Ds would like to go and get his stuff, I am finding it hard to put him off, he argues that the lockdown is likely to get stricter...

Yes Ds came home 2 weeks ago for Easter Holiday then everything went into lockdown. It’s non essential travel and breakdown companies won’t get you home if something happens so his stuff is staying where it is 200 miles from home until the Uni tells us we have to come and get it. I think the majority of students will be in the same situation.

Janaih · 30/03/2020 19:04

Yes, dds stuff in central London. Not a chance I'm getting it anytime soon.

qwertyuiop100 · 30/03/2020 19:08

Yes, we're one side of the country with him, and his stuff is at the other. God knows when we are going to get it. We also have DD here who came home on a holiday. Whilst here, her work implemented home working so she decided to stay in our rural area, rather than go back to the city she lives in. Her job is due to end in August, so hope restrictions will be a bit looser then so we can get her stuff too.

cinders15 · 30/03/2020 19:11

Yup - third year in Winchester
She wanted to go get stuff - I said we can duplicate!!!
Contract ends in July ..... 🤷‍♀️

YellowPrimroses · 30/03/2020 19:11

Yes dd's stuff is hundreds of miles away

Serin · 30/03/2020 21:10

Yes, luckily his laptop is here.
The moaning about his bike tho.....Hmm

SeaToSki · 30/03/2020 21:21

My DS stuff is in his halls in the UK and he is home in the USA. There is no way he is getting it until term starts back up and he goes back. He just came home with carry on bags as we had to move quick before the borders shut.

daisypond · 30/03/2020 21:23

Yes. My student child is at home with us in London - in the worst borough - and their stuff is in their student house over 200 miles away.

MarchingFrogs · 30/03/2020 23:43

DD still has stuff 160+ miles away in her Unite hall in Birmingham. Residents have been given the opportunity to be released from the contract and be refunded / not have the third term's payment taken if they let them know by the end of next week. The management have confirmed that belongings can stay, but should be collected as soon as it is legally possible to do so.

choirmumoftwo · 31/03/2020 00:46

Yes, DS came home before lockdown but most of his things are 300+ miles away in private rented house which he needs to be out of by 28th June.
Hoping we'll be able to move him out by then but there may be some leeway as next years tenants probably won't move in on 1st July!
Just taking it one day at a time.

HoldMyLobster · 31/03/2020 01:12

Yes - DD booked her flight on the Saturday afternoon and left Sunday afternoon so not much time to pack. She did put as much stuff in boxes as possible but it's all in her room. The university have said not to worry about it for now. It's not like anyone else is going to be living there.

Knotaknitter · 31/03/2020 08:37

DS brought his personal things home but his bedding and the contents of the kitchen are still there. They will be staying there until things ease up enough for us to collect them.

It doesn't feature highly on the list of things I need to worry about - so many people will be in the same situation. Personally I would not go at this time.

VioletCharlotte · 31/03/2020 08:40

My DS managed to bring most of his stuff home thankfully, but all his kitchen stuff is still there.

Has anyone heard anything about rent payments for the summer term? I'm assuming we're still going to have to pay, even though it's very unlikely there'll be going back.

Chemenger · 31/03/2020 08:40

Us too DD brought one (small) car load home but her bike and other stuff is still on the other side of the country. It can wait.

Potentialmadcatlady · 31/03/2020 08:44

My DD stuff is a ferry ride away. I told her to bring home the things most important to her that she could carry and leave the rest as packed up as she could. I’m really concerned about what we are going to do about her rent. Grant doesn’t cover it and she has had to give up her student weekend job which she used to help me pay it. I literally don’t have the money to pay it all and have no idea what to do

Knotaknitter · 31/03/2020 09:47

Unite accommodation - check their website as you can ask to not pay the last term's rent

Janus · 31/03/2020 09:49

Yes, my daughter’s uni house is only an hour away but we won’t go and get it until the lockdown ends.

Janus · 31/03/2020 09:52

Yes we will have to pay rent. We’ve had that discussion with the renting agency, no budge, even though rent includes bills and no one is using electricity etc, have to pay the whole lot. We’ve signed a contract so we have to pay and landlords have to pay mortgage etc so it’s just all unfortunate.
I know it’s not ideal but there are many, many supermarket jobs going, could your daughter get one there?

lamppostdog · 31/03/2020 09:54

Yes, we're less than an hour away so not too bad but no info on next term or what rent we have to pay (uni halls)

Chemenger · 31/03/2020 12:54

We’re only an hour away do as soon as there is a break in the lockdown we’ll make a dash for it.

Potentialmadcatlady · 31/03/2020 13:03

We are in full shielding so my daughter could not continue to live here and work at the same time. My other child is too high risk. She is also at risk due to inhalers she is on so no work will accept her even if I let her. The whole thing is a nightmare. She is v likely to lose her whole degree over this as she needs face to face hours to move forward and financially deferring is going to make finances untenable.
But she is safe and at home so I guess things could be much worse

Decorhate · 31/03/2020 13:15

Yes ds came home on the train as soon as they announced they were moving lectures online as his flatmates were all leaving (several are foreign students).

I am kicking myself that we did not go and get him & his stuff then (less than 2 weeks ago...) But we thought it would be something to do over Easter. Since then his uni have said they won’t charge rent for next term if they empty their rooms by the end of what would have been the Easter break. But I doubt the travel ban will have been lifted by then.

Takeittotheboss · 31/03/2020 16:01

Yes, my dd's stuff is in a private rented house 150 miles away for the forseeable future. And she has been applying everywhere around to try and get work, but to no avail so far. Think this could lead to a double-tier student population, between those renting from universities (potentially being well in pocket) and those renting privately (expected to pay, but no jobs).

shockthemonkey · 31/03/2020 16:20

Yes, my DS's stuff is in Beijing while he's in Taipei. He is due home early June as long as the situation in Taiwan remains stable and flights in and out are allowed to continue.

It's better than the other way around (DS in Beijing and stuff in Taipei)... but still, it'll be a logistical nightmare when he comes home.

bevelino · 31/03/2020 18:08

My dd’s belonging are in Italy and we’ll go and fetch it all when the travel restrictions are lifted.
