Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

@MillicentMartha you can grate onions or buy a mandolin with a guard

@torydeathdrug @errorofjudgement Great news about Southampton as my DS2 is hoping to start there this Autumn. Interesting to hear about the housing situation for 2nd and 3rd years as well. My DS1 is at Cardiff and student housing is both plentiful and cheap but friends tell me this is not the case at all Unis.

Thank for the Warwick info.

Do you have a link please @MissJaneLockland?

I am still seeing the message that it's not open yet

Railingsohno · 18/06/2020 18:27

@Monkey2001

People do say they put on weight in catered halls. St A is a cooked breakfast and 2 X 3 course meals/day apart from weekend evenings.
A bit of weight on might not be a bad thing to cope with that wind straight from the Arctic 🙈 🥶 Whoever has a child going to St As - can I suggest some very warm clothes! Beautiful place but bloody freezing when the wind blows!

Railing - I’ve bought thermals, jumper and new jacket for dd and with the cloak should be fine 🥶

Folks. Just chatting to my friend who is a professor at SOAS. Unless they get the student enrolments this August they will be closing this year.

Whats SOAS?
Bouledeneige · 18/06/2020 20:22

Sorry - School of Oriental & African Studies, London University, close to UCL. Its not just a specialist school it does international law, human rights, environmental studies etc.

I've heard that a 17-20 universities are teetering on the edge of collapse - mostly the newer more vocational universities.

MillicentMartha · 18/06/2020 20:43

So sad about SOAS. It’s one of a kind and really respected.

OP posts:
ragged · 18/06/2020 20:57

ah come on @Bouledeneige, don't tease like that. Which universities are in such precarious straits? Was SOAS in the group (seems like would not be, since not vocational)

Railingsohno · 18/06/2020 21:01

That’s really sad. Is that just for this coming year?

Shimy · 18/06/2020 21:10

@MillicentMartha Had to give a whoop for the reference to, 'UCCA' form Grin.

Divoc2020 · 18/06/2020 21:39

Oh yes, I am getting constant eyerolls from DS for calling it UCCA!

Lightuptheroom · 18/06/2020 21:51

@MillicentMartha better not tell him we didn't fill our forms in on a computer!

torydeathdrug · 18/06/2020 21:52

dd recommends this as a student cookbook (I agree!), she's cooked loads from it

www.amazon.co.uk/Take-One-Tin-Lola-Milne/dp/0857836145/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=take+one+can&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1592513382&sr=8-1

Soton have said July for their accommodation allocations, she'd really like to hear something soon!

torydeathdrug · 18/06/2020 21:55

I remember hand writing my UCCA form then buying a postal order to send it off with ... those were the days ;)
