Anyone studied Macbeth?

Can anyone say what points I should be focusing on in this question:

Discuss what we know about Macbeth’s character, particularly with reference to the closing scenes of the play.

Many thanks.

@BlouseAndSkirt

“ it is clear that with his head on a pike”

I think Macbeth might have the honour of being the only person ever to have their head placed on a pike.

@YourOpinionIsNoted How I wish I'd had teachers with your masterful ability to summarise the key points of the character.

OP, also worth noting that it's a rare example not of iambic pentameters, but of doric hexameters. And noted for its use of broad scots.

TipseyTorvey · 30/11/2019 17:43

I only remember one soliloquy which I recite everytime I get one of the big kitchen knives out. I hold it aloft and intone 'is this a dagger which I see before me etc'. No help whatsoever...

Do let us know how you get on with your essay, OP.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/11/2019 18:42

But don't forget the plagiarism software employed now. I'd love for it to identify MN as a source.

ScreamingValenta · 30/11/2019 18:49

Don’t forget the importance of the egg references, eg “young fry of MacDuff” and “what, all my pretty chicks”

Big Eggo, who appeared on the cover of the first ever 'Beano' comic, was in fact a satirical parody of Lady Macbeth. As an ostrich he symbolises her guilty desire to bury her head in the sand.

BarbaraStrozzi · 30/11/2019 18:52

The egg theme is of course intimately related to the question of Bacon and provenance (I favour Danish myself).

AgeLikeWine · 30/11/2019 18:58

Be sure to include references to the bit where Macbeth returns to Scotland as a conquering hero after scoring the winning goal against England at Wembley in 1967. It was England’s first defeat since they won the World Cup the previous year.

He’s Dead.

You can spend the rest of the exam sharpening your pencils.

And of course, it explains why they have square sausages in Scotland.

SuperSimpleSnogs · 30/11/2019 19:10

Hmm surely google would be a better starting point than Mumsnet?

ErrolTheDragon · 30/11/2019 19:14

Ooh, that's a good idea.
I tried googling the OPs question, and got precisely one hit

YourOpinionIsNoted · 30/11/2019 19:17

The question is shit. I wouldn't set that for anything above a year 8 class. It leads the response to write about the character as though they are real, as opposed to writing a critical analysis of the text.

There's no way it's from HE.

LolaSmiles · 30/11/2019 19:30

Want a bet? I've met some trainee teachers who have worse subject knowledge than a typical year 9 student.
If you've ever had to explain the difference between a simile and a metaphor to a 22 year old English Literature graduate then you'd not be surprised how low the bar is at some university courses.

Shock
LolaSmiles · 30/11/2019 19:45

I wish I was joking.
they were from crap low ranking universities who take anyone but it's not the done thing on MN to say some universities are crap

Not all universities are equal. Sitting in lesson observations watching 14/15 year olds shred someone's subject knowledge is incredibly awkward.

His clothes hang off him. Fair to speculate all the blood and guts have turned him vegan.

MillicentMartha · 30/11/2019 21:29

Now you’re getting it mixed up with Hamlet! (The mild cigar, from Benson and Hedges.)

Rhubarbisevil · 30/11/2019 21:44

Lady M clearly was not familiar with Cillit Bang - “out damned spot, what, will this ne’er be clean?”

Barry Scott was clearly batting for Banquo’s team.

And the genesis if the Egg McBeth McMuffin.

Rhubarbisevil · 01/12/2019 10:59

Don’t mention Denmark!!! Now we have to talk about Hamlet and wonder why Shakespeare wrote such an existential play about a self-obsessed cigar.

BarbaraStrozzi · 01/12/2019 11:03

Ah, at last, someone's made the link to Omelette, Prince of Danepak.

Alrighteo · 01/12/2019 11:08

I'd start by reading the play, then re-reading the closing scenes of the play. What do you know about his character? Nice man? Bad man? Noble? Brave? Cowardly? Devious? Loyal? Egotistical?

ScreamingValenta · 01/12/2019 11:24

Don’t mention Denmark!!!

I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it. Wink
