Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

Great news for your DD Errol

readsalotgirl63 · 15/12/2019 19:14

I do love a good cat photo !

Horsemad · 15/12/2019 22:51

That cat is actually smiling! 😆 He's very cute Haff.

Excellent news re DD Errol.

It's lovely having DS home, although I had forgotten just how much milk he drinks...

Eve · 17/12/2019 15:32

Ah - here you all are.

DS survived his works xmas party - some seriously drunk co-workers and heads home on Friday. Hes coming from the opposite end of he country and leaving lunchtime , so suspect he will be home about 9pm as he has Manchester, Birmingham, Oxford to get past!

Horsemad · 17/12/2019 15:44

Glad he got through it Eve! I remember my first works party - well, bits of it! 😆

I expect it'll be pretty manic on the rail network on Fri. DS was delayed last week; fortunately not massively and it's a direct train, so no connections to potentially miss.

bebumba · 21/12/2019 07:46

Yay! Ds came home yesterday. Slightly later than planned as the Eurostar train he was due to catch from Brussels was cancelled due to the French strikes.
He is off to London today to meet up with friends and to see a band at the O2 tonight.

Xenia · 21/12/2019 09:19

My twins are coming back later today from Bristol - a very long term.

I had a letter from Parcelforce yesterday telling me if I want the parcel sent from Australia I had to pay £39.90 for Import VAT and Clearance Fee.
I could have paid an additional fee to have it delivered today but declined. It will come on Monday instead, so still in time for Christmas.
We aren't going to tell DS2 because if it's a mistake on his part he would be mortified as he's always careful to read any small print.
I'm intrigued to know the contents as the birthday parcels he has sent so far to various family members haven't incurred any fees.
Safe travelling for anyone on the move this weekend. I'm going to get on with some menu planning this morning, then I think I will brave the food shop on Monday.

readsalotgirl63 · 21/12/2019 16:15

dd arrived home yesterday very tired and rather despondent as an essay handed in in mid november was only returned yesterday after her exam - and the mark wasn't as good as hoped. This has impacted on how she feels she did in the exam yesterday morning as she based answers in exam on the essay work . Fingers crossed it all comes out in the wash and she has scraped a pass -- essay was 25% of total mark.

However a good nights sleep and a proper feed and she's looking much better - off to town with the boyfriend now. I'm off to wash the kitchen floor - what joy.

A happy, peaceful Christmas to you all.

Xenia · 22/12/2019 16:17

readsalot, hopefully she will cheer up as that's ust one mark so probably won't matter.

One of my sons was reading bits from his latest essay. I am glad he is so into his subject and I love talking to him about it too so that was nice. His twin has driven to a university friend's as she is back from France (she is doing a 4 year degree and this year is in France so only back briefly for Christmas and nice they can all meet up there).

One of mine is having people here for new year I was told yesterday - Last year his twin did the same or at least- had a dinner party and this time whether there is sit down food will depend on numbers. He didn't want to limit numbers of those who stay by how many he could seat . I hope it is not too many.. It will be all boys this time and I think with dinner jackets on too so I hope they take some picture looking very smart, and I have said have a lot of food (I want them to be eating not just drinking).

Law school offer has been accepted today by one of them, Starts on 7 September but is conditional on an upper second which hopefully he'll get.

Mine is due to arrive at Paddington in a couple of hours, then tomorrow we fly to the US to visit her brother. So exciting!

The algorithm for the cheap airline tickets forced us to buy a piece of luggage per seat, ie we wanted 2 cases but the choice was none or three. So we have a whole present suitcase which we can leave behind. Biscuits (custard creams are a favourite) marmite, hot chocolate, custard powder. It’s all there.

The only problem is a long crowded flight. The airline are already looking for volunteers to cancel. We will arrive early.

Xenia · 22/12/2019 16:59

Sounds exciting. I have watched a lot of those youtube videos of customs officers and import of food id always an issue - make sure there are no sausages in there. I am never happy bringing white powders in, even custard powder is always risk free. When we used to go to Wengn to sky for Christmas I always took one case which had the hiddne present for the older 3 children when very small as they thought Father Christmas delivered them out there.

The one of my twins who is here today has bee ordering his Christmas prsents for siblings - he just showed me - good choices and very nice to do it about now. I never like to think much about Christmas until my mid December birthday is over so he and I are on the same page on that. I took him to the supermarket earlier and am going to drop him at a school friend's near by shortly (his twn has their car today) - that friend was round last night and they apparently had a really good game of Cluedo. I had gone to bed by then.

