Don't believe the idiot Guardian man. They won't delay a year as would be unworkable, where does the extra year group go in every school ? Everything we hear is rumour, no one knows what the plans are, including OFQUAL who I expect will make a decision start of May. Schools are running on skeleton staff (we were down 30% today due to self isolating or symptoms - teachers are adults with health conditions too). I am knackered covering for collegues who are off and trying to get ready to teach remotely, while still teaching in school. If Boris walked into schools at the moment the virus would be the least of his issues. He would not be leaving with a full working set of body parts.

Hopefulmed · 18/03/2020 16:58

I was talking to a lecturer friend of mine and she was saying universities not keen on deferring exams for a year as they need the finding from undergrads.

mumsneedwine · 18/03/2020 17:05

And they are keen to start. It's going to be a brace decision whatever happens but fingers crossed can still go ahead but with lots of distancing !!

Hopefulmed · 18/03/2020 17:41

May/June exams cancelled. What does that mean for our DC?

Monkey2001 · 18/03/2020 17:43

NO EXAMS????!!!

Can of worms! What is the government thinking? My Y11 DS2 very happy, but waiting to hear how it will work.

OP posts:
Monkey2001 · 18/03/2020 17:44

It may be an issue for medical schools as they do not expect all candidates to get the grades, so their numbers could get messed up. If schools don't give university applicants the grades they need, there will be fights between parents and schools. I can't imagine how it could work.

Using mock results or predictions is completely unfair. He said the qualifications will be decided fairly, this suggests some kind of guess work. Completely ridiculous. If schools are open for key workers open them up for exams! Predicted grades can be over inflated and mocks are usually not great because some kids don't revise for them. This is not good at all.

kingofkings · 18/03/2020 18:05

Wouldn't be happy as ds got B in chem mock but still on track for A acc to school 😔

ladsmum · 18/03/2020 18:27

What a disaster! Completely removes the motivation for continuing to study and prepare esp now schools and colleges are closing. DS2 was due to sit GCSE's this summer too. Mock results were a bit of a mixed bag for both DS1 and DS2 but they're generally excepted to be the "get your finger out" prompt. Feels very poorly thought through.
Life at work is crazy - everything is on hold while we get the Trust ready for COVID19 crisis. Thinking of inventive ways to keep our cancer patients safe but so much uncertainty with an ever dwindling workforce set to dwindle a bit further come Monday.

Fantasiaa · 18/03/2020 18:27

I think they’ll end up sitting the exams at a later date. Perhaps August or September

Powergower · 18/03/2020 18:29

I hope so!

emummy · 18/03/2020 19:13

Waiting to hear verdict on Scottish exams. Ds didn’t revise for her prelims as she had 2 massive science projects due in at the same time. So her results are not good enough. All we can do is wait.

speedyhedgehog · 18/03/2020 20:01

Looks like wales have said definitely no exams. My kids are in the english system but can't see some will be taking exams and others not.

Monkey2001 · 18/03/2020 22:13

They could not get the results out in time for universities if the exams were done in August/September.

Simpler for Scottish students as they have their Highers and a lot of Scottish universities base offers on Highers anyway.

Hopefully it will become clearer over the next few days. My two never took mocks very seriously, so could be bad for DS2. There is talk of giving Y11 predicted grades with an opportunity to "re-sit" in November if they are unhappy with the grades, but that would not work for A levels.

The world is not a place I recognise. Just been shopping and Asda had run out of salt!! (As well as paracetamol, flour, eggs, toilet rolls obviously!)

OP posts:
Fantasiaa · 18/03/2020 22:23

Yes they could get the results out in time.
It is possible to have more teachers marking.

MedSchoolRat · 18/03/2020 22:24

(unless the summer sunshine saves us) I predict that our DC will be doing all distance learning for their first yr of Uni, too. Still no normal classes until autumn 2021 (and then only maybe).

DD is gutted & very stressed about Exams Cancelled. I hope a certain formula is announced quickly.

Fantasiaa · 18/03/2020 22:24

Not every examination takes the same length of time to mark. Alevels are marked in less time than GCSEs. International exams marked even quicker.

It all depends on the number of markers assigned to it.

If all teacher are no longer working due to lockdown/closing of schools... guess what

There will be enough markers.

Exams are cancelled

They are delayed

Fantasiaa · 18/03/2020 22:26

What are you basing this on!?

DD is gutted & very stressed about Exams cancelled

No one has said exams are cancelled

Exams scheduled for May: June are cancelled

Nothing has been said about them being totally cancelled.

Frostyskies1223 · 18/03/2020 22:32

@Fantasiaa , look at the announcement from Welsh Education on the Oxbridge thread, exams won't be held this summer, predicted grades and other methods will be used.

Fantasiaa · 18/03/2020 22:33

@Frostyskies1223
Not what the government has said.
Nobody has said predicted grades or other methods will be used.

Fantasiaa · 18/03/2020 22:36

I’d rather go with what the government is saying.

From a logical thinking perspective, it seems so unlikely they would just cancel exams totally.

  • predicteds are inaccurate
  • too many students would get into oversubscribed courses
  • the validly in their grades would always come into question

Politicians are very subtle with their choice of words at times. The language they choose suggests they will just not happen in May or June.

mumsneedwine · 18/03/2020 22:36

Welsh government has said it will be teacher assessed. If England don't follow there will be a riot !!!

goodbyestranger · 18/03/2020 22:41

It will be teacher assessed incl submitted coursework etc. Makes sense.

Shangrilalala · 18/03/2020 22:47

Definitely cancelled for the summer in Wales:
