Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

on the pork issue I think they could have a separate small plug in fridge for pork perhaps ust like a lot of big houses we viewed when we moved here had two separate kitchens - jewish houses in that case. My vegan son has his own fridge freezer but that is only because we have two and he doesn't have a problem with meat being cooked.

On men into the flat I think it is now a cultural norm in the UK that sex outside marriage and inter sex mixing is okay in the UK so she would need to share with another person who doesn't want men in the flat if she wants that kind of restriction (writing as someone who graduated a teetotal virgin but even then I had no problems what anyone else got up to in the student places).

In big news [not], my son with the building clad since September in covering it has now been removed and light shines in again as of today. Amusingly my office is now the opposite for this week and probably part of next as painters are working directly outside my window here at home so I think to give me privacy and them outside it is best I have drawn my curtains. It seems to make it colder too as usually I get the sun coming in.

(Mumof, I had a quick look but i don't use Instagram so I suspect I wouldn't be a good person to fill in the questionnaire. Good luck with it. Mind you may be that's why I am always happy and healthy - no comparisons with anyone!)

Very tricky with the pork/ male visitors issue. Does she want to impose an alcohol ban in the flat too? That may be hard to enforce! I feel that if someone has strong religious convictions but chooses to share accommodation with others when the cultural norm does not hold those convictions then it is up to the believer to compromise or to choose private accommodation. Different fridge shelves and advanced warning if men were coming to visit would seem fair.

The taking time out of work to pray is an issue I've had to deal with recently at work. A complaint was made about one of my team doing just this. She immediately assumed the complaint was a result of 'cultural misunderstanding'. What I didn't tell her was the complainer was actually a Muslim who also prayed regularly!

Needmoresleep · 24/01/2020 12:18

Haff, yes my Muslim friend said that the timing of the prayer could be flexible, so the midday one could be done in a lunch break. It was not something that her students would dare use to excuse being late for classes, but clearly because non Muslim colleagues were asking her, an excuse used elsewhere.

They have six months rotations, and accomodation is provided, and allocated each time. However if there is a real problem I guess there is no reason why the the Muslim students if they are not able to find solutions, should not ask to swap around so they can live together. Six months is not long enough to build roots in the town, and days can be pretty gruelling, so they do rely on each other for social life and support so will mix in the accommodation. DD is very happy with her flatmates, but next time round it may not be so easy.

And let there be light. Did the burglary shock the landlord into action?

In good news dd got results for exams sat before Christmas and has passed. Huge relief as she was very worried about the exam taken on last day of term and cast a pall over the holidays. No resits required - now crossing fingers for summer work placements!

Xenia · 29/01/2020 12:45

Well done on the results.

Only one of mine has had exams (but they were this month) . His twin said he had done very well but as I don't think the results are out yet how can he know that?

I spoke a bit too soon on the window covering coming off my son's house. Apparently the sticky total covering has come off so the rooms at the front are not totally dark (may be because of pressure from students wanting rent reductions) but the covering over the scaffolding is still one but luckily over my son's section it has a huge rip in it (not done by him) so he gets day light at long last. May be his plants will perk up. My painters finished on day 5 so now I can have my office curtains open again too so lots of light all round.

DD's dissertation project failed the second round of ethics. She is now appealing. If the appeal fails, she will have to start all over again, including discounting the presentation she got a First for. She is understandably a bit stressed about this. Her tutor is optimistic, so we're hoping he's right. On the plus side, she only has one exam this semester, so is revising hard for that.

SMaCM · 29/01/2020 14:18

Xenia - living in the dark must be awful. I love daylight and spend most of my days in a room surrounded by windows.

Carriemac · 29/01/2020 15:37

Light makes such a difference to mood I think! Well done on all the exam results. smaCM that rubbish about your daughters ethics.
DD has been offered a masters place next year so fingers crossed .
And in a happier note I submitted my Phd thesis today so might be looking at a July graduation for myself!! Five years part time whilst working

Horsemad · 29/01/2020 17:56

Ooh Carriemac, that sounds fab; when will you know if you are graduating in July?

Spoke to DS at the weekend, he's still not firmed up plans for where he's spending his birthday...

This ethics thing sounds a right pita *SMaCM, hope it all gets sorted without your DD having to start from scratch again. 🤞

readsalotgirl63 · 29/01/2020 19:28

Yes - will cross fingers for your dd too SMaCM. Glad to hear Xenia and her D's are emerging into the light. I agree seeing daylight makes such a difference at this time of year.

Xenia · 29/01/2020 20:26

Yes, he's really plesaed to have light. I cuold have kept my curtains open the 4.5 days the painter was painting at the back but he would have been right outside and potentially looking in and it just felt simpler to give him and me privacy to close them. it certainly reminded me of how much I like natural light all day. My daughter who has an office with her trainee solicitor reminded me she has no windows in that sense - it is a glass walled office so I remember it being very light but it isn't that close to the atrium or any proper windows with light so I can I can see why it might not be ideal.

