Well, it’s been a crazy few days.

DS has had his top choice confirmed through UCAS Track-it comes up as unconditional offer, but the offer letter with congratulations, says at the bottom that it’s conditional on him getting 3xA which he didn’t get?!!

Is that just automated? Can anyone on here whose DC has dropped a grade but still got the UCAS offer tell me if theirs says the same?

MillicentMartha · 13/08/2020 13:41
@MillicentMartha thank you! Quite nerve wracking. How did your DS (sorry if that’s wrong!) get on?
He did fine, actually. Maybe not what he could have achieved in an exam as he’s a last minute pull it out of the bag sort of boy, but enough for his first choice of Manchester. I’m sorry for those who are disappointed, though.

@Letseatgrandma my Dd has the same on hers, we assumed it was just automated as it says congratulations on your place on her track home page.

mumof42020 · 13/08/2020 13:44

We were on a high at 8am this morning with DS's confirmed place at first choice uni. Pride comes before a fall as it was a crushing blow when he picked up his results. 3 of DS's grades are lower than CAGs and mocks so his uni have ignored his results and confirmed his place. Good on them for using some common sense and for looking at the bigger picture. DS knows he is one of the lucky ones but he is gutted and no matter if he is upgraded after the appeal he feels this takes away any glory from his achievements. He will do the "resits" if necessary but he is devastated.

Incacat2 · 13/08/2020 13:53

My daughter was predicted AAA, had a place at medical school. She attends a top performing grammar school. She got...CBB. The c grade was in her best subject. We are appealing with the help of the Head, but DD actually said that she has nothing to live for. We are doing all we can.

Appuskidu · 13/08/2020 13:55

@Sostenueto

Dgd in to KCL! Yay! Made insurance too Bristol.
Can you get offered both firm and conditional?!
Mintlegs · 13/08/2020 13:56

Can you appeal if mock:c, teachers assessment to Ofqual: b and Ofqual result:c
Are you able to appeal based on the teacher assessment or is it just the mock?

Mintlegs · 13/08/2020 13:57

DS doing psychology and many peers have not got what expected in well performing school

IAmTooBloodyHot · 13/08/2020 13:58

That's awful @Incacat2. How can she be downgraded so much from a grammar school where presumably they all get good grades every year? It makes no sense. Pah! What a bloody joke this all is.
I wish you well with the appeal Thanks

ThrawnCow · 13/08/2020 13:58

Just the mock I'm afraid.

MillicentMartha · 13/08/2020 14:02

If track hasn’t updated, it means you are borderline and they are still considering you.

That’s is reassuring, thank you!

The working this morning have been unreal-not getting the grades, getting offered first choice, then seeing the conditional on getting 3 As??

It definitely says congratulations he has a place though

Arghh!

Incacat2 · 13/08/2020 14:03

Thanks @IAmTooBloodyHot it has been a devastating morning. I could barely keep it together for her, but went into 'organisational mode,' by helping her phone school and the uni. The Head of the school is going to the MP and the papers. She's on a mission for us, and others. The grammar schools in our area have definitely been hit hard. It's a waiting game now. Not a nice one.

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/08/2020 14:09

DS has said that a parent near the school has invited in kids who were trying to do clearing from their phones on the pavement. There are so many needing help that the school ran out of covid safe space for them Sad

That’s awful. I feel so sorry for her, I hope things work out for her.

BoxAndKnife · 13/08/2020 14:20

What a shit-show. I'm so sorry for all your dc who have had disappointments this morning. It feels devastating; it is important to remember that it's not the end though.

A PP up-thread said something about your A-level results being on your CV forever. Anecdata alert but I really stuffed up my A-levels, ended up going through Clearing (in the old days when only complete duffers got their uni places through Clearing) and I am now a senior academic at an RG uni that rejected me out of hand many years ago. So while I know this situation is different, please do let your dcs know that this is absolutely not the end of the road.

Good luck everyone Flowers

HPFA · 13/08/2020 14:20

@Incacat2

There seem to be some very weird things going on with the algorithm. A report of a school getting twice as many U grades as in any of the previous three years. Schools who were very careful to keep their predictions within what was normal for the school still getting heavily downgraded.

IAmTooBloodyHot · 13/08/2020 14:21

Well done to her after all she's been through @Sostenueto. My DD's friend missed out on KCL, such a shame.

Hi guys. Long term lurker and Dad of 18 Year Old who has done OK today (thank God). Always rely on MN for some sensible debate at times like this. Have no background in Education, but 25 years career in Data and Stats and obviously a vested interest in this fiasco. Set up an account just to make this one point. There are obviously lots of stories and different experiences here, and each and every one is a personal triumph or tragedy, so don't want to comment on individual cases other than to offer my heartfelt sympathy to all your children. In my view some form of standardisation was always going to be needed (all that the Scots have done is replace one unfairness with several others, between year groups and between more generous and more strict CAG centres) but the way its been done is poor, some appeal process for the exceptional cases was always going to be needed. The last minute English Mock decision is nonsense. The Welsh probably have the best solution (albeit one not available to Eng/Sco/NI) BUT you guys need to read this, if true that is the biggest scandal in all of this and really needs concerted investigation and action:

www.bhasvic.ac.uk/news/college-sector-asks-for-review-of-grades

Quote :"Our hypothesis is that the worrying results might be a quirk of the process, in which smaller centres with lower student numbers systematically had their centre assessed grades confirmed, resulting in a hit for the larger centres in order to minimise overall grade inflation. We also believe that the algorithm may not have taken value added data into account adequately"

PavlovianPooch · 13/08/2020 14:32

Thanks for that Ant.

Just wanted to say that I have looked at the clearing for the Uni of DDs choice and have discovered that she would get in with the grades she has been given if she was an overseas student.

SnapSnapDragon · 13/08/2020 14:33

Really interesting, thanks ant. I'm just flabbergasted that with over four months to work this out, nobody spotted this problem. We were on the good side of the stats but it's so hard hearing about the injustices.

MrsMcMuffins · 13/08/2020 14:36

@Incacat2 gutted for your DD. Heartbreaking. This thread is breaking my heart reading it and making me so angry on behalf of all our young people.

HPFA · 13/08/2020 14:38

Seems some absolute madness around.

Ant1966 · 13/08/2020 14:39

Snap. I suspect that the reason these things were not spotted is that the Central Govt. people involved think they know better than Education professionals and suspect their motives and are therefore unwilling to properly consult them or engage with them in the process up front. It's an institutional arrogance on the part of Central Govt towards other parts of the establishment that I've sadly seen with my own eyes elsewhere during the Covid Crisis.

choirmumoftwo · 13/08/2020 14:41

DD has an unconditional offer so was very fortunate. Original UCAS prediction was A*AA, mocks ABC after a prolonged period of illness and awarded AAB today. Disappointed that her maths was downgraded to A but it doesn't affect her going forward.
Wishing all best wishes to everyone going forward. What a total debacle.
