Well, it’s been a crazy few days.

I have no skin in this game as dd is a 3rd year undergrad but just lurk out of interest. I'm so sorry for all dc who are disappointed today and pleased for those who have had good news.
@UntamedWisteria - as a Scot with a dc at a Scottish uni I'm happy to answer questions or otherwise reassure that really its not bad up here - we are, on the whole, a decent bunch and usually very welcoming. Degree programmes at Scottish universities are often very flexible and allow people to change between / try different subjects more easily.
Certainly worth going to have a look - or come over to Scotsnet and see if anyone has more detailed knowledge of the area/ institution

What a great empathetic response from Exeter . Individuals not statistics.

hobbema · 13/08/2020 19:06

More support for @sandybayley who is never anything other than supportive. Those on the Oxbridge thread know I have had the best and worst of days with one twin getting into Cambridge and the other losing firm and insurance offers. It’s not preening to be honest on this of all threads and they majority of us are I’m sure keen to cheer achievement as well as commiserate with those who havent hit their targets.

UntamedWisteria · 13/08/2020 19:10

readsalotgirl63 thank you - I'm a massive fan of Scotland, it's DS who isn't sure.

He's musing between a e-learning place from Manchester and his insurance choice Edinburgh, any view of both from anyone would be appreciated.

Newgirls · 13/08/2020 19:12

Edinburgh would be an amazing place to live and study. Get him on a train! It’s many people’s first choice!

sandybayley · 13/08/2020 19:18

Another vote for Edinburgh! Amazing city and great university. My MA from there has served me very well and in my line of work I meet a lot of Edinburgh graduates. DD is thinking about it as a choice for medicine in 2022 and I will definitely encourage her.

Is everyone else exhausted? I feel like I haven't slept for days and the much welcome rain has now made it horribly humid. Plus DDog is hiding under DS1's bed because of the background thunder.

Ulelia · 13/08/2020 19:24

When offers are changed to unconditional on results day it means the student has a place, not that they changed their decision. So either they got the grades required (so now have no more conditions to meet), or didn't but are in anyway (ditto). It is a strange terminology I think.

Drumple · 13/08/2020 19:25

I’m so sorry I didn’t realise this was a clique thread and I shouldn’t have posted. Apologies.

Ulelia · 13/08/2020 19:29

That was a reply to a post five pages ago, sorry!

Teacher and Head of UCAS applications in a private school here with mostly small cohorts. 40% of our CAGs downgraded by 1 grade. However, all but one student got into their first choice, despite missing 1, 2 or 3 grades overall. The one didn't get insurance either, as she exceeded the offer overall (A*AB, offer of ABB) because the B was in the subject required to be an A. Both algorithm and UCAS places are defying all our understanding of the system and changes.

ClerkMaxwell · 13/08/2020 19:31

@UntamedWisteria DD going to Edinburgh this year (economics). It was her second choice (she didn't get an offer from her first StA). However she's really warmed to Edinburgh particularly because of the huge number of outside subjects you can study in your first couple of years. I think it will suit her better to be in a city albeit a small one. I am a Glaswegian but have to admit Edinburgh is a great. Don't let your DS be put off by some people in the Facebook chats or by the Pollock TV on Youtube. DD says her hall group chat is much better (small self catering halls near the meadows). What subject is your DS considering?

readsalotgirl63 · 13/08/2020 19:31

I don't really know Edinburgh - I'm a Glaswegian Grin! However I do acknowledge that Edinburgh is a beautiful city and the university is world class. I have friends with dc at Edinburgh who had /are having a great time and I have family who love living there. DD applied there (Law) and thought she'd also have had a good experience but went to Glasgow instead.
I agree with @sandybayley - get him on a train !

FalsePerceptions · 13/08/2020 19:54

I'm sorry to jump onto this thread very late on but it's been a pretty hard day here as my daughter received an unexpected set of results which have lost her her firm choice and seriously restricted other options she might have had.

