University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

Endsleigh specialise in students I think

@JugglingFromHereToThere

Hi all, wondering if anyone could help with suggestions for student insurance. Move in day is Thursday so fast approaching! Particularly thinking of his lovely new laptop and his trumpet. Something independent would be preferred rather than an add on to household insurance Any suggestions?
DS's accommodation includes insurance (Warwick), might be worth checking if yours' does too.
Lightuptheroom · 30/08/2020 19:35

You might want to look at a separate insurance for the trumpet, covering carrying it around etc, I've used endsleigh before but there are others, look for one offering new for old as these things are expensive to replace, normal.student insurance wouldn't cover it

Can you extend your house contents cover to include it?
Freedobby · 30/08/2020 20:04

We use separate musical instrument insurance through Allianz as the coverage available was better than standard insurance policies (covered if left in a locked cupboard at uni etc). Had to claim on a couple of occasions over the years (accidental damage) and had no issues.

Swarskid2184 · 30/08/2020 21:25

DD moving into Leeds on 19 sept. Their policy is no one helping move in past threshold of flat....not going to happen! No way DD can carry her stuff in un assisted

JugglingFromHereToThere · 30/08/2020 21:41

Thanks all I might look into something from Endsleigh or Allianz
Endsleigh is a name I remember from my student days

Monkey2001 · 30/08/2020 22:46

@JugglingFromHereToThere another vote for Allianz musical instrument cover. We had their cover for a double bass and had to claim when the neck came off in transit and it all went through with no problems and the premium did not go up.

There are loads of codes to use for a discount, I think we got one for being in NCO, but could have used at least 1 other code for the discount.

RainbowDash101 · 31/08/2020 01:20

@LIZS that dining arrangement sounds horrible. How on earth are they going to make friendships?! I’m really starting to worry about my dd starting uni 5 hours from home. 😥

Empra123 · 31/08/2020 06:13

Allianz or Lark for musical instruments. DD had room contents insurance included in her rent on campus last year (Exeter)

ThingDoer · 31/08/2020 07:34

DD's accommodation includes insurance which you can upgrade - have you checked that option? We've been away (off-broadband) so not done this yet but plan to extend cover for her laptop and possibly her Highland dance costumes (about £1k worth -what are the chances of her leaving on a bus? She is her father's daughter after all and he has a lot of form!).

LIZS · 31/08/2020 08:50

@RainbowDash101 agree, the video is quite shocking and the layout draconian. Why can groups from same floor/hall not dine together at least? Dd is already anxious about going and this has not helped. Very expensive hall fee but may not be able to fully benefit Hmm

Peaseblossom22 · 31/08/2020 09:22

Have just seen that video , it looks horrific , have they thought about mental well-being at all? Also I don’t get the cutlery pouch, surely it would be better for cutlery to go through high temp sanitising dishwashers than to have dirty cutlery randomly roaming the building and lots of takeaway boxes and leftover food .

Rainbowdash I would be very surprised if Durham was like this , the colleges are smaller and owned by the university with staff who eat in college etc . Ds is going to my old college and I would have thought that it would be more likely that they will be set mealtimes by block/landing. I really hope not anyway . I do wish that more information was forthcoming about actual logistics etc though.

Swarskid2184 · 31/08/2020 09:40

Does anyone else have moving in restrictions which mean no parental help into the accommodation? This is causing both of us a lot of anxiety now. DD because she won’t be able to physically carry all her stuff by herself. Me, because I want to know where she is living and see it and help her move in...

suze28 · 31/08/2020 09:43

@Swarskid2184 where is this for? You'd think universities would seem to allow one family member to help. We have a one hour slot and one person helping.

Swarskid2184 · 31/08/2020 09:49

Leeds. Two hour slot, and no one helping past threshold to the accommodation. Apart from anything else- she is on the ninth floor!

suze28 · 31/08/2020 09:52

That seems incredibly unfair.

aibutohavethisusername · 31/08/2020 09:56

Anyone else still waiting to hear about accommodation?

Newgirls · 31/08/2020 10:01

That seems odd by Leeds - we have a slot and 1 person helping

Hate the edin dining idea.

None of its very consistent is it? And very offputting to students when it’s nervewracking for many

Hoghgyni · 31/08/2020 10:01

Is Leeds in one of the high risk areas? I imagine Manchester etc are going to be very risk averse.

ShaunaTheSheep · 31/08/2020 10:30

@Swarskid2184 DS is Leeds too - luckily he packs light, so will be able to carry his stuff, not sure what floor but no higher than second, looking at the building.

He’s offered to video the flat and WhatsApp me as I wait outside!

Newgirls · 31/08/2020 10:33

Leeds is an excellent city and uni so I hope once they manage to get in it will be worth it. They don’t make it easy do they

ShaunaTheSheep · 31/08/2020 10:39

DS has his timetable - one hour a week face to face! But he will not countenance not moving there. There’s no information on social distancing in his halls yet - the WhatsApp group has taken off and they are all trying to work out what the layout and living arrangements are as it doesn’t seem to be conventional flats - they are hoping for a bigger bubble than, say 6 in a flat, and it being quite social. (It’s a horrid location so needs some positives!)

KingscoteStaff · 31/08/2020 10:55

DS also has timetable - it’s a two week one, so he gets 6 lectures and 6 hours small group tutorials per fortnight (one for each module).

They are also encouraging students to ‘attend’ lectures of a few modules that they didn’t choose. Deja vu for me as some of the most inspiring lectures I attended at university were the Philosophy ones that my room mate raved about and dragged me along to!

Peaseblossom22 · 31/08/2020 10:57

That’s interesting Kingscote , not sure if ds has his timetable yet , is that including optional
Modules as well or just compulsory so far .
