Well, it’s been a crazy few days.

Old thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3962422-University-2020-6-The-one-with-the-results-at-the-end?watched=1&msgid=99082625#99082625

Don't think that's right about Pre-U. They were also subject to the moderation/downgrading, and DS's school is preparing to appeal (for the very small number of pupils whose mocks were better than results).

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 13/08/2020 12:11

Just delurking to vent

So sorry for everyone whose children are having a shitty results day

Dds college Are appealing as 18 out of 28 of her class mates where downgraded...including her

TheDrsDocMartens · 13/08/2020 12:21

School said they can’t appeal on the subject dd2 got a C in. Not meeting appeal criteria as they mark mocks very harshly is one thing that has rocked the results.
Dd2 didn’t get her first choice. Decided against the insurance and will accept elsewhere this afternoon.

TheDrsDocMartens · 13/08/2020 12:21

Dd2 was AAB down to ABC. Uni wanted ABB.

Hello,

I've been lurking on this thread for a while. My daughter got her grades last summer and took a year out and so it starting university alongside your children this year.

I wanted to send best wishes to you all today as you deal with this mess.

My daughter had an unsteady path to where she is now and after a disaster at AS level left her school and went back to the start of her A levels elsewhere. There were tears but also a lot of determination.

It's not as simple as taking a gap year and sitting the exams though or sitting them in September. Many institutions didn't finish the syllabus and you can't just take a year off and turn up next May and sit the exams. They would have to be in classes being taught to do well. For some people who's kids are at independent schools this is a significant drain on finances. So I find Sunglasses post a bit off but will say no more.

HerstoryInTheMaking · 13/08/2020 12:34

For all those with DD getting ABC, BBB ACC etc there are some great clearing options about.

Aragog · 13/08/2020 12:36

Does anyone know how long the emails take to come from the university,

Dd rejected the amended first choice offer- lower course and didn't offer what she wanted.

She had an unconditional insurance place which is now saying confirmed - and firmly accepted.

Next steps says to check the confirmation email letter carefully.

But how long does that email take to come?

We can't apply for accommodation until it comes through. We emailed and it just says they can't guarantee accommodation for a level results day applicants and to wait for the letter

ohwellthatwasfun · 13/08/2020 12:37

BBC from ABB at mocks (at Christmas) & AAB predicted, excellent GCSE results & two As from AS level/EPQ already. We're trying to convince her to appeal the A subject at least, she has never got lower than A the B is a massive joke. Missed both firm & insurance offers but insurance have taken her anyway. She's refusing to talk about it.

HerstoryInTheMaking · 13/08/2020 12:40

This is a Grade A disaster.

ohwellthatwasfun · 13/08/2020 12:44

it's a complete nightmare, I almost can't believe it. In dd's case it's the knock on effect of those grades for postgrad training etc. And the unfairness, it's overwhelming. I am so angry.

Railingsohno · 13/08/2020 12:44

Ucas question. DS is holding an offer but has got another offer through Clearing (in writing) - how can he add the new offer into ucas? Does he need to decline the original place? Paranoid about doing the wrong thing!

MillicentMartha · 13/08/2020 13:02

@Railingsohno, he’ll have to decline his place on track, get his clearing number and inform his clearing uni. It should get updated on track after 3. So long as he has his new offer in writing all is good.

MillicentMartha · 13/08/2020 13:04

@Aragog, is the confirmation letter on track? DS just had to download it from track, rather than a separate email from the uni.

DS has been trying to get through to his first choice Uni all morning on phone. Any advice?

he is 1 grade short of his offer, and is hoping they'll let him in...

PavlovianPooch · 13/08/2020 13:18

DD has managed to speak to college. She hasn't the grounds for any appeal, so all we can do is lobby our MP.

Someone mentioned up thread about mocks being difficult. The subject DD received a C for (but was predicted a B) was a disaster for everyone at the mock. It was deliberately a hard assessment and marked harshly.

In any event, some people -- usually boys - don't bother with putting the effort in at all until they have to. I'm wondering if boys have fared worse under this system.

Why on earth haven't they taken GCSE grades into account?

ChiaraRimini · 13/08/2020 13:20

Posting for advice, DS has been turned down by both his firm and insurance places (Mcr and Leeds), for deferred entry in 2021-he had always planned to take a gap year. He got BBC and needed/was predicted AAB for Politics. So he dropped a grade on each subject, he feels absolutely gutted as he worked hard and was getting As in coursework.
The school haven't released his CAG scores he has made a subject access request for them.
He is gutted and We really don't know what to do for the best, is it worth contacting the Unis to ask for their advice.

LIZS · 13/08/2020 13:22

Worth checking spam folder as emails may come from different admissions addresses.

Sostenueto · 13/08/2020 13:26

Dgd in to KCL! Yay! Made insurance too Bristol.

MonsterSister · 13/08/2020 13:26

I'm wondering if boys have fared worse under this system.

Anecdote, I know, but one of DD's friends goofed around gleefully because 'they're only mocks, who cares?' and has missed his Oxford offer. I doubt he's the only one.

Empra123 · 13/08/2020 13:28

ABB here which is what she needed. Sure one of the Bs has been moderated down but since she's where she wants to be we won't bother to appeal.

Seems as if most of her cohort have been reasonably happy with the way grades have come out.

Railingsohno · 13/08/2020 13:30

@MillicentMartha thank you! Quite nerve wracking. How did your DS (sorry if that’s wrong!) get on?

Gymntonic · 13/08/2020 13:32

DD unfollowed her first choice on Instagram and they've come after her with an offer for human biology. After offering her nothing this morning when she phoned to ask about biology courses. She's on the phone now and they're emailing the offer. Too early for Wine?

Aragog · 13/08/2020 13:33

Its the one from the university. Apparently it has the link on for applying for accommodation.
We already know that accommodation on campus will be low when applying at this stage, but keen to try and apply for a place asap, as we do feel DD would benefit from being on campus this year if at all possible. But frustrating as can't do it until the email arrives.

Drumple · 13/08/2020 13:34

@nicky2512

Drumple. I just saw that. Surely they will have to do something here too like in England, Scotland and Wales. I have heard some awful stories this morning. Nolan has Peter weir on tomorrow. Will be interesting to hear.
Me too @nicky2512 some utterly heartbreaking stories.

My DD's friend has been trying all morning to get through to her first uni choice too with no luck. Even worse she hasn't even had her track updated. Bloody disgraceful poor girl.
