport etc which filled a big chunk of time before. DS has also done some careers webinars but is still a bit vague!

Sunndowne · 07/11/2020 21:44

Nice to hear all your DC are managing the covid disruptions. My DD is abroad and coping with current restrictions.

She is applying for summer internships in hope it'll lead to a contract/job for future. She's had a bit of an about turn on prospective careers. But as i've said, you'll take the job that comes up. My DS applied for 50 jobs a year ago, got 2 interviews and one really nice job that suits well. But that was just pre-covid. Fingers crossed for future.

A year out sounds good Bake, they've been on a treadmill since GCSE. Their educational route has been full on! My DD is enjoying a slower pace on her internships. Next year will be high paced again, I presume.

Also think a masters, especially in this climate is a good shout Heybells and Yale Roses: wow! Who knows Biden may get covid under control there and Faucci could deliver a vaccine!

Can't believe we've steered them through a good part of Oxbridge now. Hope covid doesn't spoil their special opportunity too much!

Hope ELAT went well. Have a niece and nephew applying too!

Bakeandyarn · 08/11/2020 16:21

Glad to hear your DD is enjoying her year abroad, covid has certainly added an extra challenge for our youngsters and they seem to be coping amazingly well. I also think a masters would be a good shout, DS isn’t keen but it buys them a bit more time in this climate.

It was relief to get the ELAT done, so much beyond our control this year which made it a more anxious experience. She has submitted her written work so now it’s just wait and see! What subjects are your niece and nephew applying for sunndowne?

Sunndowne · 08/11/2020 23:08

Comp sci and Geography

swimmer4 · 18/11/2020 09:01

Good news. DS has been given window of dates to come home and return to Uni. He just has to book his slot 😊
I hope everyone else begins to hear what’s happening for the Xmas break and that it all goes to plan.

Bakeandyarn · 18/11/2020 19:55

Same for us too swimmer slot booked and fingers crossed for them all.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2020 06:42

That's good news. dd hasn't heard yet, but we will manage somehow.
Think she is rather sad to be coming home.

Happy Christmas all. Xxx
DD home safe and sound.

Rowantree2000 · 07/07/2021 16:50

Wondering what news there is from people on this thread? Have your dc just graduated. Feel like I have been on a journey with you all even though I lack confidence to post. My ds has just graduated at Cambridge.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2021 20:00

Congratulations to your ds Rowan :) What is he going to do next?

We did go quiet on this thread. dd did well in her Part ii exams so she is staying on for her masters.

ofteninaspin · 08/07/2021 09:39

Congratulation to your DS on his graduation Rowan. I wish him well in whatever he plans to do next.

DD is staying on for a fourth year of an integrated master's.

Rowantree2000 · 08/07/2021 10:49

Great news for your dd Oh You Bad Kitten. My ds is staying in Cambridge to do a Masters too. Forgot many courses are 4 years Often in a Spin. Hopefully they will get a more normal year!

Biscuitburglar · 09/07/2021 09:26

Hello everyone, I’m an original poster from our early threads too. You got me through the stress of the application process and the worries of the settling in phase. I can’t believe how quickly it’s gone or how tumultuous the last couple of years have been with COVID making life so stop start for our DC, but here we are!

DD got her results yesterday from C and got a First! I’m so proud of her for sticking with it through some really hard times.

I hope your DC have managed to enjoy their time and go on to their next steps positively.

Bakeandyarn · 10/07/2021 19:51

Waiting on results here at the moment! DS is planning on gaining some work experience/internship placements over the next months before he decides whether he goes back for more study or opts for a training contract.

We will be doing it all again in October, hopefully, as DD has a place at Oxford, fingers crossed!

Sunndowne · 11/07/2021 00:07

It's so lovely to hear all your news. So glad you posted Rowan. So thrilled to hear of all these great results and masters in the offing.

I also am so grateful for the hand holding in application process and early days. Oxbridge is hard graft!!!

Haven't our DC been offered something really special for going there though!!!

DD back for Year 4 in September. Then it's probably training contract she is after but that seems very tough too.

Sunndowne · 11/07/2021 00:21

Congrats on DD at O bake and fingers crossed for your DS.

Amazing result biscuit! I hope your DD goes on to enjoy something new!

Kitten that's brill. I know your DD always wanted to do a masters. It's great! Another year in a lovely place!

And often congrats again, said so on other thread.

Glad you've been lurking Rowan.

Thought I'd respond individually, as I do remember you all over years- that have gone so fast.Smile

Rowantree2000 · 21/07/2021 13:28

Lovely to hear news from you all. My DS had a wonderful time despite Covid. It was very reassuring to follow your journeys through some strange experiences

ofteninaspin · 21/07/2021 13:42

The last three years have gone ridiculously quickly!
Good to read about wonderful times being had despite Covid, Rowantree.
Congratulations to Bake's DD on an Oxford offer. Hope all goes well with results next month.
Congratulations too to Biscuit's DD on a First!
DD has another year to go. The opportunity to convert the BA to an MBiol is definitely a silver lining for the 2018 Biologists. They will be the first Oxford MBiol cohort to graduate next year.

Sunndowne · 02/10/2021 22:22

Dear All,
Wanted to briefly revive this thread. Did your DC graduate and find nice jobs?
Or do some of us still have DC there for Year 4?

We've been on quite a journey together from interviews to here!!!
Best wishes all!!!

ofteninaspin · 03/10/2021 12:30

Agree Sunndowne, that it would be lovely to hear news of our 2018 cohort. Good luck to your DD for her final year.
DD is back in Oxford, currently earning some money as a student telethon fundraiser for her college and collecting the last of the data she needs for her project. She has no more exams (she sat Finals in the summer) as this year is fieldwork and dissertation. She is working on a project at the Bee Research Lab, based in Oxford and at Kew Gardens. She is living with two friends from her course in a college house in North Oxford and looking forward to a hopefully more normal year. She is very much "at home" in Oxford now and it feels very different from dropping her off as a fresher!
Good luck to Bake's DD who I believe is starting as a fresher at Oxford and I hope all is going well for Bake's DS too, of course.

Bakeandyarn · 03/10/2021 16:48

DD departed today, I’ve been blubbing a bit as she was very tearful. She’s feeling better now she’s been out and about with some other freshers. I really hope they all have a more normal year this year and it looks as if the second years will be having a Re-freshers week!

DS is doing his post grad law conversion after a bit of umming and ahing.

That sounds like a lovely year ahead for your DD often! They are all so grown up now, what a journey they’ve all had over the last few years.

Sunndowne · 03/10/2021 19:33

Law is possibly my DD's route too Bake. Is that happening in London? Also, you must be so proud, a 2nd at Oxbridge! What a wonderful opportunity it is for all of our offspring.

spin what a wonderful year for your DD. I think I remember they gave them a further year to complete the course?

My DD has a close school friend doing a grad job in Cambridge this year, so that's nice. Plus a few more YA friends. Lots from C went to her city.

DD is excited about her year. But may travel and work for a bit before she settles on a job straight afterwards. C is such a marathon which she loves but it's exhausting, as I'm sure yours may also say. Chile and British council has been mentioned.

But Law contract or civil service soon after if she can.

Do keep us posted for a bit! Keeps us all in the loop of the possibilities out there for our DC. And thank you so much for posting!
