I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

Postcode NR4 7TJ got us to the right place.

CointreauVersial · 21/09/2019 15:57

No, we're in Courtyard A in the University Village. Kitchen is the only communal space, but it's a great size for six people. Just as well, because you couldn't swing a cat in the bedroom. Compact!

MrsBartlet · 21/09/2019 16:25

@icanbewhatiwant Ds is in en-suite campus and has a bin and a desk lamp. He took another desk lamp which he using as a bedside lamp. His kitchen was a reasonable size for the 10 of them. Not much preparation space or cooking space if more than 2 of them were trying to cook at the same time but a good size table for them all to gather around with a nice view across to the Sainsbury's Centre. Also plenty of fridge and freezer space and individual kitchen lockers to store other food.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/09/2019 16:43

@CointreauVersial thanks for postcode.

Did they also get freshers wristbands etc at the same time??

Have filled car and roof rack. Think we may be bringing some things back with us Grin I will have a bag at my feed and DD was nearly having to sit on the mattress protector!!!

DD impatient to get going and still a bit Hmm at the reality of it

Her American flatmate has been there a few days and says not much storage in kitchen but I think she may be used to american accommodation sizes?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/09/2019 16:46

@MrsBartlet what accommodation is your DS in??

Sounds like a brilliant drop off- now you have earned Gin or Cake

CointreauVersial · 21/09/2019 16:59

@mumsiedarlingrevolta - no fresher's wristbands - I think they have to collect them from somewhere else (she got an email). But they do get their campus card and lanyard, which gets them into their flat and presumably other places.

Anyway, DD1 has hit the first crisis (and it's a biggie) - can't get WiFi to work. That's it, I'm coming home...! Grin

MrsBartlet · 21/09/2019 16:59

@mumsiedarlingrevolta He is in Constable Terrace.

We have had a message from him on the family WhatsApp saying they have all been out for a wander round campus this afternoon Smile He is planning to be up early tomorrow to get to the sports centre and sort out his membership. I am the least sporty person in the world - if I hadn't been there when he was born I would never believe he was mine Grin

MrsBartlet · 21/09/2019 17:01

@CointreauVersial Ha! It took ds a while to sort that out and he is normally very good at all things IT!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/09/2019 17:05

oh no @CointreauVersial I'm going to keep that to myself or DD will start unpacking!

Currently have very anxious DDog clinging to my lap-think she knows...

Am so grateful for all the wisdom and support on this thread- I will be having a glass of rose shortly and will raise a glass to all the Dfreshers!!

CointreauVersial · 21/09/2019 17:17

@MrsBartlet - so how DO you sort out the WiFi??

MrsBartlet · 21/09/2019 17:20

@CointreauVersial No idea. Let me ask and see if he replies to my message Grin I think a group of them sat in the kitchen and worked it out together as they were all having problems.

CointreauVersial · 21/09/2019 17:20

Also, her room has an ethernet point, so we took a cable.... but her laptop doesn't have an ethernet port. She had to choose between bringing a big, heavy laptop and a smaller, lighter one, and chose the latter. So unless she can get the WiFi to work she's stuffed.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/09/2019 17:22

My son said earlier that he has an Ethernet cable but not the adapter to fix it into his laptop. Doh...now he tells me.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/09/2019 17:23

So after asking DD about all these emails DC are getting she has had a eureka moment-she was using her school email which has now been shut down so she isn't getting them and only realised just now Confused she hasn't had the gp one or the one about freshers wristbands- has she missed anything else??????
Small panic happening...

juicy0 · 21/09/2019 17:23

@MrsBartlet @CointreauVersial I'm pleased everything went well for you, our day went pretty smoothly too. There was a lovely vibe around the main square and the campus looked lovely in the glorious sunshine. Everyone was super helpful and seemed really happy to be there.

