University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

I'm not sure if there are any restrictions on numbers of people who can go to drop off at Lancaster. Nothing has been said yet. Luckily ds has been allocated a Saturday arrival, think they are staggering it all week and his college is the last day to arrive . Dd is v keen to come too and see the uni, she's not been before and is v curious as to what dd loves about it. I can't believe it's almost September, am mentally preparing for an empty nest.

Badgerstmary · 26/08/2020 08:27

Still waiting on accommodation here for Exeter. Dd has been told she has accommodation just don’t know where. She is phoning them today as we really need a date/time slot due to DH being a farmer & me teaching.

ofteninaspin · 26/08/2020 08:30

@Hoghgyni, I know this is the wrong thread but......four A Levels are the norm for DC’s school in Lower Sixth. You can drop an A level at the end of the year but everyone starts an EPQ in the summer term that is completed by Easter of Upper Sixth. If you take Maths and Further Maths, you potentially take five A Levels but four is the norm plus an EPQ.
DS has a Nationwide account and will stick with that as he already has a railcard.
Dropping off day is a Friday. DS has a two hour slot and is allowed two “helpers”.

honkytonkheroe · 26/08/2020 08:32

We are still waiting for DD to get her place back at Uni of Birmingham for Psychology. Her CAGs met her offer but her moderated grade didn't. She had deferred entry until 2021 anyway so won't be top of their list. She has emailed them. Anyone else waiting on Birmingham? Sorry I do dip in to this conversation from time to time but not enough for anyone to recognise me!

Hoghgyni · 26/08/2020 08:51

Often DD's old sixth form is now only offering 2 hours of contact time each week per subject rather than the previous 5. I think they will heartily stick to their A level policy this year.

ofteninaspin · 26/08/2020 09:16

Ah yes, Hogh, it seems many sixth forms are adopting the same strategy from September ie six hours teaching each week for three A level subjects. Perhaps three subjects will become the norm across the board. It will certainly leave more time for independent study, EPQs, sport etc.

Monkey2001 · 26/08/2020 09:20

Wow, with a DS going into Y12, not happy about the idea of 2 hours/subject a week!

choirmumoftwo · 26/08/2020 09:40

specialted Lancaster accommodation page says one person to help with move in. Not sure if there'll be more information to follow.

specialted · 26/08/2020 11:01

Thanks @choirmumoftwo. That's a pain as we both wanted to go. Maybe dh can wait in the car as he's not very good at the whole making room cosy stuff!

choirmumoftwo · 26/08/2020 11:07

Yes, me and DH are both going with DD as we're going on holiday straight after. Maybe we'll take turns carrying stuff in!
What is your DC doing and which accommodation?

specialted · 26/08/2020 11:28

@choirmumoftwo ds is doing Spanish and history and is in a grizedale townhouse. How about your dd?

choirmumoftwo · 26/08/2020 15:10

MORSE and County townhouse (Grizedale was second choice).

DuckyMcDuck · 26/08/2020 17:56

@choirmumoftwo

MORSE and County townhouse (Grizedale was second choice).
Am I the only person who had to google MORSE to check it wasn't anything to do with Colin Dexter's detective Grin ?
specialted · 26/08/2020 18:56

@DuckyMcDuck no!

northender · 26/08/2020 19:16

Can't decide what to advise ds. He is still waiting for Lancaster to review his application with the mitigation statements from college. He has his insurance offer but would prefer Lancaster. I think the chance of him being accepted is minimal & think he needs certainty, but just want to know one way or the other. He rang today & was again told that they are still working through reviews & that it'll be s few more days [sigh]

Gymntonic · 26/08/2020 19:25

@northender What's the insurance offer? What type of course? Could he wait a year if it came to that? I know it's frustrating but it really depends on the alternative.

northender · 26/08/2020 19:34

gym it's a similar course but at a lower ranked uni. He was devastated on results day, but has come round to the idea of it. It's a long story, but he knows he's academically capable of Lancaster but has had 3 years of multiple health problems & was diagnosed with ME at the start of Y13 so college has been a struggle. He won't defer so it's just s case of how long to give them to give an answer. Deep down I know I've got this vain hope that he will get a lucky break as he so deserves it. In reality he would probably be better giving up on it and allowing himself to plan for insurance offer.

specialted · 26/08/2020 19:45

I think I would hang out for Lancaster decision. If that's where he really wants to go.

choirmumoftwo · 26/08/2020 19:55

I should probably have explained what MORSE is - sorry!!
It's only offered at 3 places so it's a bit niche but should suit DD down to the ground.
It's weird to think our DC may end up knowing each other isn't it?

TheDrsDocMartens · 26/08/2020 19:57

Nationwide has a student account and you get a decent overdraft.

TerfTerfTerf · 26/08/2020 20:06

Hi all
Wonder if anyone can give us some assistance?
DS is waiting for an offer from Durham from his CAGs - they will offer for 2020 or defer.
Meanwhile he has accepted his insurance offer (from original awarded grades) from York.

York have asked him to enrol by 2 Sep but Durham have said they will let him know 'By' the 7 Sept. what should he do? He will accept Durham if it's for this year but otherwise he wants York.

Help!

seedybird · 26/08/2020 20:23

@TheDrsDocMartens

Nationwide has a student account and you get a decent overdraft.
Nationwide is the one DD has plumped for, after doing her research. It was the guaranteed overdraft that swung it for her.
Snozzlemaid · 26/08/2020 21:04

My DD's gone for Nationwide as well. I get her a railcard using Tesco Clubcard vouchers so didn't need that.

TheDrsDocMartens · 26/08/2020 21:28

Nationwide was recommended somewhere as the best if you didn’t want the railcard.

goodbyestranger · 26/08/2020 21:39

TerfTerfTerf my instinct would be to hold out for Durham's decision, with the expectation that it will be for 2021, and in the meanwhile to try to squeeze some positives out of a gap year. But then I'm very biased in favour of Durham.
