Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

@Hoghgyni thanks, will have a look.

Newgirls · 11/08/2020 08:37

That article sums up the issues perfectly youthclub.

Interesting that Scottish students have until 7 sept to appeal and unis can hold open places. For the Scottish med students I was reading about on the bbc news that might be a game changer else they face taking a year out to sit their exams ‘properly’. Tight though as the Scottish unis start about a week later!

SnapSnapDragon · 11/08/2020 08:41

DS entirely occupied by campaigning for a new bicycle. Apparently DH promised him a roadbike (not for cycling between lectures, I hope, but for racing etc.) if he got into firm uni. DH tried denying this conversation ever happened but I have to say I believe DS, based on track record. But now DH is saying he doesn't get the bike if he only gets into insurance. Seems pretty unfair to me: it wouldn't be DS's fault if he doesn't make his offer. Anyway, the whole debate is irritating me intensely but it is certainly taking our minds off results.

Interesting to hear that your DS has grown recently @sandybayley. DS has asking whether I'd think he would grow - this is an important consideration when ordering this bike... I don't know: do boys often grow at this age (he's 18 years 5 months)?

Newgirls · 11/08/2020 08:42

No idea of the numbers but that will mean fewer places in clearing and insurance for ALL students while they work it out? What a mess.

Bouledeneige · 11/08/2020 08:45

My DS is studiously ignoring the looming results day. I spoke to him about it yesterday just saying we might be able to find out if he's accepted by his uni before he gets his results email. There is no option to go into school. I have researched vacancies currently available on clearing for Maths and there points requirements so have some back up options.

What are you planning to do on the day? What time will you be checking UCAS and when will you be expecting an email? I don't know any of my DS's passwords so will need to get him up to look - not let him stay in bed till 1!

ThrawnCow · 11/08/2020 08:52

Similar here Boule. Have told DS I'd like some time today to check he has logins for school portal and UCAS. He thought he could do resits in October AND clearing and start in January if he doesn't get the grades on Thursday. Dear god. Need to check if he can activate the clearing button and if he's nominated me to speak to unis on his behalf if necessary. Praying none of my plans will be necessarym

spababe · 11/08/2020 08:52

@Bouledeneige UCAS usually updates about 7:30am although they say 8am officially. I'm going to get DS to check it from 7:30am then we have an appointment at school mid morning to collect results and meet with his tutor. If he gets into his firm Uni all will be well and we will celebrate later in the day. If not, the plan is to phone the firm uni, to ask school to contact firm uni, to try for the BEng (he's applied for the MEng) worst case the foundation course. Very very worst case, sit exam(s) in October and go a year late. Heart is set on the firm uni.

goodbyestranger · 11/08/2020 09:00

DD4 has just reminded me of her passwords and says she's fine with me checking Track independently, since I'm more likely to be up at 7am. I've said that obv I won't go into her room and tell her; she'll just check it herself when she wakes up.

Even if she's got into her firm it won't give many clues as to her grades, because the offer grades are below her predictions by a grade each. But getting in to her firm is the main thing.

It's going to be a busy day at the DfE!

I have to say my current focus is much more on which countries are about to be put on the quarantine list.... I fear that the family holiday for eleven people, planned last Sept, is about to go under.... Big grrrr

Bouledeneige · 11/08/2020 09:07

I asked DS if he has passwords and he said yes but I want him to write them down and I might get us to have a practice run too so I can see how it works. I’ve taken the day off on Thursday in case calling round is required. Does the candidate need to authorise a parent to make the calls then on UCAS? I think we will aim to try at 7.30am on UCAS. I’m not sure when to expect the school email probably 8-ish. We have the option of calling school to make an appointment if things don’t go smoothly but I think I might just get straight into clearing and calling.

My DS is set On his form choice Uni but they did say he could switch to the foundation if he doesn’t make the grades. I think that’s a waste of time since Maths (which he’s applied for) should be a v good grade - so he doesn’t really need to do a foundation in it. It’s just his other grades which might let him down. He’s young though and not very diligent do doing a foundation could be a softer landing after 6 months of not doing a stroke of study and just focusing on gaming and girls,

spababe · 11/08/2020 09:12

@Bouledeneige Unis frown on parents phoning - it's not favourable. The best you can do is phone until they put you through then quickly pass the phone over to your DS.

6 months of not doing a stroke of study and just focusing on gaming and girls

Yep! that's my DS too! Only one girl though and she is lovely.

