University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

Whoever was talking about thick duvets for Durham - you may well need it. I remember Durham as being freezing when I was there!

Shangrilalala · 29/08/2020 10:08

On the subject of Durham’s chill, I remember my mother being obsessed with buying me a supply of thermal vests prior to going up to Durham. When winter struck, I quickly realised why. I’m now having exactly the same conversations with DD who looks at me like I’m from the Stone Age and shows me her collection of base layers. I feel old...

Peaseblossom22 · 29/08/2020 13:23

Warm coat and stout shoes especially if in a Hill College . Although as ds pointed out he won’t be going up and down the hill very much as lectures are online Sad

sandybayley · 29/08/2020 13:35

For anyone heading to Edinburgh I'd also recommend wrapping up and investing a n thick scarves. There is an bone-chilling wind on many days. I remember walking from Marchmont to George Square with wind blasting at me and having a headache by the time I arrived.

KingscoteStaff · 29/08/2020 13:36

@Peaseblossom22 DS is currently planning to take his big black down jacket and his late Grandfather’s c.1949 overcoat. I keep muttering about scarves and gloves, but he looks pityingly at me and says, ‘But you know I’d lose them...’. Maybe he’ll have changed his mind by Christmas!

ThingDoer · 29/08/2020 15:27

@sandybayley I have mentioned to dd that she has no comprehension of how windy Edinburgh is 😂. She will be in Warrender Park Rd so similar walk to the one you mention.

sandybayley · 29/08/2020 15:33

@ThingDoer - one of my flats was in Warrender Park Road! Also Marchmont Road and Spottiswode! DH lived over the chip shop on Marchmont Road.

TheDrsDocMartens · 29/08/2020 16:10

We live in Cumbria. When I was in Edinburgh in Feb it felt much warmer !
Dd2 is used to being on hills and fells in all weathers so shouldn’t be too bad. SHe moves next Sat and is in the same building as two of her friends but different flats so thats a good start!

ThingDoer · 29/08/2020 16:13

@TheDrsDocMartens oh I have not kept up! Did not realise your dd going to Edinburgh in end too! Glad it all worked out. Dd will know no one but happy with that.Has made contact with 3 flat mates who all seem fine.

TheDrsDocMartens · 29/08/2020 21:16

No she’s at Heriot-Watt now. Well from this time next week!
She didn’t forgive Edinburgh for being rude and unhelpful 😳

ThingDoer · 29/08/2020 21:25

Well I think that's fair enough @TheDrsDocMartens

I work for an English university and I know we aim to bend over backwards to be helpful especially for students who are first in their families to go to uni - and that attitude comes straight from our VC.

I have said to dd it's not a uni to spoon feed her, she will need to be pro active to get the most out of her time there. You can imagine how well that goes down 😂😂

jumpher · 29/08/2020 23:02

My daughter is moving to Edinburgh for uni this weekend and it looks like she is packing for an exhibition to the North Pole.

Xenia · 30/08/2020 09:00

I am from the NE and live in London now and we definitely notice about 1 or 2 degrees colder in the NE of England. It is not a vast difference but does mean it is best to wrap up warmly. I was at Manchester known for rain and as I went everywhere on my bike I was constantly soaked even with a kagule and one of those huge cycle capes.

ThrawnCow · 30/08/2020 09:45

I see the debate about the safety of universities returning has begun. Watching with concern.

Peaseblossom22 · 30/08/2020 09:54

If Nicola Sturgeon sends Scottish Universities completely online English and Welsh will follow which is precisely why I was trying to persuade my ds to defer . But at least they will all be at home together I suppose

Newgirls · 30/08/2020 09:55

It will be a calamity - my dd will pull out this year too. Or at very least not go to accom, will save her 7k and the uni won’t have that money?

ThrawnCow · 30/08/2020 09:56

When are the Scots due back? That's a late decision, surely?

goodbyestranger · 30/08/2020 09:57

There will be a huge wave of deferrals if that happens. I can't imagine my DC paying fees to stay at home. Good luck with that one.

Newgirls · 30/08/2020 09:57

Next Monday! We are due to travel on Sunday and haven’t paid anything yet. So will decide after the announcement. Lots of international students already at the Scottish unis and expecting small groups and lab work to be live.

goodbyestranger · 30/08/2020 09:58

The fee position is a fairly critical difference.

Newgirls · 30/08/2020 09:59

The UCU might be looking at job losses. Madness.

goodbyestranger · 30/08/2020 10:00

In Scotland. Nothing there, £9250 in England. DD4 would defer I'm almost sure.

Newgirls · 30/08/2020 10:01

I know of a couple of Scottish students who are now staying at home but will start their courses online. So it will be accom income that suffers. Unis may still get education fees - kids might as well so that.

Peaseblossom22 · 30/08/2020 10:26

@goodbyestranger let’s hope it doesn’t happen, my feeling is that if that happens the door will close on deferrals as Universities will need to maximise income .

Newgirls · 30/08/2020 10:42

Unis might want to close the door on deferrals but plenty still have places. Out of my dds 5 offers 4 have clearing places.

The unis or rather the UCU are being incredibly arrogant. The students have options including open uni.
