I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

@juicy0 12 hrs after your post, that is such a kind offer.

DS2 across the.............gap between the buildings (not sure if it counts as a courtyard or not :) ) in Hickling

boys3 · 18/09/2019 18:40

another Sunday arrival here, we are about 2.5hrs away. Wondering how busy it will be as the plan here was also to aim for 10:00 - 10:30 arrival.

The bigger downside (not really a big one) is that I don't think there will be room in the car for DS3. When DS1 first went to Uni we had a people carrier and having his two DBs as willing bag carriers (up and down to a top floor room) was much appreciated

icanbewhatiwant · 19/09/2019 08:36

Thanks for list @juicy0 just had a look and compared it to mine. I'm not sure how much room there will be. I know there are only 2 fridge/freezers and there are at least 10 of them. (Another reason ds put down Hickling/Barton as there were more fridges and storage) I saw there is a small locker each for food. So I've bought 2 under bed storage baskets DH says they won't fit under a bed. They are only small but he says sides too tall. I hope they fit. Ds can keep food in one, pots and pans in the other. I have another storage box, a canvas one I'm hoping will go in the bottom of the wardrobe for stuff like spare sheets.
Ds is working again today, he has told them he won't be in tomorrow. So as I'm working tomorrow he has a list I've written of things to do...packing, checking everything I have bought and writing a list of anything I've forgotten, plus write a food list. I've also written things down like sign in with gp, sign into the accommodation place and say who is paying and to check all emails and do anything he hasn't done. I can almost guarantee it won't be done when I get him from work. I do wonder how he will get on on his own as he always seems to not care. Hopefully he will prove me wrong and be fine.

Hi
I have been following this thread and think it's great. DS 2 is hoping for uni in 2020 ( current year 13) and we went to UEA for an Open Day in May. DH and' I thought it was fab, DS not so enthusiastic ( but that's his approach to everything at the moment). DH thought the ziggrats had been designed by Barney Lumsden's dad during his 'experimental substances' faze (any W1A fans still out there? ). We really hope he chooses UAE on his UCAS.
If thread is still going do post how your DC's are getting on later in the term- hoping our boy joins them next academic year x

NotSorry · 19/09/2019 08:56

@icanbewhatiwant

We did the GP last night - I just googled UEA GP and the online application was on there

You will need nhs number, immunisation dates (however you can say don’t know if you don’t know) his weight and height - everything else I filled in and he just had to do an electronic signature, it was quite easy

NotSorry · 19/09/2019 08:58

@PBLR

The not so enthusiastic DSs are their default position when they are teenagers. My eldest DS went to a different 6th form to his school and he recently told his younger DS that he loved it there - never heard him say that at the time - he is 22 now, so they do grow out of it Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/09/2019 09:20

@PBLR I think it's only after other university visits that UEA can be reviewed in all its glory. I think it is the 'whole package' that UEA gets so right. Hope your DS sees the light. As I've said previously, I have never heard so much as a negative comment about the university which is surely a good sign!

Not sure DS put his NHS number on his GP form - he certainly didn't ask for it. Possibly just as well because they were all last seen tucked away in a Filofax that I've not clapped eyes on for about ten years or so! Or would it be in his red medical records book?

GoldenRuby · 19/09/2019 09:27

DS didn't put his NHS number or his weight on the GP sign up form either but it let him submit it. Hope it goes through ok.

juicy0 · 19/09/2019 09:27

@icanbewhatiwant I'm also worried about the amount of storage space. I've just had a bother look at the you tube video and the space under the bed looks good for boxes but I can't find any dimensions so I will wait and measure on Saturday when we get there. There does look to be some space at the end of the bed and on top of the wardrobe too.
Apparently there is a fridge shelf and freezer drawer per person in DC's flat according to the end student who has already moved in.

Hi both replies
Agree totally with both comments - 17/18 yr olds are like this
UEA v others - even he was no where near as impressed with out local RG. Here's hoping ! Xx

icanbewhatiwant · 19/09/2019 09:33

@juicy0 yours is in Hickling/Barton though isn't she? I noticed a line of several fridge/freezers in there. But only 2 in en suite campus. So it'll be half a shelf each if that.