Good plan of Need to visit son in USA. When my daughter had her gap year in Whistler we all flew out to a hotel there and loved it.

Have a safe & enjoyable trip to see your DS @Needmoresleep. 🙂

Xenia, your DS made me smile, ordering presents on 22/12!

My DS has gone out with friends tonight. There is a girl in the group who he is keen on, so maybe there's some Xmas romance in the air? 🙂

halocompanach · 22/12/2019 18:35

I remember your twins starting at the same time as mine Xenia, are you sure it was 2016?

2017 year 1
2018 year 2
2019 year 3 - graduate 2020 ?

My DC has pulled out of the 4th year of her degree as it doesn't cover the right material for what she wants to do, she's got to work for a year to get experience and then do her doctorate.

Xenia · 23/12/2019 08:24

Mine started in the academic year 2017/18 I think although after 5 children may be I am losing track.... so year 2 was 18/19 and year 3 is 2019/20. I had 2 attempts are continuing the older thread due to my getting the dates wrong so I am not going to put any money on if I have it right now and anyone is welcome on the thread!

My twins definitely graduate after 3 year degrees in 2020. In fact I put their possible graduation week on the kitchen calendar and my new 2020 desk diary - yes I am still old school enough to have paper stuff........ so they can try to keep it free of next summer's holidays.

One of mine was away last night at a friend's and the other this mkorning is still sleeping but he seems fine and went to bed a bit late. I think he is enjoying the quiet house where last night was only he and I here. I am working today and tomorrow (at home) but he is quite self contained and other than needing the occasional lift will be fine. He met a school friend who lives near us at Starbucks (until it shut) yesterday which was nice. I keep asking them all what their friends are doing (career-wise) after graduation which is quite interesting at times although some have no idea yet and some will be on 4 year or longer degrees.

halo, good luck to your child. One of mine is not sure yet what to do next year, possibly a gap year but he is still deciding. He had talked about doing law in the summer like his twin will be (and indeed their sisters did) but I am certainly not forcing anyone into law even though I love it.

@Needmoresleep, hope you don't get bumped off, and happy holiday!

@Xenia, what is the date please? Or do different faculties have different dates?

So far (a week for DD and more for DS) no family moaning/arguments... must be due a meltdown soon! Mind you, they have been out a LOT!

Horsemad · 23/12/2019 08:47

Lol @bTM, mine are getting on quite well too, it's a Christmas miracle!! 😮

Xenia · 23/12/2019 08:48

I looked it up because we usually go away in June with the whole family immediately Bristol term ends (although in 2012 my oldest grandchild will be in Big School so we will be back to working around school dates by then....)

Bristol website says:

"July 2020 dates

Graduation ceremonies in July 2020 will be held from Thursday 16 to Friday 24 July. There will not be any ceremonies on a weekend day. A full schedule of ceremonies will be available closer to the date. "

So I blocked all those days off just in case. My older daughter was working abroad that summer when she graduated from Bristol and we went to her graduation in Feb after she left so it is certainly not the end of the world if you cannot go in July. I think it's nicer to do it in the summer though if possible. Mind you lots of people don't even want to attend so is entirely up to the person and their family. I think it's a bit unfair to deprive parents of going given most parents have spent a lot of time getting you there, reading to you as a child, helping with home work etc.

Meant to give the linke of my quote above www.bristol.ac.uk/graduation/dates/ .,.,.anything to distract myself from the work I am supposedly doing...

@Horsemad, mine get on great (FT each other most days) - it's more them and us Grin

@Xenia, thanks - Crikey, right at the end of my term when we might have been off on hol. Good job I asked!

halocompanach · 23/12/2019 12:30

That's a shame Bristol don't do any weekend dates, it's still school term time for most of them so the younger ones will be doing GCSE mocks potentially.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/12/2019 12:41

DD is on the train. I'd better get the box of presents - none wrapped yet - out of her room!

Xenia · 23/12/2019 12:50

(on graduations..,,, although private schools break up about 8 Jul so 16 July graduations well into the summer holidays.... and I think in Scotland for all schools)

DS is home after his 24 hour coach journey back from his ski trip and I've put my out of office on reply at work. Christmas can officially start now!

Enjoy having your lovely people home.

halocompanach · 23/12/2019 16:27

That's fine for private schools but my others are at state school - we don't have any private schools in our town.
