Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

Is anyone thinking about suggestions vaccinations done before Uni?

DS has had all his childhood and school-age vaccinations, including MenACWY and two doses of the MMR.

If they were starting under normal Fresher conditions, I would have considered paying for him to have the MenB vaccine, but the risk of catching meningitis at university will be much smaller this year, due to the measures in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

I don't know if this winter's flu vaccine will be widely available before they start. Last autumn, many GP surgeries didn't receive supplies until November.

Ironoaks · 26/07/2020 11:25

Divoc2020 No new changes, just poor reporting on the results of the consultation from a few weeks ago.

Hoghgyni · 26/07/2020 11:50

I called our GP surgery a few months ago and checked that she had had everything she could possibly have. She was given the Men B jab as part of an Oxford Uni research project looking a possible herd immunity in certain high risk environments.

MillicentMartha · 26/07/2020 12:29

I took DS1 to the GP to get his MenACWY just before he left for uni, but it then rolled out into schools and DS2 and DS3 had it at school.

That Telegraph article is just rehashing everything we have learnt ourselves on this thread and elsewhere but putting the most negative spin on it. It’s nothing new at all. Makes me cross.

@Eve

DS has a job in a pub as kitchen porter, works 4-10 most days, which suits him as it means he can lie in til noon! Hmm

Is anyone thinking about suggestions vaccinations done before Uni?

Freshers flu is a thing and last year mumps was spreading in a few unis.

DS took part in a meningitis research trial so needed a jab for that so at least that’s up to date.

Dd Was hoping to get hpv (she missed school ones) and Rubella ss was found not to be immune just before lockdown. Assume it would be mmr again. Not sure how to organise it though.

Do students in Scotland qualify for free prescriptions, dentist etc?

KingscoteStaff · 27/07/2020 22:50

Have I just defrauded the NHS?

I picked up DS’s prescription this afternoon and ticked the ‘18 and in full-time education’ box.

Do I need to go back and pay?

choirmumoftwo · 27/07/2020 23:03

Prescriptions are free until 19th birthday if in full time education. You haven't defrauded anyone!

BackforGood · 27/07/2020 23:05

In my understanding, it is until the end of the academic year when they turn 18. So they need to get all illnesses over before 31st Aug Smile

choirmumoftwo · 27/07/2020 23:18

Definitely grr until 19th birthday. I checked just last week for DD.

choirmumoftwo · 27/07/2020 23:19

Free obviously! Bad spelling.

JulesJules · 28/07/2020 06:57

I was wondering this about dental check ups - I've got appointments for me and both DDs early in September. D1 is 18 and won't have started at university - will I have to pay for her? I'm wondering if I should try and bring it forward a week or two.

LIZS · 28/07/2020 08:11

In England it is under 19 and in ft education. However Scotland differs but not sure if non Scottish students qualify. Dd is due a dental check up but ours has not yet rescheduled appointments so looking unlikely.

ofteninaspin · 28/07/2020 08:52

Our local dentist hasn’t started rescheduling appointments either. Very much hoping they do so before DS (potentially) starts uni.

specialted · 28/07/2020 10:02

Ds got offered an appt in Oct for dentist rescheduled from June but he moved it to December when he's home for Christmas .

thesunwillout · 28/07/2020 14:35

I thought full time education only meant further education not higher?

MillicentMartha · 28/07/2020 15:30

@thesunwillout, yes, just further education not higher. Students don’t get free prescriptions or dental treatment as far as I know.

I'm assuming our 18 yr olds on this thread are all waiting to go or not go to university.
So other posters are saying up to 19, so that would include part of the 1st yr of uni?
Till they turn 19?

From what I've read then you fill in an HC1 form.

Dd's looking to go to Cardiff, I think all scripts are free in Wales?

I've had this conversation on here before lol. Still confused 😂

choirmumoftwo · 28/07/2020 16:35

Scripts are free in Wales if registered with a Welsh GP, although not if you try to get it from an English pharmacy. Definitely free up to 19 in England if still in full-time education which includes university. There's a tool on NHSBA website you can use to check eligibility.

JufusMum · 28/07/2020 16:36

DD is not 18 until Friday, I’ve been frantically trying to get a dental appointment and an eye test for her before her birthday but to no avail!

BackforGood · 28/07/2020 16:38

That's my understanding and experience @MillicentMartha (this one is dc3, so have had students for the last 6 years, and dentists and prescriptions needed to be paid for once they were students hence them stopping going

JulesJules · 28/07/2020 16:45

Have just phoned my dentist - free checkup up to age 19, if in full time education, and I said does that include university, and she said yes. In any case her check up will be before she goes off to university in October.

BackforGood · 28/07/2020 17:04

Fair play, then that is most up to date information - unless it is open to interpretation surgery to surgery ?

Either way, our practice isn't open yet so dd's check up booked for August won't be happening

MillicentMartha · 28/07/2020 17:56

My DS1 and DS2 have Autumn birthdays, so hit 19 almost straight away, so I wouldn’t have realised.

OP posts:
cinammonbuns · 28/07/2020 18:42

It’s free till the day they turn 19.

thesunwillout · 30/07/2020 10:07

Just wondering, without giving too much away, is anyone else's dc finding it really tough at the moment.

Emotions coming up, previous bad life experiences (re ex, the father ) surfacing.
We've had two nights of tears, old painful stuff relived. Just feel that it's all been so much, all round.

Through previous exp of dc mental health I know we have to go down, work thru, talk and slowly get back up.
If not exactly like this, has anyone been feeling down, agitated, stressed.
I noticed we were bickering alot last couple weeks.

I'm not surprised, but wondered what it's been like for others.
