Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

Thank you @Divoc2020, that's reassuring.

Hoghgyni · 10/06/2020 14:45

Oneteen DD had the same, but opposite issue with mechanics. There was a general assumption that everyone taking maths was also studying mechanics in physics or FM. Her other subjects were humanities with no numerical content. Such a shame that the only maths mock she took before lockdown was a mechanics paper. If it was pure or stats she would have got her usual A/A*, but such is life.

Oneteen · 10/06/2020 16:20

@Hoghgyni... Most of Dds earlier Physics A level papers were heavily bias towards mechanics...she was getting very high marks with one teacher and the complete opposite with the other... We found a tutor (not a teacher but an Oxford engineering graduate) to go through mechanics with Dd and after 3 sessions she'd cracked it... It was just the pace was too fast for her in a classroom environment....dd needs to really understand what she's studying to get it.

Hope your dd gets her grades... I'm sure she will..

Hoghgyni · 10/06/2020 16:29

I think it's in the genes. I hated the mechanics side, despite taking physics as well, but loved the rest. I aren't tell her though that it's all my fault!

Hoghgyni · 10/06/2020 16:29

Aren't = daren't

Oneteen · 10/06/2020 17:02

@Hoghgyni.... I don't know where Dd gets her interest in science from.... My family are all Maths orientated and so was her dad although he also loves English Literature /Classics(extremely odd for a Train Driver Trainer who loves the works of Thomas Hardy etc.).

Interesting that Dd realises now she probably should have dropped a set in Maths to go at a slower pace she started off in set 1 and dropped to set 2 but would have thrived in set 3. ..its all about pace and complete understanding.

Just wondered how many DC are considering deferring? Dd very keen to start in October...

AChickenCalledDaal · 10/06/2020 20:02

DD is keen to start this autumn. She wants to get on with it and isn't one for massive social events so feels that she'll probably be able to cope with however things are organised. One of her friends is seriously considering withdrawing from his Oxford offer and taking a year out. Oxford unlikely to let him.

TheDrsDocMartens · 10/06/2020 20:22

@BackforGood

Nothing to do with this thread, but I am wondering how on earth schools can fund A-level groups of 5, or just 2 ??!?
State school here. Sixth form in a school. Nearest A level French apart from this would be an hour by train.
Heffapotamus · 11/06/2020 07:37

Hope you don't mind me joining you. I'm another with a D.C. heading to St Andrews - unconditional offer 😁

Monkey2001 · 11/06/2020 10:15

Welcome @Heffapotamus ! That is 5 for the St Andrews on here now. Smile

Newgirls · 11/06/2020 11:11

Welcome! We can have a mini sub group at some point, my dd has a conditional offer so still all up in the air. But hopeful 👍

Alittlewornout · 11/06/2020 11:13

Hi @Heffapotamus! Ladies I have resurrected the previous St Andrew's thread incase there are issues that we may find helpful to discuss but may understandably not be of interest to others. What subject is your DC going to study @Heffapotamus

JufusMum · 11/06/2020 12:54

Is anyone’s DC heading to USW Pontypridd ?

Justyou · 11/06/2020 14:40

Anyone’s Dc heading to York?

Heffapotamus · 11/06/2020 15:14

Thanks for the welcome 😁

DC is off to study Theoretical Physics.

Lightuptheroom · 11/06/2020 16:24

@Justyou - yes, mine hopes so!

Justyou · 11/06/2020 16:29

What do they want to study? It’s really worrying isn’t it not knowing when it will actually happen and they have worked so hard for this.

Lightuptheroom · 11/06/2020 16:39

@Justyou , hoping to do History

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/06/2020 16:59

DD also potentially heading to St Andrews for maths. It's her insurance offer, but quite a likely outcome judging by the way STEP is going right now!

Justyou · 11/06/2020 17:38

Have they applied for accommodation yet? I’m hoping the ‘bubbles’ if that’s the way it goes doesn’t affect their choices too much.

Lightuptheroom · 11/06/2020 17:49

@Justyou yes, allocation is made after results, I don't know what he put down other than definitely en suite self-catering

Justyou · 11/06/2020 17:54

@Lightuptheroom same here luckily we got the acceptance visit done just before lockdown

Hoghgyni · 11/06/2020 17:56

York is DD's insurance place as it was the only one offering lower grades than her first choice. Her heart really isn't in it though, so results day could be a double disaster.

thesunwillout · 11/06/2020 18:04

Hog, why's that?

Hoghgyni · 11/06/2020 20:08

We love York as a city and visit regularly, but the course and campus are in complete contrast to her first choice. In the pre-Covid world I think she would have been willing to compromise, but after lockdown, I think she would struggle with the new style uni experience for a course which doesn't offer what she really wanted when the others on her UCAS form did. If she doesn't meet her firm offer and only gets the grades for her insurance, she will have been given grades which are much worse than the predicted grades on her UCAS form, so would rather rethink.