DD is in Barton and once we had collected keys, which only took a couple of minutes, we headed to the car. We were met by some lovely students with a big trolley/cage who helped us move everything to DD's room at once, no need for multiple trips back and forth to the car which was brilliant. We then collected her freshers wristband from the Hive in the SU building, again very organised and trouble free. There is a huge brutish heart foundation stall in the same building until Wednesday selling crockery, cutlery, saucepans and anything in between so if you do forget something pop along there and pick up a bargain.

Her room was clean and there was plenty of storage space for all her stuff. No desk lamp in her room but a desk light under the bookshelves. There is a recycling bin under the desk but we added another to that for general waste. We packed an extension lead but it's come home with me as there were two double sockets on the desk and one double above the bed. The wardrobe had a full length hanging rail with a shelf over and another storage space at the bottom. You do need to take hangers as none were provided. Also there is no shaver point in the en-suite in case anyone needs one of those.

The kitchen storage is ok; a fridge shelf and freezer drawer each but the cupboard space is very limited so only take what they will need. I don't know where they are going to prep their food, the worksurface is covered in 12 bottles of fairy liquid, 3 kettles, 4 toasters a steamer and a George Foreman grill 😂

It was really difficult to say goodbye but she seems happy and excited to meet everyone and get started so I can't ask for more than that.

Good luck to everyone for tomorrow.

@CointreauVersial It seems I have misunderstood. He got on the WiFi on his phone but more by fluke and couldn't tell you how he did it 🙄 He still hasn't managed to sort it on his laptop or pc.

MrsBartlet · 21/09/2019 17:29

@juicy0 It is very hard saying goodbye isn't it? As long as they are happy and excited to be there it will be fine. I am going to miss ds loads but I can see how ready for this he is.

CointreauVersial · 21/09/2019 17:30

One last thing - regular UK size sheets fit on the beds - no need for the longer EU ones.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/09/2019 17:37

@juicy0 thanks so much-that is so helpful-

DD in Hickling so I assume similar set up.

I think we will be bringing a lot back with us!! DD has a nut allergy so a little anxious about sharing cooking things and cutlery etc but Hopefully we can cram it all in!

DD's flat have chatted about who is bringing toasters etc so hope to avoid too much duplication

juicy0 · 21/09/2019 17:53

@MrsBartlet the WiFi setup is complicated! In the end we googled and found this step by step guide for each different device.

portal.uea.ac.uk/itservices/connect/wi-fi

Basically you have to sign into eduroam, log in and then connect to the uea WiFi

MrsBartlet · 21/09/2019 17:55

Thanks @juicy0! I will forward the link to ds.

sluj · 21/09/2019 18:48

What a lovely day to go to UEA !

The drop off was easy with so many people on hand to help. All the freshers got a little green box in the LCR with drinks, noodles, etc in it.The IS stand was giving out sunglasses, sturdy plastic pint glasses and bottle openers too
The flat mates in Norfolk Terrace welcomed DS as soon as they saw him and they all went off inspecting each others rooms. DS's room looked like a bomb site when we left it as he was keen to go and join the room tours.
We also had a nice lunch with DS1 who is in year 4 and went back to UEA earlier last week.
All in all, a great day and I am looking forward to my prosecco later.Smile

icanbewhatiwant · 21/09/2019 18:49

There's a girl in ds's flat already. She couldn't get there tomorrow so gone in a day early. She's chatting to them all but not sending photos. Be nice to get an idea on space.

Itscoldouthere · 21/09/2019 19:32

DH back from dropping DS, en-suite campus rooms are small, and the kitchen is small for 8, but it is fine.
One problem is no storage in the bathroom whatsoever, so he’s going to have to get some kind of freestanding unit to put his bathroom stuff in.
It’s certainly isn’t anywhere as nice as DS1 accommodation at Bournemouth, but at least it’s quite a bit cheaper.
It looks a bit like a small travelodge room 😂

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/09/2019 19:43

@Itscoldoutthere after watching the online room tour a few times we got an over the shower shelf thing for in the shower.

DS2 also had a fantastic over the bathroom door storage thing.

Maybe just a storage box on the floor under sink?
