Oxbridge 2020 (thread 10) - the path to the first term (just one slight hurdle to clear first)

For better or worse, there is a bit of a bond of mutual experience between parents whose DC go through the Oxbridge application process. Thank you for your companionship so far - and thank you to others who started the earlier threads in this series.

This thread should take us to the start of the first term (whatever form that takes). All welcome here, but for many of us hopefully this will be the place for practical support as we help prepare these peculiar* young adults to spread their wings.

But the first item on the agenda appears to be the small matter of judgement...

*or for those who chose Oxford, very peculiar.

@FalsePerceptions is your DC into their insurance?

@TerfTerfTerf sounds like a chaotic day for your DS! A*BB are wonderful grades really so good luck to him.

KingscoteStaff · 13/08/2020 09:17

Just popping in to say well done to all your DC - DS is off to Durham having treated my suggestion of a gap year and another go at Oxbridge with laughing contempt🙄😄😄

Curtaincard · 13/08/2020 09:22

Ds missed his offer . Didn’t get the one star needed. Clutching at straws but would Track show rejected against oxford now. His insurance updated to say his space is guaranteed if he doesn’t meet his firm .

TerfTerfTerf · 13/08/2020 09:26

Well done @KingscoteStaff! I've tried to persuade DS to consider a gap year but actually now I think it's better for him to just get on with uni as next year might all be a bit of a muddle, travel-wise especially.

Moresandwiches · 13/08/2020 09:31

DD missed Cambridge by 1 grade. But she's into her insurance choice of Durham, which I'm very happy about. I was worried that she'd be in Clearing.

MiniJellyBeans · 13/08/2020 09:32

DD1 got her place at Oxford!! She was downgraded by the algorithm in two subjects, but managed to match her offer exactly so is fine about it :)

Congrats to everyone who has had good news, but so sorry for anyone struggling with not so good news this morning.

Pepermintea · 13/08/2020 09:34

DS into Oxford maths😊. Track update at 8:30. Just got results at school 3xA* &A

Pepermintea · 13/08/2020 09:35

Congratulations to all who are pleased and hugs to everyone else

hobbema · 13/08/2020 09:36

Could see at 8am that DD had AA A but not the required A* in History. 45 agonising minutes waiting to get into track, SHE’S IN .
@sandybayley; we dont need the tent!

Well done everyone, I wont clog up a list but I’ve been writing you all done on a pad and cheering every one of you.

goodbyestranger · 13/08/2020 09:36

DD into Oxford/ 3 A*, so very relieved.

Congratulations to all those with the required grades, commiserations to those without. A very unfair year.

hobbema · 13/08/2020 09:38

That should read 2 A STAR..
Pretty much everyone in DD’s brainy cohort downgraded by moderation and sadly DT2 has come out badly with no offer.

As ever, twin parenting is a bitter sweet joy. DD1 is celebrating her success searching Clearing for DD2 while latter has a good cry.

goodbyestranger · 13/08/2020 09:40

Curtaincard if Oxford has said yes the college should email around 10am.

goodbyestranger · 13/08/2020 09:41

Oh dear hobbema, very sorry.

FalsePerceptions · 13/08/2020 09:46

She met her insurance (RG univ) but is so unhappy with the grades she's been given that she can't take any pleasure from that.

We have a few days of misery to get through before this starts to turn around I think! The lack of control in any of it has really upset her.

gizmo · 13/08/2020 09:47

Oh I'm sorry @hobbema. What does DT2 want to do? I was looking on clearing earlier this week and there did seem to be a lot of options for those with a scienc-ey mindsight..

sandybayley · 13/08/2020 09:53

DS1 grades now through. 3 A star and 1 A.

Congratulations to all, particularly @goodbyestranger for her marathon Oxbridge sprint.

Commiserations to those who haven't made it this time. Too much MN and WhatsApp to keep up.

sandybayley · 13/08/2020 09:55

@hobbema - twin parenting must be so hard. 🙁

hobbema · 13/08/2020 10:02

Thanks guys, it’s a replay of GCSE results and not entirely unexpected but more painful. One day we’ll get to have a straight celebration , unalloyed by another’s disappointment, just not today.

Going for a slightly tipsy dog walk on my own for a cry. Back soon. Thank you for caring x

Unescorted · 13/08/2020 10:12

@Hobbema that must be so difficult.

HuaShan · 13/08/2020 10:15

DS into Oxford, moderated in one subject but met his offer. So relieved. Looks like a lot of moderation at his school.

Many congrats to everyone who has secured a place and thoughts with those that missed their offers. It feels like it has been a brutal year.

AChickenCalledDaal · 13/08/2020 10:17

Sadly DD missed her STEP requirements and it's a no from Cambridge. A levels exceeded expectations but she's not taking much comfort from that right now.

Thecazelets · 13/08/2020 10:30

DS is into Cambridge. Huge relief all round. One of his subjects was downgraded but he still had enough to get in. I have been a long term lurker (I posted just the once when he got his offer I think) but have been too frightened of jinxing it to post anything for the last 7 months. Thanks to everyone for all the information and support over the past year, from which I have been silently benefiting.

So happy for those who got what they needed, and thoughts are with those who didn't. Some heartbreaking stories this morning. I was a narrow Oxford miss myself so I have been there xxx

aibutohavethisusername · 13/08/2020 10:31

AChickenCalledDaal So sorry to hear that.

hobbema · 13/08/2020 10:32

@AChickenCalledDaal, a hug to you from a hurting mum x

ofteninaspin · 13/08/2020 10:36

Oh Chicken - that is so sad to read. It has been such a long journey for STEP applicants. Best wishes to you and your DD.

I am also sorry for every DC who has had a much needed A* moderated downwards Sad.
