UEA (2019) dealing with the unexpected and on to 2nd Year

New thread for the parents of 2019 freshers. Thank you all for sticking around!
At the start of the year we never would have guessed the topics that are currently being discussed in this page but I'm grateful we still have each other to help navigate our way through this with our DC.
With the emptying of 1st year rooms seemingly on hold for many until the end of lockdown our thoughts will soon turn to 2nd year accommodation and whether term is likely to start as normal in September.

@Itscoldouthere your doggie will feel the cold in the snow. Whippets do get cold. I'm sure a warm coat will help. That's good you went for a long walk and have found the place to go off lead (when you are allowed)

@justasking111 are you in wales then?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/10/2020 08:59

@justasking111 that is grim and really draconian. We would have laughed our heads off this time last year if someone had suggested searching the trains for errant travellers would come to pass. It's like scenes from war films :-(.

Pity about your dog not being allowed off lead in the wood yet @Itscoldouthere but November will be with us soon enough. It sounds as if you had a lovely long walk anyway. I have always wondered about pets adapting to different climes. Our cats (the ones we've had since they were kittens) have never come across snow yet.

I don't envy you the Canadian winters though - when do the temperatures really plummet? Are you likely to enjoy a snowy Christmas? That is a big plus.

sluj · 26/10/2020 11:40

Lockdown would suddenly become more magical and bearable if we all had snowy scenes to look out on !
We went to visit the 2 DS on Sunday and had a lovely meal in the Georgian Townhouse, if anyone is looking for recommendations. Hope you are all ok

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/10/2020 11:51

Totally agree @sluj - mind you if it does snow 'down south' East Anglia is the most likely place for it to happen, don't you think?

Will bear the Georgian Townhouse in mind for future visits. Thanks for the recommendation.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/10/2020 12:51

Nope...every winter I watch snow in Surrey and other places on tv and we have none here in east anglia. When we had "the beast from the east" it was the first time my youngest (now 11) could remember seeing anything more than a dusting of snow. We did have a bit more when he was about a year old as I can remember pulling him along in the sledge on our dog walk. Not sure the lack of snow is a good thing or bad thing. I don't mind it for a few days. Then I've had enough.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/10/2020 12:57

@justasking111 I asked if you were in Wales because it sounds a nightmare. I was going to say will the whole country go the same way...but wales seem a lot more strict.

Itscoldouthere · 26/10/2020 13:25

I'm pretty sure we'll have a white Christmas here, snow can start from late October (although more usually starts early December) and lasts through till March!
I can't imagine how we are going to negotiate the dog/snow/cold/living in an apartment, when it gets seriously cold, and it really does get cold, Montreal is the coldest city in North America, but there are lots of dogs here so I presume we will find a way, but it will involve dog shoes and coats 😂
It sounds like things are a bit crazy in Wales, I really don't know what to think is for the best anymore, seeing the UK numbers (I watch the 10pm news here at 5pm most days) the numbers seem so big again, but I just don't know what's for the best anymore, I feel like I'm just living in a little bubble, but I expect lots of people feel like that now.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/10/2020 13:27

Hello all-just checking in.

DD having no F2F teaching despite being told she would before she went. Slightly frustrating as she is doing History and Politics and needs debate and discussion.

She is very anxious at the thought of not coming home for Christmas. She thinks she will come early December as she can be online here and is finding, once the novelty has worn off, it is all getting a bit boring. She loves house and house mates but the restrictions do make it much less fun. Which I know is sort of the point Grin

DD has also had one COVID test so far at UEA.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/10/2020 21:44

@Itscoldouthere that made me smile about your dog needing shoes. He will indeed 😂

I don't know what's for the best anymore re covid either. Seems no end to people wanting lockdown, but others no lockdown, then they wanted schools to open, then start saying schools should close, students went back to university and now people say they shouldn't have gone back. But if they hadn't gone back they'd have complained that they wanted an education, it's the same with so many things. Sometimes it feels like there's never going to be an end.

Yes am in Wales but I believe it is no better for parents getting their children back to Scotland.

justasking111 · 26/10/2020 22:58

Had a zoom chat with friends tonight, the uni. mums say they are coming home for xmas come hell or high water.

icanbewhatiwant · 27/10/2020 08:06

@justasking111 I don't think they'll stop students returning home for Christmas. They might get told to stay in their houses or flats for 2 weeks first. That's not a bad idea, especially those visiting grandparents/vulnerable relatives.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/10/2020 16:42

Ds came home for a few hours today. It was great to see him. DH has bought another car for him to use. The older one he had will now be used by ds2 as he is 17 next month. Ds was thrilled with a newer car. He's always been mad on cars, but ended up with a brown Corsa. It had such low mileage that dh bought it, nothing wrong with it really...it's just an awful colour. So the grey fiesta went down very well. He's so fortunate to have a nice car to use, when I think of the car I had at his age....it was a 22 year VW beetle. I loved it though.

