Oxbridge 2020 (thread 10) - the path to the first term (just one slight hurdle to clear first)

For better or worse, there is a bit of a bond of mutual experience between parents whose DC go through the Oxbridge application process. Thank you for your companionship so far - and thank you to others who started the earlier threads in this series.

This thread should take us to the start of the first term (whatever form that takes). All welcome here, but for many of us hopefully this will be the place for practical support as we help prepare these peculiar* young adults to spread their wings.

But the first item on the agenda appears to be the small matter of judgement...

*or for those who chose Oxford, very peculiar.

Good luck all. We were where you are now this time last year. How time flies! DD has been supporting some prospective students this year through outreach so nervous for their STEP and A level results. As she said at least STEP based on something a bit more tangible....

aibutohavethisusername · 13/08/2020 04:37

Still routing for all your DC.

Best wishes everyone.

KaptainKaveman · 13/08/2020 06:53

Not long to go now folks......

I did have a very vivid nightmare dream that dd's results had been moderared down by a fair bit. Hope it's not an omen Sad.

Pepermintea · 13/08/2020 06:57

Morning all! Wondering if @AChickenCalledDaal DD has STEP results yet?

FingernailNibbler · 13/08/2020 06:58

Good luck everyone. I've completely flipped from buoyant last night to sweaty nervous Nellie, preparing for CCC and no offer. How can As be downgraded to Cs? (Radio 4 interview). Nails now bloody stumps. Confused

PortusCale · 13/08/2020 07:10

Good luck to all - rooting for your DCs!

DadDadDad · 13/08/2020 07:18

Well that was a terrible night’s sleep. Bleeeuuughhhhh...

No chance of me biting my nails, I had them done yesterday for the first time since lockdown.

SnapSnapDragon · 13/08/2020 07:28

How can time go so slowly I wonder?

Am going to wake DS now, as requested. He was in v optimistic mood last night. As the recipient of his year group's physics prize for the last several years he can't conceive of a scenario in which physics is less than A star. Not sure it works that way..

FingernailNibbler · 13/08/2020 07:33

If your child's course isn't showing on Adjustment page (Cambridge) does that mean it's full because they accepted so many of the current applicants? Confused

Purplepooch · 13/08/2020 07:40

@FingernailNibbler I would think so.

gizmo · 13/08/2020 07:41

I'm not sure @FingernailNibbler. Is there a stage in adjustment where you ring in today to see how the land lies? Worth a call, surely?

Only grim focus on the problem of which clematis might fill a tricky hole in my border got me to sleep at 4am this morning (very sunny spot, next to some bronze fennel, if anyone has any ideas). My hands are currently shaking slightly, making typing difficult.

I really really hope DS hasn't noticed my ridiculous mood.

Good luck everyone!

RoiseCap · 13/08/2020 07:41

I didn’t think Oxford or Cambridge went into Adjustment normally @FingernailNibbler. I thought when they did for the first time last year it wasn’t in the way normal universities do - it was for specific candidates who were given the “offer” in advance.

SeasonFinale · 13/08/2020 07:44

The students who are eligible for Cambridge adjustment will have received an email to tell them they are eligible and asking them to call Cambridge if their grades meet their standard offer.

HuaShan · 13/08/2020 07:44

SnapSnap I'm afraid ds is the same regarding Maths. Just managed to get him to wake up

FingernailNibbler · 13/08/2020 07:47

@RoiseCap I just saw something on TSR and google adjustment page Cambridge and they show which courses are available in adjustment (yes, as you say, only to candidates who were told they were eligible).

DadDadDad · 13/08/2020 07:50

gizmo - I was awake at four too, and ended up doing a maths problem to try to soothe my buzzing brain. Confused

Is it really just ten minutes to go? Shock

Good luck everyone!!!!!! Whatever happens your kids and you have been incredible

SnapSnapDragon · 13/08/2020 07:52

DS has gone back to sleep again! No mention of Track updates on here so maybe they're sticking to 8am this year.

KaptainKaveman · 13/08/2020 07:56

I don't know what this Adjustment is but dd hasn't mentioned anything. Sounds like she's been rejected then...Sad

FalsePerceptions · 13/08/2020 07:58

Well this is horrible isn't it?

Ironoaks · 13/08/2020 08:00

DS is very laid back - eating his breakfast in a leisurely manner, and chuckling at videos on YouTube.

I am not feeling laid back.

doadeer · 13/08/2020 08:02

Has noone else gone into school to get results?
