Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

Hi everyone

Goodness me it's quite hot & muggy in my bit of East Devon today. Sod's law that I spent 2.5 hours in online meetings at my desk because the wifi won't work outside. BT are meant to be putting fibre in, but my money is on the day schools break up for the summer. I remember the summer of 76 too. Our lawn went brown but my dad was happy that it killed all the moss.

DD1 had her 3rd exam yesterday. It's meant to be 3 hours so she printed it when it was released at noon, then we had lunch and she worked all afternoon. DH helped her scan it and she uploaded it before dinner. DD2 had her last exam in the morning. People saying about their water going off, last week our internet died completely. I ended up driving to the primary school where I work 2 afternoons each week and sat in the car outside using their excellent wifi. DD2 was most impressed by my resourcefulness.

We collected the rest of DD2's stuff last week. Leicester had a timed session so she had a 2 hour slot where she/we were the only people in her block. We left home at 6.30 to be sure to get the whole 2 hours, but she was done in 90 minutes and managed to vacuum her room too. We drove home without stopping too. DD1's stuff can stay in Cambridge until September - her college is fine about it.

Both DDs' summer plans have been scuppered. When they were at school they used to work in the local ice cream shop so I think they are going to offer their services. Since they live in the same house, they don't need to socially distance from each other at work. The shop is still shut so who knows. Otherwise, I may pay them to sort out the garden (so I don't have to). DD1 has applied to do online tuition but not heard anything yet.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/06/2020 16:01

DD has done a couple of her tuition sessions - in the first one they got through the work she'd thought would take 2 hours within 40 minutes! But I think they both enjoyed it.

She was able to leave kitchen stuff and her bike at her college - she was slightly bemoaning the latter although as I've got one plus my old one we don't really need hers if she wants a ride.

BestIsWest · 02/06/2020 17:02

I had heatstroke in 76. Spent two weeks in a darkened room eating boiled eggs with lots of salt. Missed all my school exams.

We had a really long hot summer around 2003 too.

Xenia · 03/06/2020 16:18

Our own water seems better today although my shower last night was a mere trickle. My daughter just saw a water van going by with lights going and a sign on the side - emergency water or something like that. We have a reservoir under a field at the end of the road so may be it is a problem very close to home but I see other areas on twitter not too far from us with similar issues.

In other news the twin in Bristol got a firs fo rhis essay done last week at home which really surprised him as he did it quickly in the midst of his dissertation (which is still not submitted -I think it is due tomorrow) so he feels very encouraged to do well in his exam which is later this month so that is all good news. His twin is home and totally finished so we are trying to sort out his possessions and perhaps he might shadow his sister informally for a bit who is here and is an in house lawyer/head of legal (she does some fairly "cool" law compared to a lot of mine so I think he might prefer that). He and I are still digging out 4 low diseased box hedge areas - now down to the last of the 4 - I have just been out on my own with the new spade pulling and tugging and cutting it out.

well done twin DS ! a first is so encouraging. hope the dis goes as well. raining here and our water pressure is back to normal - but a bit brown.
I'm handing in my corrected thesis tomorrow so officially only 3 students left in our house...

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2020 20:14

We had some rain this morning and the temperature dropped, as forecast - a nice change and the garden looks a bit happier. Smile

SMaCM · 04/06/2020 09:19

Well done on the thesis Carriemac

bigTillyMint · 06/06/2020 11:15

My DD is looking for advice about not paying Council Tax - she is going to do a Masters, but hasn’t got enrolment proof yet obvs. Her new landlady, who sounds lovely, is worried about how it will work. @Needmoresleep or @Xenia or anyone else?!

Xenia · 06/06/2020 12:33

On council tax if she is sharing a house with a landladyy who may be single and has the single person discount then all that will be needed in due course is proof of the course once she has it. If instead she is sharing a house with other students then they just produce the same thing.

Well done on the thesis submission. One of the twins got his dissertation in on Thursday so that must be a relief which leaves him with one essay/exam before end of term. the other has completed everything and in fact is doing a fair bit of law work stuff actually (from home) so I am encouraged by that. He is the one who starts his law course in September.

what kind of law work stuff Xenia? pre reading for the course?looking for ideas for `dd when she finishes exams

bigTillyMint · 06/06/2020 15:53

She’s not sharing with the landlady - she’s sharing with 4 friends.