Peaseblossom22 · 11/08/2020 09:15

To be honest even if you are authorised to speak to the Unis /UCAS unless your dc is overseas or ill they will be reluctant, especially the universities . They expect to talk to the candidate , on the Exeter site it is quite explicit that they will not allocate on first come first served they want to be sure that they are right for the course. We know people who were effectively interviewed on the phone .

specialted · 11/08/2020 09:20

@Bouledeneige sounds like my ds too! @SnapSnapDragon I think boys do continue to grow until late teenage years. Ds is 6'5 and still growing, dh who is 6'6 said he kept growing until he was about 21. I guess it depends when they started puberty?

ThrawnCow · 11/08/2020 09:25

Girls? Just ipad here, no girls.

ThrawnCow · 11/08/2020 09:25

Good info re parents phoning. Thanks.

TheDrsDocMartens · 11/08/2020 09:35

Where is the clearing list? I’ve lost it. Iirc dd2s second choice was there. It offered same grades as first choice so it’s not her insurance but wondering if it’s more flexible if they’ve places in clearing

thesunwillout · 11/08/2020 09:46

DD totally stressed and a few tears last night.
I've unjoined the Facebook group about A level appeals and I only joined yesterday.

Just too involved, kudos to those campaigning their schools, MP, and colleges but mentally there's no room in my brain for more info(worry).

UCAS track is going to blow up Thurs morning isn't it.

I dream that there's a lovely welcome email from her firm university Thursday morning, before we even get onto track (whilst in car) driving to far away college for results.

ofteninaspin · 11/08/2020 09:51

Another vote for Timberland boots!
My DH is from a tall family - and DS is now the tallest in the whole family, including cousins. I doubt any of his "normal" clothes still fit him - he hasn't worn anything other than shorts for months now. I am grateful that his summer job provides temporary distraction during the day.

ofteninaspin · 11/08/2020 09:57

Actually, that's my worry @thesunwillout. DS might not be able to access Track before he needs to leave to collect results and will dither about leaving and the agonising wait will be prolonged....

thesunwillout · 11/08/2020 10:10

Yes, I guess I'm fortunate in that I have to drive the car to get to college, as we live rurally and otherwise it would be about 3 buses.

She can't escape me!!

Railingsohno · 11/08/2020 10:42

@goodbyestranger where are you off to? I am jealous. Hope it works out!

We had a big discussion 2 weeks ago and mapped it all out. Gap year cancelled. What was useful was that he doesn’t want to go to his insurance. His firm offers a foundation year so that’s a good option, also resitting an option too. He’s applied to In defer his firm offer. We’ve looked in Clearing and will also chance an upgrade. The one he wants is email form only. All very stressful! Spoke to his year head and she’s phoning him with the results before 9 which is very nice of her!

We did a drive by of another Clearing possibility last week en route to our holiday last week and ruled it out so that was helpful!

Scottish debacle not good for the nerves! How can they sort this?!

mimbleandlittlemy · 11/08/2020 10:48

DS and I have agreed a 48 hour moratorium on any results discussion. He says if he can't sleep tomorrow night he'll just get up and go to the gym for when it opens at 6am, come back, shower and go in to school for his 9.15 collection time. His is the last class to collect - of course it is! - and most of his friends are in classes that will collect earlier than him, which is a bit tough.

He has already been in touch with the Head of 6th Form saying he might want to go this year rather than keep to his deferral and so he has an appointment time already with the 6th Form Sorters, as I like to think of them, to help him sort if necessary. School has lots of people on duty on Thursday to help them all if they need it.

Beyond that...

Newgirls · 11/08/2020 10:57

DDs fab school have many teachers in on thurs ready to help, all spaced around the buildings. All in at same time but dif desks for their surnames. Parents not allowed. The school really can’t do any more and I hope it works out for the students 👍

idsisatwat · 11/08/2020 11:10

DD gets her results by logging into the college portal. Hopefully that and track will be working on Thursday morning!

thesunwillout · 11/08/2020 11:12

@Newgirls

I read that initially as 'pets not allowed'

Damn it, I thought taking our mad jack Russell girly in would spice things up a bit!

DD wants me to go into building but not sure it's allowed.
They only finally emailed students two nights ago telling them to collect Thurs.

KingscoteStaff · 11/08/2020 11:12

Experienced people....

If DS is rejected by his firm on Track BUT gets his CAGs from school that would have met his offer, then is there any point in him phoning his firm and arguing his case?

Or will the universities already have seen both the CAGs and the moderated grades and would have taken that into account when they pressed reject?