We had assumed that she would be told her teacher-assessed grades today, but haven't been able to access them as the school are treating it very seriously as a data protection issue. We have been variously told in the course of today that they would be issued (a) within five weeks; (b) within twenty days; and (c) that with luck they would be with her today. As yet she's been told nothing.

Please could any of you tell me if your children have received their teacher-assessed grades, and if so, what process you had to go through to get them released?

SnapSnapDragon · 13/08/2020 20:01

Yes @sandybayley I'm exhausted too, in a nice way. I hope you enjoyed your cake with the proud grandparents. Sounds so lovely. I confess I called an old phone number this evening just to hear my mother's voice on the answerphone. She would have been bursting with pride Smile

Hoghgyni · 13/08/2020 20:02

FalsePerceptions DD's school initially said this morning that they would not release CAGs. However, they received an enormous number of requests which could have all become FOI requests and relented this afternoon and added them to the student portal for everyone.

I suggest that you nudge the school by saying that you don't wish them to incur the time and expense of a formal FOI request, so you would be grateful to they gave your DD the relevant information as a matter of urgency.

SnapSnapDragon · 13/08/2020 20:02

Edinburgh absolutely lovely by the way. I know it v well if anyone has questions.

MillicentMartha · 13/08/2020 20:04

I’m sorry to hear that @FalsePerceptions. Issuing of CAGs seems to be quite random across schools. DS has to ‘formally request’ them but we haven’t bothered so I don’t know how long it would take. His friends at his old school were issued them along with their results along with their mock grades. One school told my friend that it was ‘against the law’ to issue them at all. They obviously haven’t read the guidance! 🙄

You can make a Subject Access Request I believe, and the school is required to issue them, but with quite a long deadline. Most seem to prefer to issue them by less formal request.

@FalsePerceptions sorry to hear that. We just called and they told us them. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can come along and help you.

False, our CAGs were made available automatically today (and would have been emailed out on Monday, before the triple lock announcement). However, a friend who teaches in a different area was horrified to hear we'd had them, as she'd been assured her assessed grades were going to be kept confidential)
Railingsohno · 13/08/2020 20:06

@MillicentMartha a belated well done to your son on his Manchester place. You must be delighted and relieved! Smile It’s exhausting this.

SnapSnapDragon · 13/08/2020 20:07

Sorry for the triple post but I've just seen @FalsePerceptions question. What a terrible situation, I'm so sorry. DS school gave CAG and ranking to anyone who asked. They had announced this earlier with a special email address to make the request. From what I can tell, they were very responsive. How bizarre and unhelpful of your school not to give this info.

Hoghgyni · 13/08/2020 20:08

As another long standing poster who has been following stories from Sandy, Millicent, Kingscote and many others from the start of their GCSEs, I'm relieved to say that DD will be taking a place at Oxford in October. It's been a very difficult day as most of her friends have missed their offers. I'm so pleased to hear some good news on this thread, but it's so sad to see some having to rapidly change their direction.

Eve · 13/08/2020 20:09

@Collision DS2 is off to Loughborough, DS1 is going into his final year there

seedybird · 13/08/2020 20:10

I feel like I've lived 5 days in one and am now utterly exhausted.

It's getting near the end of a very long day and I want to congratulate everyone who got the results that they needed. Smile

I also want to say how much my thoughts are with the parents and DC who suffered terrible disappointments and shocks, as a consequence of this shambolic fiasco...and it's not over yet, as we wait to hear what Ofqual have to say about the criteria for mock exam appeals. You all deserve better than this and I’ll be thinking of you. Flowers

Yep, I’ve been on some of these threads since pre-GCSE days and they’ve provided invaluable support. Congratulations to those who got their grades and / or places. I think this year has been a complete shambles for so many of the kids, and really hope they manage to get onto courses they will enjoy.

DD2 is going into her 4th year of Economics at Edinburgh. She has loved every minute, and made the most of all the opportunities on offer.