Plus she (and 4 others she’s sharing with this year) have just got a bill for the current house (starting July 20, but tenancy ends end of June. I guess they just inform Bristol council that their tenancy will be ended?

Xenia · 06/06/2020 18:42

C, his sister is here for a few weeks and she is working from home and is an in house lawyer so she had been showing him a few things and then today he has with my help done a simple non disclosure agreement for a friend's charity. He had watched some videos on NDAs and been on the Government website - I was quite surprised but pleased. I sent him a link to a law job application I think he should do but that has not happened yet.

BigT, yes just tell the council the tenancy has ended and ideallyin writing and keep a copy. When I got my 25% council tax discount the council took about 2 - 3 months to reply to each letter and each one ignored the one before which I had also sent by special delivery so I was able to refer them to the old letters and enclose copies. They needed the evidence about 3 times over 6 months before they believed me that I live here without a partner and no adult child who is not a student. 3months after I got the discount I then got an investigation letter fora "regular check" of compiance and had to send the whole lots of stuff off to them again outsourced to the Midlands I think it was. The saga will probably start again in the Autumn if both twins remain students.

DD finished her project work on Thursday, and yesterday DH dropped her and the BF off somewhere for a long walk. Hopefully they can both have a bit of downtime and relaxation now before their internships start - the BFs is back in Cambridge and his college isn't accommodating people working there over the summer which is what he'd originally planned so he'll need to find somewhere, but that doesn't start for over a month yet.

Well done CarrieMac! And all the various dissertations etc getting done.

bigTillyMint · 07/06/2020 13:54

Thanks!

We took DD back yesterday - Bristol was very quiet! She is on the march today - hope it all goes peacefully.

willowwispa · 07/06/2020 19:59

So it's nearly the end of the three years - how time has gone quickly.
How are you all?

My DD has finished at Bristol; she emptied the last of her things from the student house this morning and has moved to a new town and started a job to prepare for applying to go back to university in 2021.

Horsemad · 10/06/2020 13:30

@willowwispa, yep it has gone quickly!

DS & flatmates have been offered the option of leaving a month before the lease ends and saving a month's rent, so it looks as if he'll be home at the end of July.

Still no decision on whether he's applying for a Masters...

Xenia · 10/06/2020 13:57

Glad every0one is doing okay. One of mine has been down already with a second legal agreement to discuss with me so at least he seems into that which bodes well for his pGDL course in September. His twin is in Bristol until the end of term and I think has one more essay exam to do.

DD has taken 3 exams 👍.

Just her dissertation and two pieces of coursework to go now. 🤞

hellsbells99 · 10/06/2020 23:09

Your DD is doing well SMaCM Glad things are better.
DD finished her last exam on Friday so enjoyed some socially distanced celebrations in the garden over the weekend which included burning revision notes! This week she is tidying all her bedroom out - drawers, cupboards etc. ready to go and get all her stuff from her uni house. She has decided not to move back to her uni house for the last 3 weeks as too many reports of house parties and police being called.

Xenia · 11/06/2020 09:04

I am pleased the SMaCM daughter is getting work sent in.

Great to hear about the completed exams, dd SMacM. Getting them under her belt must feel like a big hurdle jumped.

And congratulations to all the handers in of theses - especially Carriemac - you should obviously get additional credit for doing it yourself and going through it as a parent at the same time. Hooray to all finishers of final exams!

It really is the proper end of an era for us all whether or not our dcs are carrying on with more studying or facing the big wide world of work. Well done to all of us for sticking with it (and with these threads) since the early days of packing for uni and worrying about what size bed sheets and how many teaspoons they'd need! Star Star Star

Carriemac · 11/06/2020 10:25

thank you - corrections accepted so I can officially after 5 years call myself Dr -can't boast to anyone in real life as it feels irrelevant at the moment so I am so glad I can tell you lot!
DD on number 5 exam (out of 9 today ) what a slog
well doen to those finished it must be fab.

Haffdonga · 11/06/2020 10:57

Surely a MN name change to DrCarriemac would be the highest accolade! Smile

hellsbells99 · 11/06/2020 15:32

Congratulations Dr Carriemac - what a fantastic achievement!

SMaCM · 11/06/2020 16:24

Congratulations DrCarrieMac - you definitely should change your MN name.