Yes it looked like a decent space under the bed. I'm going to leave a case there for when he comes home by train. Hopefully that will go on top of the wardrobe. It would be nice to be given a bit more detail on the space, maybe from previous students.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/09/2019 09:39

I just laughed to myself...I went round looking for a knife yesterday for ds to cut fruit, veg, bread etc. In our local shops they either had massive great knives of knife blocks. Anyway...ordered a small one from amazon. I just had an email saying it'll be delivered today and that the driver must see photographic evidence that I'm over 18. I thought to myself that he can just look at my face, I certainly look well over 18!! Obviously I know they have been told to check. But it made me smile.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/09/2019 10:19

@icanbewhatiwant it is laughable in one way but sadly required for retailers to be so vigilent too. I have had to put DS's new kitchen knife in a box buried within a load of bedding. I was going to offload all the unused IKEA ones we have in the kitchen drawer but thought that one is enough to be having to carry on public transport even though it is clearly part of a 'house move'!

@GoldenRuby, surely the NHS number is only the ultimate ID, potentially only necessary if there are two people in the same surgery with the same name, DOB?

I did know someone once who had the same married name as her DH's sister - and with the same DOB. And neither first nor surname at all commonly found. I don't think they were at the same GP surgery fortunately though.

GoldenRuby · 19/09/2019 11:14

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I'm sure they will flag if they can't identify him. I am pretty confident that he doesn't have a frequently occurring name, and certainly not at his current surgery (details had to be provided) moving to the campus surgery at the same time!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/09/2019 12:56

@GoldenRuby agree re the NHS number. DS just ticked that he'd had the meningitis and MMR vaccines but didn't wait for me to give him the exact dates. Again I'm sure that info will be in his medical records held by our current GP surgery though.

NotSorry · 19/09/2019 13:15

the NHS number was if you knew it - also the vaccines you could tick - yes I've had it but can't remember date

icanbewhatiwant · 19/09/2019 13:41

I phoned the nurse at our health centre and they had no records of school vaccinations. I did get a contact number from the school of the local health authority. I spoke to someone there instead. My friend had kept all info from the school about her son's vaccinations...I wish I was that efficient. It didn't occur to me to take note of what he'd had!

CointreauVersial · 19/09/2019 13:42

Have done the GP thing - I didn't know the NHS Number, but then found the card five minutes after we submitted it.

She also discovered that she now has a timetable! She has set up her UEA email on Outlook, and found that all her Week 1 / Introductory sessions had dropped into her calendar, but none of the lectures etc for the weeks after that. Makes it a little more real, though.

Does anyone know if there is a Reading Week / half term? There seems to be a slight break in proceedings at the end of October, but it isn't a whole week. Just trying to sort out when she might next come home.

I'm also slightly worried that pretty much everyone on here (us included) is aiming to arrive as early as possible (10am) on Saturday. It will be a bit of a bun-fight if that happens!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/09/2019 13:48

We won't be arriving until midday, just when everyone else is heading off to lunch! It's quite interesting that some universities are so regimented in their slots and other would seem to encourage a free-for-all. Maybe UEA know that the spread of arrivals tends to be across the day.

I always think of MNetters as being Alpha females, so by that token one would expect everyone on here to be arriving with plenty of time to spare! Goes with the territory! Wink

Itscoldouthere · 19/09/2019 15:20

I think DH and DS will arrive around midday on Saturday, enough time to unload, go shopping for fresh food, have lunch and help DS sort out things a bit then get back home at a decent time.

GoldenRuby · 19/09/2019 17:46

DS has just had confirmation that he has been moved onto the books of the campus GP centre, and has been given a named GP. All very efficient!

icanbewhatiwant · 19/09/2019 19:24

Ok...ds has informed me that at the neon party they need to dress in white and they have paint thrown all over them. Anyone else heard this? Sounds a bit bonkers to me. So he's now finding old clothes and old shoes.

juicy0 · 19/09/2019 20:02

@icanbewhatiwant yes DD says she needs to wear something white that will basically get ruined 🙄

OP posts:
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/09/2019 20:38

That sounds great fun but not one DS will be doing (unless he has a change of heart).

icanbewhatiwant · 19/09/2019 21:35

Ds wanted to buy a new white t shirt. I said no. He has found an old white one with stripes. His work jeans were about to be binned, so he can take those. He's got some old paint splattered trainers too. So that's more stuff he now needs to pack.
