A bit of a rubbish situation all round really.

I can see why they're doing it, but a bit surprised after they'd just said that schools weren't shutting. I'm surprised Durham (with no cases apparently) didn't think they could at least finish the term with only one week to go.
I did wonder if it was to give international students an opportunity to get back before borders close.
It's so unsettling for them, although I think dd's quite happy to come back and be cooked for!

As a slightly amusing aside-anyone else getting "antivirus" adverts on the side. If only it was so easy for a person!

Benjispruce · 13/03/2020 18:59

Durham isn’t closing just switching to online lectures for the last week of term.

Benjispruce · 13/03/2020 19:01

@ hanasaunt Glasgow’s website doesn’t say its closing.

Ginfordinner · 13/03/2020 19:05

I had a look at Glasgow's website as well as I know a student who is there. They aren't closing.

Decorhate · 13/03/2020 19:13

Just checked Bristol’s website. They are not closing but starting Easter break early so no lectures or tutorials from Wednesday.

bigTillyMint · 13/03/2020 19:28

@Benjispruce, I reckon that’s what Durham will do
Meanwhile DD is 😡because no online stuff mentioned for Bristol and she can’t get a reply from her diss tutor...

Benjispruce · 13/03/2020 19:35

@BigTillymint what do you think they will do?

Witchend · 13/03/2020 19:40

@Benjispruce yes, sorry, wrong impression there.

Whatagoodidea · 13/03/2020 20:01

Just heard that Aberdeen is closing and that exams will be assessed online. Told DS to check if that's it now for this year before he flies back to us

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2020 20:03

Much smaller uni, obviously, but Lincoln remains fully open. Probably informed by there being only one confirmed case in Lincolnshire.

I do worry how DS would manage in student digs if he had to self isolate, or any student.

Benjispruce · 13/03/2020 20:05

Aberdeen is switching to remote learning not closing according to website.

hanahsaunt · 13/03/2020 22:47

Glasgow hasn't fully closed yet but Law and Social Sciences has and all exams will be online.

SchrodingersKitty · 14/03/2020 12:23

Got DS home safely. He's now grumping around as he's not used to having to communicate with people while also accomplishing complex physical tasks like making coffee!

My over-two-week-long cough (for which I had antibiotics before the virus crisis started) has now segued into a very sore throat, and I had an odd high temperature flash for about an hour when trying to get DS's room packed up. No idea if it is the corona virus, and nothing I would have bothered about before, but I'm trying to follow instructions and self-isolate as much as possible. Its difficult in the house, but I've been round wiping everything I've touched with anti-bacterial wipes, and am not handling food, using different towels, not using small loo, and trying to keep my distance from DH and DS.

My uni has announced that it plans to move to an online teaching mode from next week, so I will be able to teach from home. Despite still being on strike I am getting on with recording some lectures and sorting material ready to upload as soon as the strike is over. This is strictly against local union instructions - they are against us teaching online as they fear the university will steal our materials and make us redundant. Seems a bit crazy to me. At this point I'm more concerned about making sure the students finally get their course content delivered.

justasking111 · 14/03/2020 12:43

Instagram may be a worthwhile place to check re the virus. DS uni. popped up this morning with a link, they have finally put up some info. on their website, they are so busy protecting students (adult) privacy they are in danger of ignoring parents, who will clutter the switch board with worried calls. Much better they put it all out there on line and update as and when it becomes necessary. I do not want to bug them but info. from my DS is pretty much non existent.

bigTillyMint · 14/03/2020 14:07

DS is on his way home. Not value for money this term. And probably not next Angry

justasking111 · 14/03/2020 14:43

Nope perhaps not Tilly, but this is how it is this year. I am missing my ds keenly because of the virus, just want him home now.

HostessTrolley · 14/03/2020 14:50

Daughter (imperial medicine) is coming home. Next weeks mock exams and planned classes are going online, and students have been asked not to attend campus or placement areas. Clinical placements have been cancelled for all year groups, three year groups are due to have practical assessments which are being cancelled or rescheduled. The main ones I feel for are the year six students who are due to take their finals, such a stressful time for them :(

Benjispruce · 14/03/2020 15:28

DD not planning to return before she has to at the moment.

Itscoldouthere · 14/03/2020 15:48

Going to pick DS2 up from UEA on Tuesday, all lectures and lab sessions cancelled and a flat in halls are having to self isolate so I think he’s better off at home.
DS1 still has lectures at Bournemouth Arts, in theory for another 2 weeks, but change at any time.

sergeantmajormum · 14/03/2020 16:14

Liverpool medical school also going online. Not sure if we’ll need to pay accommodation for next term (DD not in uni accom). She’s not keen to return home and lose all her uni independence 🙁

Ginfordinner · 14/03/2020 16:20

I wonder which university will hold out the longest? It looks like Newcastle is up there at the moment.

And why are parents asking if their DC's university is open or closed on the Facebook page? A quick look at the university website will give the answer.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 14/03/2020 17:39

Delurking after a long absence Wink

I'm really hoping as Nott Uni has moved to online from 23rd that Nott Trent will follow suit. It's a long time til their easter break otherwise (3rd april).

There is at least one case in the town near campus, and one of DD's friends is self isolating (in halls on campus) with all the symptoms. The uni are actually providing meals to their room so they're not messing around in that respect. But otherwise it's business as usual, they're still advertising an offer holders day for next saturday.

DH and I have already said that if she needed to self isolate, we would bring her home (even if it meant us having to self isolate too).

Piggywaspushed · 14/03/2020 17:41

Lincoln still going...

avenuekleber · 14/03/2020 18:24

Exeter (Law) modules going online - son on his way home. Cardiff Medical School also suggesting that all but 5th years go home.

avenuekleber · 14/03/2020 18:26

Meant to say that DS's flatmates (various subjects) have all left/are leaving halls this weekend.
