Ds would like to go and get his stuff, I am finding it hard to put him off, he argues that the lockdown is likely to get stricter...

DS2 has been asked to clear his things by the 18th, but as there are only a few kitchen items (which were already 3rd hand) we are not rushing. DH and DS cleaned his room and all the communal, areas of the flat before they left so we may or may not go back depending on government advice.

After fretting for days about this, finally found out that ds had had an email that said NOT to return to collect belongings. Hmm

bigchris · 03/04/2020 16:06

@Takeittotheboss has she tried supermarkets , and care work ? Thats where the work is currently, or delivery drivers

Takeittotheboss · 03/04/2020 16:41

Thanks Chris she doesn't drive and no public transport here, so all quite tricky. Has managed to get a zero hour contract at nearest shop but no actually work as yet!

We've just been told if the room is empited and keys handed in by the end of the month then we won't need to pay the summer instalment, but I can't see us being out of lockdown by the end of the month to be able to go and collect everything? Or can this count as essential travel?

Janaih · 03/04/2020 17:20

Dd just received email. No rent is due for the lockdown period. She can return after lockdown period and continue rent, return to empty room and hand in key or send key in post and donate any decent contents to charity.

minesawine · 04/04/2020 11:20

NTU have stopped 3rd term rent payments, which is great. I am still waiting for a date from them for him to collect his things. I think it will be in July.

VioletCharlotte · 04/04/2020 12:25

My DS has an email yesterday saying he doesn't have to be rent next term which is a relief! I think they're meant to be sending everyone a time slot to go and collect their things. We only live half an hour away so it should be ok. I'm not sure how those who live further afield will manage this, it doesn't seem sensible to be making long journeys to do this.

MarchingFrogs · 04/04/2020 20:28

DD has had an update from Unite to say that they expect belongings to be collected within a fortnight of travel restrictions being lifted.

ListeningQuietly · 04/04/2020 20:34

And private rental landlords are still collecting full -extortionate-- rent and deposits for tenancies that start in July Sad

Xenia · 04/04/2020 21:02

Lockdown might well be lifted and they go back for next term - we just don't know yet.

There are quite a lot of myths out there about who can go out etc. Always read the legislation including this www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/350/regulation/6/made which says "(l)to move house where reasonably necessary;"

i have the regulations printed out in my handbag with my business card in case police stop me when out on work matters.

PurpleBlueAnemone · 04/04/2020 21:21

I started a thread about this and general advice was to wait till June and hope lockdown restrictions had been lifted slightly.
Now DD is saying she wants to move back into her student house so she can be with boyfriend and get her rents worth of house. I think this is a bad idea.

CherryPavlova · 04/04/2020 21:27

Yes. It’s all sitting in Exeter. When we can, we’ll have a couple of days there doing a nice supper party in lieu of graduation and empty the house. Meanwhile we’re paying a lot of rent to store belongings.

ListeningQuietly · 04/04/2020 21:43

Xenia
I'm planning the same as I'm out on site a lot over teh coming months

  • printout of the relevant .gov.uk page with teh relevant paragraph highlighted and a hard copy of the front page of every engagement letter

if you can prove WHY you are where you are
and that you are being sensible about social distancing & isolating
I really cannot see any problems

as UK policing is on a "by consent" basis

Catmaiden · 05/04/2020 12:17

My DS this week has had an email saying clear uni owned room and hand in keys by end of summer term, if not done before he left. Not being charged rent for summer term. But they will email if things change. I collected him just before lockdown started, he had packed a lot of stuff up but not bedding, kitchen contents etc. I asked him to load as much as possible and I could have brought it all away then (estate car) but he refused to add more than he had packed 🤦 so it's stuck 250 miles away now, for the foreseeable future, which he's not happy about. But that's not my problem, I did warn him! 🤷

Xenia · 05/04/2020 13:12

One of my son's has a housemate in their flat in Bristol who has stayed there with his girl friend who moved in for lock down so at least they are getting some benefit from the rent everyone has paid and also presumably keeping an eye on my son's stuff which is left at the place. I am sure my sons will assess by 20 April when Bristol's next term starts where they will be depending on lock down etc

HoldMyLobster · 05/04/2020 17:00

DD's college is saying not to worry till early June, then if necessary they will box stuff up and ship it. I think it's more likely at that point we'll just pay someone to box it up and move it to storage - there are various organisations offering that as a service. If worst comes to worst we have friends and colleagues there who will help.

It's 1700 miles away so we're not going there to do it any time soon.