Ds is very happy in his student house. He's getting on well with everyone. They even have a rota for the cleaning! His gf stays over sometimes, so they obviously ignore the rule of 6. Ds and housemates aren't going out to eat or to pubs etc. Just staying home playing card/board/pc games. I think alcohol is involved too. They have 3 cars between them (house of 6) so they take it in turns to drive to Eaton park to park the car and walk to UEA. It's free parking and a 10 min walk. Ds has one f2f lecture and one lab session a week. Lots of live seminars online too. He seems to be enjoying it. His gf has no f2f for her English course so isn't so happy.

Ds son drove his gf up to Blakeney one day and they had an enjoyable afternoon. So that's great.

So I'm pleased to see he's settled and happy. He said they haven't discussed what they are doing for Christmas yet and whether they are going home to family. I'm assuming that means he's considering spending Christmas there. If that is what he wants and as long as he's happy then so be it. But I'm sure he will be home.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 30/10/2020 18:00

Good to hear that your DS is thriving @icanbewhatiwant.

juicy0 · 31/10/2020 19:17

What will your DS/DD do from Thursday? Are they staying at uni for the month long lockdown or coming home ?

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 31/10/2020 19:56

Ds would definitely rather stay where he is. I'm assuming f2f will continue still.

boys3 · 31/10/2020 20:31

Fairly sure DS2 staying. Halloween party in his house tonight - residents only I hasten to add. Most impressed by their pumpkin decorating. Smile I thought my effort was good, but can now see I didn’t make a real effort. However none of his housemates were featured on the Saturday Kitchen insta feed today so I’ll be gracious about thingsGrin

juicy0 · 31/10/2020 21:01

@icanbewhatiwant what subject is there f2f in?

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 31/10/2020 22:12

Ds is biology. He is in twice a week...one f2f lecture and one lab session.

Just found this on the latest guidance

UEA (2019) dealing with the unexpected and on to 2nd Year
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/11/2020 10:18

DS not so much as mentioned coming home ahead of the lockdown but I'm pleased as students really shouldn't be unless they are struggling with physical or mental health.

I think this is a very unfortunate 'grown-up' lesson to learn when they should be allowed to be young and carefree but these are not normal times Sad.

Finallyjoinedmnet · 02/11/2020 18:02

Hi all, been following this page for a while, it’s been really helpful. My daughter sent me this message she received from UEA today wondered if you’d all seen it

Dear students,

Since the Prime Minister’s announcement on Saturday (31 October) night regarding the impending national lockdown in England, I have been considering with the Executive Team how we can continue to fulfil our commitment to providing you with the best possible teaching and research experience.

Universities are being asked to stay open and the advice issued by the government to all students is that they should only return home at the end of term for Christmas. It is clear to me that we have a responsibility to help you continue your studies while in Norwich and to be able to benefit from the range of teaching and learning opportunities available.

Colleagues across UEA have worked really hard to provide a Covid-secure environment for teaching and learning, and our academics will continue to offer in-person face-to-face interaction where this is possible across all subject areas. We have already been more cautious than many other universities by establishing a 2m rule PLUS face coverings in our teaching spaces.

We believe that a blended approach including a range of in-person and online learning is most effective and that in-person activity is important to student experience and wellbeing. Whether for foundation and first years who have left home for the first time, our international students who have moved across the world to be with us, returning students who have looked forward so much to coming back to UEA to continue study, postgraduate and postgraduate research students or those on professional programmes facing the demands of practice learning, we recognise the importance of providing opportunities for all to establish a sense of belonging, make friends with others on their course or have the chance to interact in person with lecturers, supervisors or fellow students.

Meanwhile, we know that our research is essential to our mission and we wish to keep as much of that going through lockdown as is feasible. Laboratory and library access are crucial to much of this research as is the opportunity for face-to-face supervision for our postgraduate research students, where desired and safe.

We are fortunate as a university to have a well-developed asymptomatic testing programme and would strongly encourage students to access this for one-off or repeat testing.

I will continue to review the national guidance and adapt accordingly to support the UK’s response to this global pandemic.

I know that some students will feel anxious about the period ahead for the UK and the uncertainty that may bring. Our student services stand ready as ever to support you and if you have any concerns please do make contact with them. I know many of you will be concerned for other students, friends or those you care about, and we will look at what other support the university can provide.

I have been incredibly impressed by how we have worked together as a community over recent times to continue the important work of the University and how committed all of our students have been to pursuing their study in such difficult times. These are complex challenges we face together and, as Vice-Chancellor, I am grateful for your support.

With kind regards,

David

Welcome @Finallyjoinedmnet and that's really useful to have posted the UEA VC's message.

icanbewhatiwant · 02/11/2020 20:00

@Finallyjoinedmnet thanks. Ds never passes anything on to me.

Itscoldouthere · 02/11/2020 20:08

@Finallyjoinedmnet thank you for posting, very good to read that UEA are doing their best to carry on as usual.
I was worried the DS might end up all alone in his house, but they are obviously trying to support students to stay.
