Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

Annoyed as the school persuaded us to get rid of my sons overly optimistic first choice. With a view to reapplying if his grades were better as he’s having a gap year. I now wish we’d just gone for it. 🤯

Railingsohno · 19/06/2020 13:49

Ah ok, I see. What a minefield.

Lightuptheroom · 19/06/2020 14:22

@Railingsohno, did he apply for a place there ? Is he still having a gap year? If so then he can apply for 2021

Monkey2001 · 19/06/2020 14:30

@Railingsohno I think it is less likely that they would have made a deferred offer unconditional. If he would consider going this year if it meant going to the preferred university, I would advise him to contact them and find out how flexible they are. There is an expectation that next year will be more competitive, depending on how many defer this year.

mumsneedwine · 19/06/2020 14:35

Not sure anyone is letting deferrals happen at the moment. Seems to be if you don't want to go this year then you'll have to reapply. But worth a try

Oratory1 · 19/06/2020 15:09

Brum CS are considering referral requests from 1st Aug onwards (presumably when they are sure of their firms and insurances) but they have confirmed they would only give deferrals on achievement of standard offer which makes sense. DS first choice is to defer but will keep an open mind as on results day he may have to decide whether to go now or resit.

He’s firmed another place and has an insurance too but he did love this other uni but it was ABB typical offer and his predictions were BCC so the school said probably to drop it and reapply with actual grades if he did better.

He’s determined to have a gap year

Railingsohno · 19/06/2020 15:32

There’s no way he’ll get ABB. he might pull if ABC if he’s very lucky but no more.

DuckyMcDuck · 19/06/2020 15:37

Warwick accommodation is now open but it's not first come.....
Apparently, it's done by a ballot after the closing date of 31st July.

When you apply, you write a few words about yourself and then after the random allocations to each halls, they then try and match similar people together.

Shimy · 19/06/2020 16:52

It would be interesting to know what the usual quotas are for deferments and how this years quotas have been affected by the pandemic.

Newgirls · 19/06/2020 17:01

Railing if he gets the ABC might be worth him calling his first choice on results day? You never know - they might have a spare spot.

Monkey2001 · 19/06/2020 17:02

@DuckyMcDuck that sounds a bit like St Andrews. Will be more complicated this year if they are trying to juggle accommodation preferences, personalities and subject bubbles!

Peaseblossom22 · 19/06/2020 17:10

Ds seems to be stuck in an online vortex with St Andrews accommodation. It keeps asking for his user name but when he puts it in it says someone already has set it up for that reference . Which is probably him yesterday but it won’t let him put done code in or something . Anyway have decided to leave him to it, my instinct is always to jump in but that’s actually probably the worst thing to do as then we end up arguing.

Anyone else feeling like they are constantly walking on eggshells with everyone else in the house at the moment but no one seems to pay me the same compliment! Just want to run away and get some peace Hmm

errorofjudgement · 19/06/2020 17:25

Oh definitely!! This afternoon the 3 DC all went out together, first time in forever that there was just DH and I in the house - I did try to encourage DH to go too but the safari park didn’t tempt him Grin

Monkey2001 · 19/06/2020 17:46

@Peaseblossom22 DS had problems too, I think we might have ended up using Firefox instead of Safari, can't quite remember what the problems were. Also had a problem uploading the photo, may have solved it by converting to JPEG.

specialted · 19/06/2020 18:00

@choirmumoftwo what is your DD going to study at Lancaster? Ds is doing history and Spanish. It would be funny if they were in the same accommodation!

Lipsofchicken · 19/06/2020 18:58

With Gavin’s announcement this afternoon I think any Y13s thinking of taking a gap year, could earn £££ providing GCSE tuition. He has pledged £1 billion for 1:1 catch up lessons.

Thank you. Do you think worth it given he’s deferring anyway?
Hoghgyni · 19/06/2020 19:56

Unfortunately Lips that only works out at around £80-£120 per head and only £350m is for tutors. Schools also gave to contribute around £12 per session from their own budget.

choirmumoftwo · 19/06/2020 20:04

@specialted she's studying MORSE - maths, operational research, statistics and economics. Takes after her father! DS is doing a music degree - that's more my bag!

Lipsofchicken · 19/06/2020 20:17

Hoghgyni - that’s very interesting to hear. Would you mind telling me where you got that info from (I’m a teacher) thank you

Empra123 · 19/06/2020 21:17

May I join in? I have 2 DDs going in September. They're twins but ended up a year apart as one took a year out between GCSEs and A levels due to ill health. She's hoping to study nursing at York and has applied to Halifax college. Her twin did A levels last year and started at Exeter reading classics. However she deferred at Christmas as she couldn't cope with shared accommodation (autism doesn't make life easy for her). So she's applied for a studio flat on campus and given her needs she should get one. She's also changing course slightly to include Chinese. Weird languages clearly run in the family as I did my degree in Russian and Serbo-Croat many years ago.

Newgirls · 19/06/2020 21:47

Railing - always worth a phone call nothing to lose.

Welcome empra!