Fingers crossed here too for your daughter's ethics submission, SMaCM. How stressful for her and presumably she wants to get it all done so she can start to focus on summer term exams.
Sounds like you're in for exciting times, Carriemac. I hope your graduation dates don't clash, although there seems to be more flexibility these days.
I find light is definitely a factor in well being. I sometimes feel like a mole from November to February with the poor daylight. We are lucky in that we have a conservatory that we use all the year round and I make sure I get outside every day if only for a short while. However, the room I'm currently in would be dismal if I didn't have a light on.
I'm about to make a packing list and write sticky address labels to attach to postcards. Only 2 more sleeps until we go to see DS2. 48 hours from now we'll be on our way to Doha and all being well we will arrive in Adelaide for his teatime on Sunday. Just can't wait to give him the biggest hug!
I'll look forward to catching up with all your news when we get back. Take care, everyone. 🤗

Haffdonga · 30/01/2020 20:35

Lots of good news and exciting times! Have the most amazing time with your ds Latedecember ! Did the fires reach Adelaide at all? I was shocked by a map of the fires in Australia because so much of the news had been focused on Sydney and Melbourne to see that actually there were fires all around the country.

CarrieMac - doing a PhD while working is incredible. You should certainly double marks for that!

Fingers crossed for your dd's ethics SMacM It sounds really stressful for her. I did a psychology degree back in the ancient day and I don't remember ever even discussing ethics. Many random and bizarre experiments were carried out on random members of the public and fellow students without so much as a signature of consent.

DS got accepted on his intercalation Masters course today. He has been quite proactive about how he will fund some of it himself and is today applying for a range of evening and weekend jobs that he intends to do alongside hospital placements, studies, sports and socialising Hmm . Great in theory. I'm not so sure he'll fit it all in when it comes down to it.

Horsemad · 30/01/2020 21:36

Have a wonderful trip @latedecember1963, I bet it will be totally fantastic.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2020 15:31

Should get some sun there anyway!

One of the great things about working part time from home is that I can usually get some daylight. I'm given myself a walking challenge, so far in January I think there have only been four days when I've not been able to get out, without being rained on, I'm a wimp.

bigTillyMint · 31/01/2020 16:06

@ latedecember1963 happy travels - it will be a fantastic trip!

@SMaCM, hope your DD gets through ethics. I’m presuming my DD has as she’s planning to start collecting data soon, but I haven’t asked as she’s trying to focus on not stressing...

@Haffdonga Well done to your DS. DD has just put her application to do a Masters in.

Carriemac · 31/01/2020 17:22

@haffdonga DS got a scholarship for his intercalation, 1k which was secular so make sure your DS explores all options.
Hope the Australia trip goes well latredecember, we go in March after my phd viva to see our DS in Melbourne and I cannot wait !
Can’t believe I will graduate the same year as DD all going well - Mike sis July and she is September in oxford

Haffdonga · 31/01/2020 17:40

@CarrieMac - interesting. Can I ask what your ds's scholarship being 'secular' means? Was it from an external organisation rather than his uni? DS had a couple of positive sounding grant options that have turned out to be dead ends.

Malbecfan · 31/01/2020 20:40

@latedecember1963 safe travels and have a fantastic time.
@SMaCM fingers crossed that it all works out.
@Carriemac wow!

Nothing very interesting from me (as ever). DD1 asked me to proofread her literature review that she has been working on all year. I printed it out and read it whilst I was getting my highlights done - obviously getting my priorities right - and I did find some typos and inconsistencies so we had a nice chat over FaceTime last night. She's applying for summer language courses in Germany so we are hoping to book something and go out to visit her and DH's cousins whilst we still can.

DD2 also asked me to check her funding application for summer cultural exchange courses. She is desperate to go to the Far East and is dithering between Japan and S Korea. I need to find a time to chat to her but she is always out doing something or another. I'm trying to go and see both of them during this half term holiday, but not sure if I can get it to work out.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2020 21:14

Missed a call from DD tonight because of a meeting (the people I work with are in California). According to DH they're having a wake tonight.

Needmoresleep · 31/01/2020 22:09

Ha. We live a short walk from Farage's party, so thought of wandering along, but in the end have decided on an early night. A sudden burst of police sirens though. I wonder what is going on.

A friend's Brexit supporting student son has put up a Union flag in his window to counter their neighbours EU flags. He then asked if he could let off fireworks. My friend replied with a firm no. Her fear, presumably, is that this would give neighbours a MN sanctioned reason to park across her driveway.

Xenia · 01/02/2020 08:44

I remember when we joined and also remember the first referendum when we voted to stay in. I and all our family whatever our political views voted remain but we have left now, and I am sure we can all come together now as one nation and make the best of it.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2020 09:09

Nowt else for it!

Carriemac · 01/02/2020 12:44

Sorry I didn't mean secular !it was from a charity - he did ethics and it was from a medical ethics society . The university listed them somewhere on the masters I do page and I insisted he apply and he got 1k!
