I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

@icanbewhatiwant yes we've had a few raised eyebrows about DD's decision to remain close to home but it was purely based on the Geography course offering more modules suited to her interests than Nottingham or Birmingham which were her other shortlisted unis.
The way she's sees it is that she is moving out and will experience uni in the same way as anyone else, she just doesn't have a long or expensive commute when she does want to visit home. It also means she can keep her part time job all year round which is great as she enjoys it and it pays well.
I suspect she will also live out for her 2/3 years too but if she wants to live at home and reduce her debt then the option is there.
We have said that she's welcome to come home as often as she likes but that we won't visit her unless she asks and she seems happy with that.

@NotSorry I'm pleased that the thread has been so supportive, it's given us all an outlet to raise queries and vent our frustrations with our DC without judgement. I have never been a regular on Mumsnet until now but I'm so glad I engaged on the threads that led to this one being set up.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 thank you for the original thread! Even though I was late to the party I have benefited hugely by being a part of your conversation.

DD found the finance info for accommodation on evision and nominated us as responsible for payment as we agreed. I then received an email giving me a log in to evision which then offered four different payment options to sign up to. All done and now awaiting a bill but nothing due as yet, I think we have 28 days from the licence date so I expect I will get an invoice on Monday.

@juicy0 thanks for setting up this thread. It is interesting that this is the only 'freshers 2019 university specific one going. I'd like to hope it says much (all positive) about the university, students and we parents.

I think it was @Decorhate so she deserves the credit really.

I wonder if any of our DC will become friends unbeknown to us? With some doing the same subjects, it's entirely possible.

juicy0 · 18/09/2019 14:06

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes I wondered if any of our DC would unknowingly be I. The same halls or become friends. How would we ever know?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/09/2019 14:11

Well DS just rolls his eyes if I mention MN so he's not going to be spreading word around for sure!

icanbewhatiwant · 18/09/2019 14:49

Is anyone else's dc doing biology? I'm sure I've asked but can't remember. There's no one else on this thread in Paston house I remember that much.
Yes my son rolls his eyes at any mention of Mumsnet. But there are things we've found out on here that we would never have known. Also I have been using the list someone posted about what to buy. I think it may have @juicy0?

juicy0 · 18/09/2019 15:15

@icanbewhatiwant I did post a couple of lists, one for halls stuff and the other a list of larded staples. I'm glad it's been useful! We're going to buy the last few bits tomorrow and then the lists are complete and it feels good!

OP posts:
juicy0 · 18/09/2019 15:16

*larder staples!

OP posts:
NotSorry · 18/09/2019 15:48

@icanbewhatiwant

My son is in Paston house - he's doing economics

NotSorry · 18/09/2019 15:57

DS said he had a house meeting scheduled but now can't remember where he saw it Hmm can anyone shed any light?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/09/2019 16:00

I think there was something in the most recent accommodation email (from last week) about house meetings... @NotSorry

On a related note was the prompt to register with the campus medical centre sent as a separate email or in with the general UEA 'you need to do...' one sent yesterday?

icanbewhatiwant · 18/09/2019 16:23

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 my son forwarded me the need to do email. No mention of gp on that email.

@juicy0 we copied out your list of stuff needed for accommodation thanks. I added a few things and removed girly items. Not seen a larder staples list though.

@NotSorry ah yes I remember you saying now that your ds was Paston house too. I've heard nothing about an accommodation meeting. Ds seems to forward me some emails and not others.

As I said earlier I'm hoping when he finishes his summer job he will start to do anything he hasn't done yet.

Online shop booked for home sat morn. Ds can add anything that he needs to that. I think most other things are sorted. Anything we've forgotten he will have to get himself. Or there's always amazon.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/09/2019 16:42

Is it this, or is there something less formal too?

"I am writing to inform and invite you to attend a mandatory accommodation induction - you will find the details below. This induction should take no more than 45 minutes and will be an opportunity to meet your Parish Student Services Resident (SSR) and the wider locality team.

This induction will inform you of what an SSR is and what support the Residential Life Team can offer you. This is in addition to general information regarding good order, security and communal living. As already stated attendance at this event is mandatory and will form a precursor to your individual kitchen meetings to be arranged by your Parish SSR. By attending this event it will mean that your kitchen meetings will be a shorter and more informal affair.

The details for the accommodation induction are as follows:

Date: 23 September 2019
Time: 7pm
Location: Lecture Theatre 1"

My DS is doing Biology 👋

Just going through the pain of trying to get him to buy some new clothes 🤯

icanbewhatiwant · 18/09/2019 16:46

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 i haven't seen that email. I'll sit down with ds and get him to check what meetings he has etc. He will need to write them down.

@Itscoldouthere biology too. Ours might meet them. Mind you...I bet there are a lot of them.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/09/2019 16:48

I would imagine that if there's anything specific to their block, there would be info about such a meeting in their flats when they arrive?

GP registration just done.

Missyelliottsaysso · 18/09/2019 17:31

I am very grateful for this thread, I don’t post a lot but am reading it every day for support.
Is anyone else’s DC moving in on Sunday...just checked the weather...thunderstorms are due. Hope that’s not an omen!

icanbewhatiwant · 18/09/2019 17:33

Hello @Missyelliottsaysso yes we are Sunday. My ds says everyone in his flat is arriving at 10am and he doesn't want to be last. Good job we aren't far away.

Decorhate · 18/09/2019 17:34

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I think you have done the lion’s share of the work keeping the other threads going! Ds is going to a far less popular uni than UEA - which doesn’t do his subject unfortunately

NotSorry · 18/09/2019 17:35

yes my DS is moving in on Sunday

I need to get this off my chest - DS IS GETTING ON MY BLOODY NERVES!!!

I'm working, trying to sort his stuff out, do my voluntary work, plan a massive work event, organise my other children, sort the house out and he is wafting around saying things like 'what will I do for salt and pepper at uni' the kid can drive and is capable of going to the shop

I will miss him when he's gone Grin

that feels better

juicy0 · 18/09/2019 18:11

Here is the list or cupboard staples I compiled from a mixture of the Nosh cookbook and other websites/articles. Just the fresh fruit veg and dairy to pick up on Saturday to add to it.

Itscoldouthere · 18/09/2019 18:11

@Notsorry sounds like you needed to get that off your chest, don’t worry this is a safe space 😂
I get what you mean having 2 of them going it seems to have been so drawn out, DS2 is going on Saturday.
I managed to get him to buy a couple of pairs of trousers and some sweatshirts, mainly from the sale rail at H&M who also give a student 20% discount if you spend over £35, so I was pleased, it’s been a very expensive month!

MrsBartlet · 18/09/2019 18:15

@NotSorry Grin- you will miss him when he is gone!

Norwich was lovely today and made me feel excited for ds. We live in a small village and our nearest town (well it is allegedly a city!) is smaller than Norwich so I think he will enjoy the buzz. I went to York and Norwich has a similar vibe to York.
